1916 - Wrigley Field in Chicago hosts its first Cubs game. The Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 in the first game played.
1920 - Philadelphia Phillies' manager Gravvy Cravath puts himself in as pinch hitter, makes a three-run homer and beats New York Giants 3-0.
1920 - The Summer Olympic Games open in Antwerp, Belgium.
1939 - Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams made his major league debut with the Boston Red Sox.
1944 - The NFL legalizes coaching from the bench.
