1758 - James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

1788 - Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the Constitution.

1789 - There was a mutiny on the HMS Bounty as rebelling crew members of the British ship, led by Fletcher Christian, set the captain, William Bligh, and 18 others adrift in a launch in the south Pacific. (Bligh and most of the men with him, reached Timor in 47 days.)

1817 - The United States and Britain signed the Rush-Bagot Treaty, which limited the number of naval vessels allowed in the Great Lakes.

1925 - The International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts, which gave rise to the term "Art Deco" began a six-month run in Paris.

1937 - Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was born near the town of Tikrit.

1945 - Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, were executed by Italian partisans as they attempted to flee the country.

1947 - A six-man expedition sailed from Peru aboard a balsa wood raft named the Kon-Tiki on a 101-day journey across the Pacific Ocean to Polynesia.

1952 - War with Japan officially ended as a treaty signed in San Francisco the year before took effect.

1974 - A federal jury in New York acquitted former Attorney General John Mitchell and former Commerce Secretary Maurice H. Stans of charges in connection with a secret $200,000 contribution to President Richard Nixon's re-election campaign from financier Robert Vesco.

1980 - Secretary of State Cyrus Vance resigned over his opposition to the failed rescue mission aimed at freeing American hostages in Iran.

1988 - A flight attendant was killed and more than 60 persons injured when part of the roof of an Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 tore off during a flight from Hilo to Honolulu.

1990 - The musical "A Chorus Line" closed after 6,137 performances on Broadway.

1992 - The Department of Agriculture unveiled its first "food pyramid".

1994 - Former CIA official Aldrich Ames, who had betrayed U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union and then Russia, pleaded guilty to espionage and tax evasion and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

1996 - President Bill Clinton gave 4 1/2 hours of videotaped testimony as a defense witness in the criminal trial of his former Whitewater business partners.

1996 - A man armed with a semiautomatic rifle went on a rampage on the Australian island of Tasmania, killing 35 people; Martin Bryant was captured by police after a 12-hour standoff and is currently serving life in prison.

2001 - A Russian rocket lifted off from Central Asia bearing the first space tourist, California businessman Dennis Tito, and two cosmonauts on a journey to the International Space Station.

2003 - Apple Computer Inc. launched the iTunes store.

2004 - The Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal first comes to light when graphic photos of U.S. soldiers physically abusing and humiliating Iraqi prisoners were shown on CBS's 60 Minutes II.

2009 - Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched from the Republican to the Democratic Party.

2011 - President Barack Obama reshuffled his national security team with CIA Director Leon Panetta succeeding Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Gen. David Petraeus replacing Panetta at the CIA.

2011 - Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and raping Jaycee Dugard, who was abducted in California in 1991 at age 11 and rescued 18 years later. (The Garridos were sentenced to life in prison.)

1901 - Cleveland Blues' pitcher Bock Baker gives up a record 23 singles as Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland Blues 13-1.

1923 - London's Wembley Stadium opens.

1930 - The first organized night baseball game is played in Independence, Kansas.

1956 - Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds hits the first of his 586 career home runs.

1961 - At age 41, Warren Spahn pitches the second no-hitter of his career in a win over the San Francisco Giants.

1966 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1967 - Heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali refused to be inducted into the U.S. Army.

1971 - Hank Aaron hits his 600th career home run.

1981 - The New Orleans Saints select South Carolina running back George Rogers with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1987 - The NBA announces expansion franchises for Charlotte and Miami for the 1988-89 season and Minneapolis and Orlando for the 1989-90 season.

1987 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Miami (FL) quarterback Vinny Testaverde with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.

1987 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1987 NFL Draft: DT - Danny Noonan (1st round, 12th pick, Dallas); CB - Brian Davis (2nd round, Washington); LB - Marc Munford (4th round, Denver); OG - Stan Parker (9th round, New York Giants);

1988 - The Baltimore Orioles lose a Major League record 21st straight game to start the season.

1990 - The Boston Celtics score an NBA playoff record 157 points in a 157-128 win over the New York Knicks.

1992 - The Milwaukee Brewers rout the Toronto Blue Jays 22-2 with an American League record 31 hits in nine innings.

1993 - Dale Hunter (Washington Capitals) executed a blindside check on Pierre Turgeon (New York Islanders). On May 4 Hunter was given a 21 game suspension for one of the worst "cheap shots" in hockey history.

2007 - The Oakland Raiders selected LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.

2007 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2007 NFL Draft: DT - Adam Carriker (1st round, 13th pick, St. Louis); RB - Brandon Jackson (2nd round, Green Bay); LB - Stewart Bradley (3rd round, Philadelphia); and DE - Jay Moore (4th round, San Francisco)

2011 - The Carolina Panthers selected Auburn quarterback Cam Newton with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.
