1775 - Paul Revere began his ride from Charlestown to Lexington, Massachusetts, warning American colonists that the British were coming.

1906 - A major earthquake struck San Francisco and set off raging fires, killing more than 3,000 people and destroying more than four square miles of the city.

1942 - An air squadron led by Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle raided Tokyo and other Japanese cities.

1946 - The League of Nations went out of business.

1949 - The Irish Republic was proclaimed.

1955 - Physicist Albert Einstein died at age 76.

1956 - Actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco.

1968 - London Bridge was sold to an American, who had it disassembled, shipped and rebuilt in Arizona.

1978 - The U.S. Senate approved the Panama Canal Treaty, providing for the complete turnover of control of the waterway to Panama on the last day of 1999.

1983 - A suicide bomber killed 63 people, including 17 Americans, at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon.

1989 - Thousands of Chinese students demanding democracy tried to storm Communist Party headquarters in Beijing.

2004 - Spanish Prime Minister Jose Louis Rodriguez Zapatero ordered a withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq.

2007 - The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, upheld a federal ban on a medical procedure that opponents called partial-birth abortion.

2011 - Standard & Poor's lowered its long-term outlook for the U.S. government's fiscal health from "stable" to "negative".

2012 - Dick Clark, the TV host and producer who helped bring rock 'n' roll into the mainstream on "American Bandstand" and rank in the New Year for the masses at Times Square, died at age 82.

1923 - The first baseball game was played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, with New York beating the Boston Red Sox 4-1.

1935 - Gene Sarazen wins the Masters.

1942 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1959 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup.

1962 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games to win the NBA championship. Bill Russell of the Celtics scored 30 points and recorded 40 rebounds in the final game, giving Boston their fourth straight NBA title.

1963 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1964 - Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers becomes the first player to ever strike out the side on just nine pitches.

1966 - Bill Russell became the first player-coach for the Boston Celtics.

1981 - A Minor League baseball game between the Rochester Red Wings and the Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, becomes the longest professional baseball game in history: 8 hours and 25 minutes and 33 innings.

1982 - The Atlanta Braves set a new National League record by winning their 11th straight game to start the season.

1987 - Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies hits his 500th career home run.

1991 - John Stockton of the Utah Jazz breaks his own NBA single-season assists record with 1,136.

1991 - The new Comiskey Park opens in Chicago, but the home team White Sox are crushed 16-0 by the Detroit Tigers before a sellout crowd of 42,191.

1995 - Quarterback Joe Montana announces his retirement from football.

1996 - Nebraska quarterback Brook Berringer was killed in a plane crash near Raymond, Nebraska. Tobey Lake, the brother of Berringer's girlfriend, was also killed in the accident.

1998 - Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning was taken with the No. 1 pick in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.

1998 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1998 NFL Draft: DE - Grant Wistrom (1st round, 6th pick, St. Louis); DT - Jason Peter (1st round, 14th pick, Carolina); S - Scott Frost (3rd round, New York Jets); RB - Ahman Green (3rd round, Seattle); C - Aaron Taylor (7th round, Indianapolis); and CB - Eric Warfield (7th round, Kansas City)

1999 - Wayne Gretzky, the NHL's all-time leading scorer, played his final professional game, at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the New York Rangers.

2005 - It was announced that the NFL's "Monday Night Football" would leave ABC in 2006 for a new home with ESPN. "Monday Night Football" had aired on ABC since 1970.
