1789 - George Washington took the oath of office in New York to become the first president of the United States.

1803 - The United States formally purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for approximately $15 million.

1812 - Louisiana became the 18th state.

1859 - "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens was first published in serial form in a literary magazine.

1900 - Hawaii was organized as a U.S. territory.

1939 - The New York World's Fair opened. At the fair, commercial television made its debut as the first TV signal was transmitted from the Empire State Building.

1945 - Adolf Hitler and his newly married mistress Eva Braun committed suicide in a bunker in Berlin as Soviet troops approached his location.

1958 - The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) was founded in Washington, D.C.

1970 - President Richard Nixon announced the United States was sending troops into Cambodia.

1975 - The South Vietnamese capital of Saigon fell to Communist forces, bringing an end to the Vietnam War.

1919 - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 9-0 in 20 innings.

1921 - The American Professional Football Association (now NFL) reorganizes in Akron, Ohio.

1922 - Charlie Robertson of the Chicago White Sox throws a perfect game against the Detroit Tigers.

1939 - Lou Gehrig plays in his final game with the New York Yankees, he had played 2,130 consecutive games.

1944 - Mel Ott of the New York Giants scores six runs in one game and draws five walks.

1946 - Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians throws his second career no-hitter in a win over the New York Yankees.

1958 - Ted Williams becomes the 10th player in major league history with 1,000 career extra-base hits.

1961 - Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants hits four home runs in one game against the Milwaukee Braves.

1967 - Stu Miller and Steve Barber of the Baltimore Orioles combine to throw a no-hitter but still lose to the Detroit Tigers 2-1.

1969 - Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds throws his third career no-hitter in a 10-0 win over the Houston Astros.

1971 - The Milwaukee Bucks beat the Baltimore Bullets in four games to win the NBA championship.

1985 - The Buffalo Bills selected Virginia Tech defensive end Bruce Smith with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.

1985 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1985 NFL Draft: OG - Mark Traynowicz (2nd round, Buffalo); OT - Mark Behning (2nd round, Pittsburgh); DB - Bret Clark (7th round, Los Angeles Raiders); LB - Scott Stasburger (9th round, Dallas); RB - Jeff Smith (10th round, Kansas City); and WR - Shane Swanson (12th round, Cleveland)

1987 - NASCAR driver Bill Elliott sets the all-time fastest lap at Talladega Motor Speedway at 211 mph.

1988 - Dave Winfield of the New York Yankees ties a major league record with his 29th RBI of April.

1990 - Brian Holman of the Seattle Mariners sees his perfect game broken up with two outs in the 9th inning.

1993 - Top-ranked women's tennis player Monica Seles was stabbed in the back by a man who ran onto the court during a match in Hamburg, Germany.

1996 - The New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles play the longest nine-inning game in major league history. The game took four hours and 21 minutes to complete.

1997 - Heavyweight boxer Riddick Bowe announces his retirement with a career-record of 40-1 with 32 KOs.

1997 - The Atlanta Braves set a major league record with their 19th win in the month of April.

2002 - Alex Rodriguez became the second youngest major league player to reach 250 home runs, reaching the mark at 26 years, 277 days old. Only Jimmie Foxx reached the mark faster.

2005 - Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig asks players to agree to a 50-game suspension for the first offense for the use of steroids, 100-game suspension for the second offense, and a lifelong ban after the third offense.

2015 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2015 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2015 NFL Draft: RB - Ameer Abdullah (2nd round, Detroit); LB - Randy Gregory (2nd round, Dallas); and WR - Kenny Bell (5th round, Tampa Bay)
