1864 - Congress authorized the use of the phrase "In God We Trust" on U.S. coins.

1870 - Communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin was born in Russia.

1889 - The Oklahoma Land Rush began at noon as thousands of homesteaders staked claims.

1954 - The televised Senate Army-McCarthy hearings began.

1970 - Earth Day was observed for the first time.

1983 - The West German news magazine Stern announced the discovery of personal diaries purportedly written by Adolf Hitler that turned out to be a hoax.

1993 - The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum was dedicated in Washington, D.C.

1994 - Richard M. Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, died at age 81 in New York City, four days after suffering a stroke.

2000 - Armed immigration agents seized Elian Gonzalez from his relatives' home in Miami; the 6-year-old boy was reunited with his father.

2005 - Zacarias Moussaoui pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring with the Sept. 11 hijackers to kill Americans. (He was later sentenced to life in prison.)

2010 - The Deepwater Horizon oil platform, operated by BP, sank into the Gulf of Mexico two days after a massive explosion that killed 11 workers.

1823 - RJ Tyres patents roller skates.

1876 - The first National League baseball game is played. 3,000 fans saw the Boston Red Stockings (now Atlanta Braves) defeat the Philadelphia Athletics 6-5 in Philadelphia. The other six charter members of the National League were the Chicago White Stockings (now Cubs), Hartford Dark Blues, Mutual of New York, St. Louis Brown Stockings, Cincinnati Red Stockings and the Louisville Grays.

1915 - The New York Yankees don pinstripes and hat-in-the-ring logo for the first time.

1945 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1947 - The Philadelphia Warriors defeated the Chicago Stags in six games to win the first NBA championship.

1954 - The NBA adopts the 24-second shot clock and six team-foul rule.

1962 - The New York Mets tie a National League record by losing their first nine games to start the season.

1962 - The Pittsburgh Pirates tie a National League record by winning their first ten games of the season.

1962 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1970 - Tom Seaver of the New York Mets strikes out 19 batters, including 10 in a row in a win over the San Diego Padres.

1982 - The Atlanta Braves' record 13-game winning streak to start the season is snapped.

1989 - Nolan Ryan registers his 5,000th career strikeout.

1990 - The Indianapolis Colts selected Illinois quarterback Jeff George with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.

1995 - Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter was taken with the No. 1 pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

2008 - John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves becomes the 16th pitcher in Major League history with 3,000 career strikeouts.

2010 - The NFL Draft aired in primetime for the first time.

2010 - Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was taken with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams.
