1758 - James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

1788 - Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the Constitution of the United States.

1789 - The crew of the British ship Bounty mutineed, setting Captain William Bligh and 18 sailors adrift in a launch in the South Pacific.

1937 - Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was born near the desert town of Tikrit.

1942 - Pollster George Gallup said most Americans preferred to call the then-current global conflict "World War II" or "The Second World War" (other suggestions included "Survival War" or "War of World Freedom").

1945 - Benito Mussolini, the former dictator of Italy during World War II, was executed.

1947 - A six-man expedition set out from Peru aboard a balsa wood raft named the Kon-Tiki on a 101-day journey across the Pacific Ocean to the Polynesian Islands.

1952 - War with Japan officially ended as a treaty signed in San Francisco the year before took effect.

1952 - Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower resigned as Supreme Allied commander in Europe; he was succeeded by Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway.

1974 - Former Attorney General John Mitchell and former Commerce Secretary Maurice H. Stans, accused of attempting to interfere in a Securities and Exchange Commission probe of financier Robert Vesco in exchange for a $200,000 contribution to President Richard Nixon's re-election campaign, were acquitted of all charges by a federal jury in New York.

1980 - Secretary of State Cyrus Vance resigned over his opposition to the failed rescue mission aimed at freeing American hostages in Iran.

1990 - The musical "A Chorus Line" closed after 6,137 performances on Broadway.

1992 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture unveiled its first "food pyramid".

1994 - Former CIA official Aldrich Ames, who had betrayed U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union and then Russia, pleaded guilty to espionage and tax evasion and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

1996 - President Bill Clinton gave 4 1/2 hours of videotaped testimony as a defense witness in the criminal trial of his former Whitewater business partners.

2001 - A Russian rocket lifted off from Central Asia bearing the first space tourist, California businessman Dennis Tito, and two cosmonauts on a journey to the international space station.

2003 - Apple Computer Inc. launched the iTunes music store.

2004 - The Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal first came to light when graphic photos of U.S. soldiers physically abusing and humiliating Iraqi prisoners were shown on CBS's "60 Minutes II".

2009 - Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched from the Republican to the Democratic Party.

2011 - President Barack Obama reshuffled his national security team, with CIA Director Leon Panetta succeeding Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Gen. David Petraeus replacing Panetta at the CIA.

2011 - Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy pleaded guilty to kidnapping and raping Jaycee Dugard, who was abducted in California in 1991 at age 11 and rescued 18 years later. (The Garridos were sentenced to life in prison.)

1930 - The first organized night baseball game was played in Independence, Kansas.

1961 - Warren Spahn pitches second no-hitter at age 41, beats San Francisco Giants, 1-0.

1966 - The Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1967 - Heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali was stripped of his title after he refused to be inducted into the armed forces. He cited religious grounds for his refusal.

1971 - Hank Aaron hit the 600th home run of his career.

1981 - The New Orleans Saints select South Carolina running back George Rogers with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1987 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1988 - The Baltimore Orioles lost their 21st consecutive game to open the season, setting a major league record for worst start to a season.

1992 - Milwaukee Brewers beat Toronto Blue Jays 22-2 with American League record 31 hits in 9 innings.

1993 - Dale Hunter (Washington Capitals) executed a blindside check on Pierre Turgeon (New York Islanders). On May 4 Hunter was given a 21 game suspension.

2007 - The Oakland Raiders selected LSU quarterback Jamarcus Russell with the first pick in the NFL Draft.
