1492 - Joan or Arc entered the besieged city of Orleans to lead a victory over the English.

1861 - Maryland's House of Delegates voted against seceding from the Union.

1862 - New Orleans fell to Union forces during the Civil War.

1899 - Jazz musician and bandleader Duke Ellington was born Edward Kennedy Ellington in Washington, D.C.

1916 - The Easter uprising in Dublin collapsed as Irish nationalists surrendered to British authorities.

1945 - Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler married his longtime mistress Eva Braun in a Berlin bunker. (The couple killed themselves the next day.)

1945 - American soldiers liberated the Dachau concentration camp in Germany during World War II.

1980 - Film director Alfred Hitchcock died at age 80.

1981 - Truck driver Peter Sutcliffe admitted in a London court to being the "Yorkshire Ripper", the killer of 13 women in northern England over five years.

1992 - Deadly rioting that claimed 54 lives and caused more than $1 billion in damage erupted in Los Angeles after a jury in Simi Valley acquitted four Los Angeles police officers of almost all state charges in the videotaped beating of Rodney King.

1996 - The musical "Rent" opened on Broadway.

1997 - A worldwide treaty to ban chemical weapons went into effect.

1997 - The first joint U.S.-Russian space walk was made by Jerry Linenger and Vasily Tsibliyev from the space station Mir.

1980 - The Detroit Lions selected Oklahoma running back Billy Sims with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.

1980 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1980 NFL Draft: TE Junior Miller (1st round, 7th pick, Atlanta); DT Rod Horn (3rd round, Cincinnati); DE Bill Barnett (3rd round, Miami); WR Tim Smith (3rd round, Houston); RB I.M. Hipp (4th round, Atlanta); DT Dan Pensick (5th round, Kansas City); OG John Havekost (7th round, Denver); C Kelly Saalfeld (9th round, Green Bay); OT Mark Goodspeed (9th round, Miami); and WR Kenny Brown (10th round, Minnesota)

1981 - Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies became the first left-handed pitcher in the major leagues to get 3,000 career strikeouts.

1986 - Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox set a major league record by striking out 20 batters in a regular nine inning game vs the Seattle Mariners. (He would repeat the feat in 1996.)

1986 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Auburn running back Bo Jackson with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. (Jackson never signed with Tampa Bay.)

1986 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1986 NFL Draft: FB Tom Rathman (3rd round, San Francisco); DE Jim Skow (3rd round, Cincinnati); RB Paul Miles (7th round, Seattle); and C Bill Lewis (7th round, Los Angeles Raiders)

1988 - The Baltimore Orioles snapped their 21-game losing streak and picked up their first win of the year, 9-0 over the Chicago White Sox.

1990 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Houston Rockets 104-100 to give coach Pat Riley his 100th career playoff victory, breaking the old NBA record of 99 held by Red Auerbach.

1990 - Kansas City Royals closer Dan Quisenberry retired.

1996 - John Franco of the New York Mets became the eighth pitcher in history to record 300 saves.

2006 - The Houston Texans selected North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2006 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2006 NFL Draft: S Daniel Bullocks (2nd round, Detroit); P Sam Koch (6th round, Baltimore); DT LeKevin Smith (6th round, New England); and DT Titus Adams (7th round, New York Jets)

2007 - The Oakland Raiders traded WR Randy Moss to the New England Patriots in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick.

2010 - The NCAA Division I Board of Directors announced plans to expand the men's NCAA Basketball Tournament from 65 teams to 68 teams.

2011 - The Memphis Grizzlies became the second No. 8 seed to eliminate a No. 1 seed in the first round of the NBA Playoffs since the first round adopted the best-of-seven format after they knocked off the San Antonio Spurs.

2014 - Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was banned for life from the NBA and fined $2.5 million for his alleged racially charged comments that were taped by his girlfriend and sent to media outlets.
