1616 - Playwright William Shakespeare died in Stratford-on-Avon, England.

1898 - Spain declared war on the United States, which responded in kind two days later.

1940 - About 200 people died in the Rhythm Night Club Fire in Natchez, Mississippi.

1969 - Sirhan Sirhan was sentenced to death (later reduced to a life sentence) for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

1971 - Hundreds of Vietnam War veterans opposed to the conflict protested by tossing their medals and ribbons over a wire fence in front of the U.S. Capitol.

1985 - Coca-Cola announced it was changing its formula and introduced "New Coke."

1988 - A federal ban on smoking during domestic airline flights of two hours or less went into effect.

1992 - McDonald’s opened its first fast-food restaurant in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

1993 - Labor leader Cesar Chavez died in San Luis, Arizona, at age 66.

1998 - James Earl Ray, the convicted assassin of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., died in Nashville at age 70.

2004 - The United States resumed diplomatic relations with Libya.

2005 - The recently created video-sharing website YouTube uploaded its first clip, “Me at the Zoo,” which showed YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim standing in front of an elephant enclosure at the San Diego Zoo.

2007 - Boris Yeltsin, Russia’s first freely elected president, died in Moscow at age 76.

2013 - France legalized same-sex marriage after a wrenching national debate that exposed deep conservatism in the nation’s heartland and triggered huge demonstrations.

2018 - A man plowed a rental van into crowds of pedestrians in Toronto, killing 10 people and leaving 16 others hurt; (Alek Minassian was later convicted of 10 counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison.)

2020 - At a White House briefing, President Donald Trump noted that researchers were looking at the effects of disinfectants on the coronavirus, and wondered aloud whether they could be injected into people.

2021 - U.S. health officials lifted an 11-day pause on COVID-19 vaccinations using Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose shot, after scientific advisers decided its benefits outweighed a rare risk of blood clot.

1903 - The New York Highlanders (Yankees) win their first game; beat Washington Senators, 7-2 at American League Park

1914 - The first major league baseball game at Wrigley Field in Chicago took place.

1950 - The Minneapolis Lakers won the inaugural NBA championship, defeating the Syracuse Nationals in six games.

1954 - Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit the first of his MLB record 755 career home runs.

1964 - Ken Johnson (Houston Astros) threw the first no-hitter for a loss. The game was lost 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds due to two errors.

1989 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played his last regular season game in the NBA.

1989 - The Dallas Cowboys select UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2002 - Brent Johson (St. Louis Blues) became the first NHL goalie to win his first 3 wins in the playoffs by shutout. He was only the fourth goalie to record three straight NHL playoff shutouts.

2005 - The San Francisco 49ers select Utah quarterback Alex Smith with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2020 - The Cincinnati Bengals select LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the first pick in the NFL Draft.
