1598 - The Edict of Nantes gave religious tolerance to the Huguenots in France.

1613 - Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan, was captured by English Capt. Samuel Argall in the Virginia Colony. (During a yearlong captivity, Pocahontas converted to Christianity and ultimately opted to stay with the English.)

1742 - Handel's Messiah was first publicly performed in Dublin, Ireland.

1743 - Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, was born in Shadwell in the Virginia Colony.

1861 - At the start of the Civil War, Fort Sumter in South Carolina fell to Confederate forces as the Union commander, Maj. Robert Anderson, agreed to surrender in the face of relentless bombardment.

1943 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. on the 200th anniversary of the third American president's birth.

1964 - Sidney Poitier became the first African American to win the Academy Award for best actor.

1970 - Apollo 13 announced "Houston, we've got a problem," when an oxygen tank burst on the way to the moon.

1975 - Civil war began in Lebanon when gunmen killed four Christian Phalangists who retaliated by killing 27 Palestinians.

1986 - Pope John Paul II visited a Rome synagogue in the first recorded papal visit of its kind.

1992 - The Great Chicago Flood took place as the city's century-old tunnel system and adjacent basements filled with water from the Chicago River.

1999 - Jack Kervorkian was sentenced in Pontiac, Mich., to 10 to 25 years in prison for the second-degree murder of a man whose assisted suicide was videotaped and shown on "60 Minutes."

2011 - Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons were detained for investigation of corruption, abuse of power and killings of protesters.

2012 - Kwangmyŏngsŏng-3, a North Korean Earth observation satellite, exploded shortly after its launch. The U.S. and other countries called the launch a violation of United Nations Security Council rules.

1914 - The Federal League plays its first game: the Baltimore Terrapins beat the Buffalo Blues 3-2.

1927 - The Ottawa Senators defeat the Boston Bruins to win the Stanley Cup.

1933 - The New York Rangers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup.

1940 - The New York Rangers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup.

1944 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1949 - The Minneapolis Lakers defeat the Washington Capitals in six games to win the NBA championship.

1954 - Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron made his major league debut with the Milwaukee Braves.

1957 - The Boston Celtics defeat the St. Louis Hawks in seven games to win the NBA championship for the first time in franchise history.

1962 - Stan Musial scores his 1,869th run, a new National League record.

1963 - Pete Rose triples for his first major league hit.

1963 - Pittsburgh Pirates' Bob Friend balks four times in a game.

1972 - The first baseball players' strike ends after 13 days.

1975 - Jack Nicklaus wins the Masters for the fifth time.

1980 - Seve Ballesteros wins the Masters.

1984 - On the same date he got his first major league hit 21-years earlier, Pete Rose of the Montreal Expos makes hits 4,000th hit.

1986 - Jack Nicklaus wins the Masters for a record sixth time and became the tournament's oldest winner at 46 years of age. Nicklaus also set a record with his 18th major championship.

1986 - The Boston Celtics end the regular season with a home record of 40-1.

1997 - Tiger Woods, at age 21, became the youngest player to ever win the Masters and the first of African American golfer to win a major golf title. Woods also won the Masters by a record 12 shots and set a tournament scoring record with a 270 (18 under par).

1997 - The Hartford Whalers play their final game in the NHL.

2003 - Mike Weir became the first Canadian to win the Masters.

2004 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco 49ers hit his 661st career home run, moving past Willie Mays into third place on the all-time list.

2008 - Trevor Immelman won the Masters.

2008 - A construction worker's bid to curse the New York Yankees by planting a Boston Red Sox jersey in their new stadium was foiled when the home team removed the offending shirt from its burial spot.

2011 - A federal jury in San Francisco convicted Barry Bonds of obstruction of justice, but failed to reach a verdict on allegations that he'd used steroids and lied to a grand jury about it.

2014 - Bubba Watson wins the Masters.

2016 - The Golden State Warriors end the regular season with a record of 73-9, breaking the old record of 72-10 set by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for best record in NBA history.
