1680 - Pueblo Indians launched a successful revolt against Spanish colonists in present-day New Mexico.

1792 - During the French Revolution, mobs in Paris attacked the Tuileries Palace, where King Louis XVI resided. (The king was later arrested, but on trial for treason, and executed.)

1821 - Missouri became the 24th state.

1846 - The Smithsonian Institution was established in Washington, D.C. from a gift of $500,000 left by British scientist James Smithson.

1874 - Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, was born in West Branch, Iowa.

1885 - America's first commercially operated electric streetcar began operation in Baltimore.

1921 - Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with polio at his summer home on Campobello Island.

1944 - U.S. forces seized Guam from Japan during World War II.

1949 - The National Military Establishment was renamed the Department of Defense.

1962 - Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man made his debut in issue #15 of "Amazing Fantasy".

1962 - The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum was dedicated in West Branch, Iowa, on the 88th birthday of the former president, who attended the ceremony along with former President Harry S. Truman.

1969 - Leno and Rosemary LaBianca were murdered in their Los Angeles home by members of Charles Manson's cult, one day after actress Sharon Tate and four others were found slain.

1977 - David Berkowitz, the suspect in the "Son of Sam" murders, was arrested. (Berkowitz is serving six consecutive 25-years-to-life sentences for the murders of six people and the wounding of seven others.)

1988 - President Ronald Reagan signed a bill that awarded $20,000 to each survivor of the Japanese-American internment during World War II.

1993 - Ruth Bader Ginsburg was sworn in as the second female justice of the United States Supreme Court.

2006 - British authorities announced they had thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up 10 aircraft heading to the United States.

1971 - Harmon Kilebrew became the 10th major league player to hit 500 career home runs.

1973 - Arnold Palmer did not make the cut for the final two rounds of the PGA Golf Championship. It was the first time in his career.

1977 - Philadelphia Phillies and Montreal Expos play a doubleheader that ends at 3:23 AM.

1980 - Jack Nicklaus wins the PGA Championship for the fifth time in his career.

1981 - The Philadelphia Phillies' Pete Rose passes Stan Musial as the all-time National League hit leader when he collects his 3,631st off Saint Louis Cardinals' pitcher Mark Littell.

1984 - Mary Decker trips on heel of Zola Budd during 3,000m Olympic run.

1986 - The New York Yankees retire Billy Martin's #1.

2008 - American swimmer Michael Phelps won the first of a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympic Games.

2008 - Padraig Harrington of Ireland wins the PGA Championship.

2012 - At the London Olympics, the United States won the women's 4x100-meter track relay in a world-record time of 40.82 seconds to give the Americans their first victory in the event since 1996.

2016 - John Saunders, the versatile sportscaster who hosted ESPN's "The Sports Reporters" for 15 years, died in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, at age 61.
