1680 - Pueblo Indians drove the Spanish out and took possession of present-day Santa Fe, New Mexico.

1831 - Nat Turner launched a short-lived, violent slave rebellion in Virginia.

1858 - The first of seven debates between U.S. Senate candidates Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas took place in Ottawa, Illinois.

1878 - The American Bar Association was founded in Saratoga, New York.

1904 - Jazz musician and bandleader William "Count" Basie was born in Red Bank, New Jersey.

1911 - The Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre museum in France by an Italian waiter, Vicenzo Perruggia. (The painting was recovered two years later.)

1940 - Exiled Russian Communist revolutionary Leon Trotsky died in Mexico City from wounds inflicted by an assassin.

1945 - President Harry S. Truman announced the end of the Lend-Lease Program.

1959 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed an executive order proclaiming Hawaii the 50th state of the Union.

1961 - Country singer Patsy Cline recorded the Willie Nelson song "Crazy" in Nashville for Decca Records.

1983 - Philippine opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr. ended a self-imposed exile in the Untied States; he was shot dead moments after stepping off a plane at Manila International Airport.

1987 - Sgt. Clayton Lonetree, the first Marine ever court-martialed for spying, was convicted in Quantico, Virginia of passing secrets to the KGB.

1991 - A hard-line coup against Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev collapsed in the face of a popular uprising led by Russian federation President Boris Yeltsin.

1991 - Latvia declared its independence from the Soviet Union.

1992 - An 11-day siege began at the cabin of white separatist Randy Weaver in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, as government agents tried to arrest him for failing to appear in court on charges of selling two illegal sawed-off shotguns.

2002 - A jury in San Diego convicted David Westerfield of kidnapping and murdering 7-year-old Danielle van Dam. (He was later sentenced to death.)

2006 - British prosecutors announced that 11 people had been charged in a plot to blow up trans-Atlantic jetliners bound for the United States.

2009 - Leaders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America voted to lift a ban that prohibited sexually active gays and lesbians from serving as ministers.

1901 - Joe McGinnity is suspended from the National League for punching and spitting on an umpire.

1922 - Curly Lambeau and the Green Bay Football Club were granted an NFL franchise.

1929 - The Chicago Cardinals traveled out of town for training camp. They were the first professional football team to do this.

1931 - Babe Ruth hits his 600th career home run.

1949 - The New York Giants defeat the Philadelphia Phillies via forfeit after fans continually threw debris onto the field.

1971 - Laura Baugh, at the age of 16, won the United State's Women's Amateur Golf tournament. She was the youngest winner in the history of the tournament.

1982 - Milwaukee Brewers' reliever Rollie Fingers becomes the first player in major league history to record 300 career saves as Milwaukee defeats the Seattle Mariners, 3-2.

1984 - Victoria Roche, a reserve outfielder, became the first girl to ever compete in a Little League World Series game.

1986 - Boston Red Sox player Spike Owens scores six runs (first time in 40 years) in a 24-5 rout of the Cleveland Indians.

2006 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 725th career home run.

2009 - The Dallas Cowboys played their first game at their new stadium in Arlington, TX. During the preseason game, against the Tennessee Titans, the Titans' punter hit the scoreboard hanging in the center of the stadium.
