1507 - A world map produced by German cartographer Martin Wadseemueller contained the first-recorded use of the term "America", in honor of Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci.

1792 - Highwayman Nicolas Jacques Pelletier became the first person under French law to be executed by the guillotine.

1859 - Ground was broken for the Suez Canal.

1862 - During the Civil War, a Union fleet commanded by Flag Officer David G. Farragut captured New Orleans.

1898 - The United States declared war on Spain.

1901 - New York Gov. Benjamin Barker Odell, Jr. signed an automobile registration bill which imposed a 15 mph speed limit on highways and made New York the first state to require license plates on automobiles.

1928 - The first seeing eye dog was presented to Morris S. Frank.

1944 - The United Negro College Fund was founded.

1945 - During World War II, U.S. and Soviet forces linked up on the Elbe River, a meeting that dramatized the collapse of Nazi Germany's defenses.

1945 - Delegates from some 50 nations gathered in San Francisco to organize the United Nations.

1953 - The Francis Crick and James Watson article describing the double-helix of DNA was published in Nature magazine.

1983 - 10-year-old Samantha Smith of Manchester, Maine received a reply from Soviet leader Yuri V. Andropov to a letter she had written expressing concern about possible nuclear war; Andropov reassured Samantha that the Soviet Union did not want war, and he invited her to visit his country, a trip Samantha made in July.

1990 - The Hubble Space Telescope was deployed in orbit from the space shuttle Discovery.

1992 - Islamic forces took control of most of Afghanistan after the Soviet-controlled government collapsed.

2003 - The Georgia legislature voted to scrap the Confederate flag design from its state flag.

2007 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 13,000 for the first time.

2015 - A magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepal killed more than 8,200 people.

1876 - The Chicago Cubs play their first National League game, beating the Louisville Grays 4-0.

1901 - In the first major league game played in Detroit, the Tigers, trailing by a score of 13-4 in the bottom of the 9th inning, score ten runs to win 14-4 in one of the greatest comebacks in baseball history.

1952 - The Minneapolis Lakers defeat the New York Knicks in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1952 - The American Bowling Congress approved the use of an automatic pinsetter.

1956 - Rocky Marciano retired as the undefeated heavyweight boxing champion of the world. He had a career professional record of 46-0 with 43 knockouts and 3 decisions.

1964 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1965 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in five games to win the NBA championship.

1974 - The NFL votes to move the goal posts and to institute the sudden-death playoff.

1977 - The Cincinnati Reds tie a major league record by scoring 12 runs in one inning in a game against the Atlanta Braves, which the Reds won 23-9.

1989 - Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins ties an NHL playoff record with four goals in the first period.

1993 - The New England Patriots selected Washington State quarterback Drew Bledsoe with the No. 1 pick in the 1993 NFL Draft.

1993 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1993 NFL Draft: DT - John Parrella (2nd round, Buffalo); OG - Will Shields (3rd round, Kansas City); RB - Derek Brown (4th round, New Orleans); CB - Tyrone Hughes (5th round, New Orleans); LB - Travis Hill (7th round, Cleveland); RB - Lance Lewis (7th round, Indianapolis)

1995 - The 257-day Major League Baseball strike officially comes to an end.

2001 - San Diego Padres outfielder Rickey Henderson breaks the career walks record held by Babe Ruth when he received his 2,063rd walk.

2009 - The Detroit Lions select Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Stafford signs the richest rookie contract in NFL history with the Detroit Lions, signing a six year contract worth $78 million and up to $41.7 million in guaranteed money.

2009 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2009 NFL Draft: LB - Cody Glenn (5th round, Washington); OG - Matt Slauson (6th round, New York Jets); and OT - Lydon Murtha (7th round, Detroit)

2010 - The NHL implemented a new rule that allowed the NHL Hockey Operations Department to review any hit where the head was targeted and/or the principal point of contact for the purpose of Supplementary Discipline.

2013 - The Kansas City Chiefs select Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.
