I was skeptical of the Riley hire and initially unwilling as a fan to give him a "grace period" when I considered the players we had back.
However, after the first drive of the BYU game and the second half of the Miami game I have changed my mind and think this is going to work out just fine. I also think we will win the weak west.
Clearly defense is a problem but injuries have been a legit factor (especially valentine and gangwish) and I am comforted by how we are not getting obliterated by the run like we were the past few years. Many of the big pass plays we're giving up will be fixed w better ball recognition technique which can come. And lastly, we will not face another team w the passing game as good as our four non con opponents' the rest of the year (w the possible exception of mich st).
Offensively we have never had a better wr corps than right now and dpe hasn't even played yet. I was not a fan of Newby and don't think he's great but he has showed me something the last two weeks. Oline seems to be improving.
Most of all I love how we adjust to things and don't get snowballed.
I'm now on board with a transitional year because I see enough to be excited about while realizing the ceiling is high and untouched.
We have to remember most of the teams in our league are playing really bad teams in non con. So records are apples to oranges. We have played what looks like three top 40 teams.
Since we won't win a national title these 2 losses mean little. This year is all about winning the division period. And these four preseason games will prepare us well.
