1877 - Federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans, ending the North's post-Civil War rule in the South.

1898 - Spain declared war on the United States after rejecting America's ultimatum to withdraw from Cuba.

1915 - The Ottoman Empire rounded up Armenian political and cultural leaders in Constantinople at the start of what many scholars regard as the first genocide of the 20th century, in which an estimated 1.5 million Armenians died.

1916 - The Easter uprising began when some 1,600 Irish nationalists seized several key sites in Dublin.

1953 - Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

1901 - The first American League baseball game is played: the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Blues 8-2.

1957- The Chicago Cubs walk a record nine players in one inning in a game against the Cincinnati Reds.

1962 - Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers records the second 18-strikeout game of his career.

1963 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games to win the NBA championship. It was the fifth straight title for the Celtics.

1966 - The Atlanta Braves win a National League record 18-straight home games.

1967 - The Philadelphia 76ers defeat the San Francisco Warriors in six games to win the NBA championship.

1974 - The NFL awards an expansion franchise to Tampa Bay.

1978 - Nolan Ryan strikes out at least 15 batters in a game for the 20th time in his career.

1981 - The San Antonio Spurs tie an NBA record by blocking 20 shots from the Golden State Warriors in a regulation game.

1988 - The Atlanta Falcons select Auburn linebacker Aundray Bruce with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1988 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1988 NFL Draft: DE - Neil Smith (1st round, 2nd pick, Kansas City); OT - Tim Rother (4th round, Los Angeles Raiders); RB - Keith Jones (6th round, Los Angeles Rams); TE - Keith Neubert (8th round, New York Jets); DB - Brian Washington (10th round, Cleveland); WR - Hendley Hawkins (11th round, Cleveland); and LB - Steve Forch (11th round, Chicago)

1994 - David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs scores 71 points in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers, the seventh highest single-game total in NBA history. The performance gave Robinson the season scoring title by a 0.5 point average over Shaquille O'Neal.

1994 - The Cincinnati Bengals select Ohio State defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson with the first pick in the 1994 NFL Draft.

1994 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1994 NFL Draft: LB - Trev Alberts (1st round, 5th pick, Indianapolis); S - Toby Wright (2nd round, Los Angeles Rams); RB - Calvin Jones (3rd round, Los Angeles Raiders); CB - John Reece (4th round, Arizona); and OT - Lance Lundberg (7th round, New Orleans)

2004 - The San Diego Chargers selected Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning with the first pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, the Chargers then immediately traded Manning to the New York Giants.

2004 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2004 NFL Draft: LB - Demorrio Williams (4th round, Atlanta); RB - Jammal Lord (6th round, Houston); C - Josh Sewell (6th round, Denver); DT - Ryon Bingham (7th round, San Diego); and DE - Trevor Johnson (7th round, New York Jets)
