1860 - The nation's first successful silver mill operation began near Virginia City, Nevada.

1909 - Arapahoe became the first American ship to use the S.O.S. distress signal.

1934 - The first inmates arrived at the federal prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay.

1952 - King Hussein of Jordan ascended the throne after his father had been declared mentally unfit.

1954 - A formal peace took hold in Indochina, ending more than seven years of fighting between the French and the Communist Vietminh.

1960 - The African nation of Chad gained its independence from France.

1965 - Following the arrest of a young black motorist, deadly rioting and looting broke out in the predominantly black Watts section of Los Angeles. The riots lasted for six days and left 34 dead.

1984 - During a voice test for a paid political radio address, President Ronald Reagan joked that he had "signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

1992 - The Mall of America, the biggest shopping mall in the country, opened in Bloomington, Minnesota.

1997 - President Bill Clinton made the first use of the historic line-item veto, rejecting three items in spending and tax bills. (However, the U.S. Supreme Court later struck down the veto as unconstitutional.)

1998 - British Petroleum purchased Amoco for $49 billion.

2000 - Pat Buchanan won the Reform Party presidential nomination.

2002 - US Airways filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

2003 - NATO took command of the 5,000-strong peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.

2003 - Charles Taylor resigned as Liberia's president and went into exile in Nigeria.

2006 - The Transportation Security Administration banned all liquids, gels and aerosols from passenger cabins on airliners one day after a thwarted terrorist attack.

2009 - Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of President John F. Kennedy and founder of the Special Olympics, died at age 88.

2014 - Actor and comedian Robin Williams died at age 63 from suicide.

1919 - The Green Bay Packers are founded.

1929 - Babe Ruth becomes the first player in major league history to hit 500 career home runs.

1951 - The first color broadcast of a baseball game takes place. WCBS in New York City airs the matchup between the Boston Braves and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1961 - Pitcher Warren Spahn records his 300th victory.

1967 - Al Downing becomes the 12th pitcher in major league history to strike out the side on just nine pitches.

1970 - Jim Bunning joins Cy Young as the only pitchers to have won 100 games in each league.

1971 - Harmon Killebrew hits his 500th career home run.

1974 - Lee Trevino wins the PGA Championship.

1984 - Carl Lewis duplicates Jesse Owens' feat by winning four Olympic gold medals in track and field.

1984 - The Cincinnati Reds retire Johnny Bench's No. 5.

1985 - Dave Kingman of the Oakland Athletics becomes the 21st player in baseball history to hit 400 home runs.

1986 - Bob Tway wins the PGA Championship.

1988 - Gary Carter of the New York Mets becomes the 59th player to hit 300 career home runs.

1991 - Rookie John Daly wins the PGA Championship.

2015 - For the first time in major league history, all games played on the same day (15) were won by the home team.
