1918 - The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Boston Braves 2-0 in 21 innings.

1936 - 100,000 saluted Adolf Hitler on his entrance at the opening of the Berlin Olympics.

1945 - Mel Ott hit his 500th career home run.

1950 - The American Bowling Congress ends its "all white males" rule.

1970 - Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates ties a major league record with five extra-base hits in one game.

1972 - Nate Colbert of the San Diego Padres ties a major league record with five home runs in a doubleheader.

1982 - American Greg Louganis becomes the first diver to score 700 (752.67) in 11 dives.

1986 - Minnesota Twins pitcher Bert Blyleven becomes the 10th player in major league history to throw 3,000 strikeouts.

1987 - Mike Tyson defeats Tony Tucker to become the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion.

1993 - Reggie Jackson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1996 - American sprinter Michael Johnson sets a new world record in the 200 meter dash at the Atlanta Summer Olympics with a time of 19.32 seconds.

2005 - Rafael Palmeiro of the Baltimore Orioles becomes the highest profile player to be suspended for violating the Major League Baseball steroid policy.
