two years ago, at the height of the "Tim Miles is John Wooden" hysteria around here, I noted that so far he had not done anything Danny Nee had not done. I also said that the verdict was still out on Miles and that I was sceptical he was the guy to turn us around. And I got nothing but criticism and attacks for saying that.

I am not here to say "I told you so" nor am I calling for Miles to be fired. I think the verdict is still out on him and we need to see what he can do. He has recruited better than the last two coaches, but not as well as he should be in my view. Not with our new facilities. So I remain sceptical.

I am sad our team has not improved. But I am glad the Tim Miles hysteria is gone. Now maybe we can offer up a more sober analysis of his abilities as a coach.

Careful. Osborne hired him

Hero to zero. We have some nice pieces going forward. And Anton Gill looked like the best player on the court in the preseason scrimmage. But, we still have no idea what we are doing offensively. Next year will be a big one for Miles.

All I can do is continue to shake my head after last night's woeful performance.
If the officials are going to let Grozelle or whatever their center's name is, hook and clear out with his off arm like he did, we had NO chance at defending him in the low post with his 4-5" height advantage. Miles has brought in the best recruits we've seen since Nee. Right now though its like boys against men with the youngsters we are trying to play in the paint. The whining and bitching about Miles is pretty stupid IMO. We KNEW we were going to be weak in the paint this year with our early declaring "pro center" from last year gone. Miles is trying to build something we haven't had at NU for TWO decades and people want instant success. I really like the new players but man people need to chill. Chew on this, Pitino at MInnesota has now lost AT HOME to both the U of South Dakota AND South Dakota St in less than two weeks.

Last night was painful. We looked lethargic and lost
Our youngsters just got pushed around by a home team with friendly officials and our freshmen had an off night. We couldn't defend Grozelle with his height advantage with the way they let him play in the paint. Wish we had a big like that. At least we've got some offensive talent now but its going to take some development with these kids. They're gonna be good IMO.

noted.

how long is this fuse? its sad considering the taj mahal facilities...

If facilities mattered in recruiting as much as people pretend they do, Duke would suck as much as I say they do.

Duke has had a nice place to practice for 7 years or so now, but they didn't used to and Cameron Indoor is on par with middle-school gymnasiums.

Why do we not have a big guy? He's had plenty of time to bring one in. The one he brought in sucks so that was a swing and a miss. Until we get a 6"11 guy inside that can actually walk and chew gum at the same time we'll get abused like a rented mule.
We defended Jekeri well who is a better player than Groselle. Our strategy was mind boggling though. More concerned that we don't get anything out of the 5 on the offensive end than I am defending the post.

Miles is the best thing Nebraska has had in... maybe forever. I can't speak with evidence, but have pretty good intelligence that Nee brought in players with some extra "support". Iba thought he could slow down games to be competitive. The guys in the middle simply couldn't get it done.

Here are the facts: He inherited a team with not a bunch of talent. He landed a questionable talent in Petteway who turned out to be a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that he got hot and simply got the team to an NCAA tournament, mostly on his own. The curse is that he had to keep riding the hot hand the following year, even though that was not the style of team he has been known for. He now has a team looking much more like his teams did and they are incredibly young. They are talented, yet young.

The way some "fans" on these boards change their opinions from one game to the next is mind boggling to me and I only hope the ones who ride the massive roller coaster aren't bosses. It takes a steady person to see the vision and direction of the team and to not overreact to a frustrating loss to Creighton.

For the first time in several years, I can actually see Nebraska competing for the top 4 spots in the B1G in the near future. I believe this team will knock off a few of the top teams in the conference this season. They likely won't finish .500 in conf. play, but they will sniff it.

Miles is the right man for the job and I can't wait to see the future.

I agree. Next year is huge.

There are some pieces in place, but next year will have to be a strong bounce back year for NU. The freshmen are getting some good quality minutes and by the end of the season they will have a good level of experience. With White and Gill next year along with Watson, McVeigh, Morrow there should not be any 5-7 minute scoring droughts that have killed this team over the last two seasons. Webster still is a mystery, he is getting more aggressive getting to the hoop, but he still seems like a turnover machine.

Starting next season Miles has to find a way to be Creighton, plain and simple. There is no way Creighton should be 16 points better than Nebraska this season.

Sure it was the officials that were "friendly" to the home team and had nothing to do with the way we played. High school kids are taught all of these same techniques so this is nothing new. We just played terrible D. The young kids have to get stronger and learn better positioning and there was no back side help. You can blame officials all day long but they were playing the game right. Losers blame the officials.

Miles plays the dribble, drive and shoot offense and matador D that is not consistent. Where is the ball movement and inside out game? Miles is recruiting much better, but the play, thus far is not living up to it.

Encouraged to see Jacobson knock down a couple 15 footers last night. He had a couple post opportunities, the bounce dribble allowed Creighton to recover which killed his opportunity. Hopefully he learned from that.

I wouldn't mind seeing a rotation of Watson, White, Shields, Morrow and Jacobson. Good to see you last night.

This is what I had in mind when I said his recruiting, though much better than past coaches, has failed to bring in a true difference maker talent and he has failed to bring in a big guy who can play. This is year four folks and I am tired of the excuses. Miles has top tier facilities and good fan support. I think he should be given the full seven years of his contract to turn this around. And maybe the young guys he has brought in will gel and our future is bright. Who knows? I hope so. But so far I remain sceptical that NU basketball is anything different from the dumpster fire it has always been. I am tired of promises. If a freaking team like Butler can make a final four we sure as hell should be able to have a better team.

Unless a couple of our players have 3 or 4 inch growth spurts over the next twelve months, we will still get killed by teams with any size. So if next year is really the year that determines Miles' future, he is in big trouble.

We have too many dead spots on the offensive side. I love Parker and the energy he brings, but he just doesn't belong on the court at this level. He's a great on ball defender, but he gets abused closer to the rim, and is absolutely zero threat on offense. His man can park on help side and watch Shields/White/Webster/etc drive the entire possession, because if he gets the ball outside, either he passes or you like that he's shooting.

I'd like to see Hammond and Jacobson roll to the hoops with a little more enthusiasm, and learn to take that one dribble from the elbow to the rim strong so that their man needs to stay on them on ball screens. As mentioned above, if Jacobson can hit the 15 footer, that is big for us going forward too.

All of that being said, our help defense is the worst I've seen in a long time. Creighton runs some nice stuff, but we sure were making the pick and roll and one dribble drives from the perimeter look like the "Offense 101" videos where there is dummy defense.

No way? Webster scored 15, and White scored 28, and Nebraska lost by 16. Wow. Despite CU's hot early shooting, Nebraska had an opportunity to get back into the game in the first with Huff going out with 2 fouls in the first 3 minutes, and Groselle missing a bunch of minutes in the 1st half after he went down hard. They closed it to 6 at half and then boom, CU extends the lead again in the 2nd.

The only way Nebraska beats CU this year is if Nebraska shoots lights out like Nova vs Georgetown in 1985. It pains me to say this, but they are a way better team and it's not even close.

Thomas (Omaha Benson kid) I wish was wearing a Nebraska uniform, because he took Shields out of the game holding him to 6 points, and 5 turnovers (1 more than Webster had). 2 years in a row they took Shields out of the game for the most part. Is that just luck?

This thought some have that CU isn't as talented as Nebraska is a head scratcher to me. CU gave Arizona State everything they could handle about a week ago. CU's Watson is a very good point guard and CU got lucky getting him as a transfer. Thomas was another steal for them. Zierden was clutch and got them going with clutch early shots. Nebraska fans didn't see what Huff can do, which is scarry.

Next year CU will come to Lincoln with Watson, Thomas, Zierden, and Huff. At the 5 they will probably start Omaha North's Justin Patton, who if he can pack on another 10-15 pounds before then, will cause Hammond all sorts of problems. The addition of Gill will help Nebraska, but you can probably count on Thomas likely guarding White.

If Hammond is the only true post guy Nebraska has next year, and we continue to see this same offense, I have little reason to believe we don't have the same result next year. McDermott knows how to defend Miles' offense. If Nebraska has no inside game, and you have to out-shoot CU from the outside to win, good freaking luck.

Right now Nebraska hopes to beat Creighton. Creighton expects to beat Nebraska.

Nebraska needs Jacobson to be a dependable 10 point, 7 board guy by next year. I'm rooting for him.

The recruiting has improved and yet still, Creighton looked like the big boy team with the more athletic players and way more of them while Nebraska looked like a 3rd place MVC team. The coaching discrepancy appears to be even wider each time they play. Nebraska offers nothing on the offensive end that Creighton isn't fully prepared for and has little trouble defending.

Good to see you as well! I think Jacobsen can provide some matchup problems down the road. He's a bit behind right now due to his injury but it's good to see him get some PT

Would not be surprised if Fuller and Evelyn transfer and we bring in a couple of post players either from the JUCO ranks or senior transfers.

^^^Your whole diatribe here, is this the fan support you speak of? Yep, it's pretty hard to figure out why he hasn't had success with fan support like this. Maybe you can go high five him in the temple with your fist, that would really show how much you love and support this team.

Honest question, are zone defenses illegal like they are in the NBA? Seems like due to our lack of height, we should be playing zone and not allowing a guy like Grosselle get countless 1v1 opportunities last night...yes I understand that opens up the perimeter and yes, Creighton shot well, but good gravy, I'll take my chances of Creighton making 3s rather than some relatively stiff 7 footer getting countless layups and good looks....

Not illegal....I had hoped with some of the length we are recruiting we would start to incorporate some zone into the program but fat chance that ever happening with Miles and Mo on the bench. This team is not all that great at boxing out either so zone would probably be a disaster.

Zone is not illegal in the NBA. I don't have issues with staying in man. When you have to come from behind you have to get turnovers. It's not like CU doesn't know how to attack a zone, and frankly they'd still would have got in to Groselle. If you are going to play zone against CU, you better be built like Baylor a couple of years ago, and we aren't. They'd have just moved the ball around until they put a few dagger 3s in and shot us out of it.

is there any chance White goes NBA after this year, dude's legit and this is the type of player we need more of, he's the only true threat we have. Shields is to up and down, hopefully Gill is legit and helps White out next year and our freshman continue to get better.

I would be really shocked...the NBA draft is only two rounds...bigs and PG's are always in high demand...athletic 2/3's are all over the place...unless you are just a super freak.

White is a very good college player...but is not an NBA player. He could go pro oversees if he wanted to, and that would really suck for us. IMO, Gill and Shields are different players. While his numbers at UL may not show it but Gill is a solid deep threat and has A++ athleticism. He's a true 2 guard. Something we don't really have on this team.

Not being critical here at all of your post but asking an honest question, all I keep reading is next year, next year, since he has been here. When does the day of reckoning come, next year?
i`m a football guy not a hoops guy.

Even if we don't make the postseason next year I don't think Miles is in danger of losing his job. But, in my mind...by the end of next year we will know if he's the right coach or not for this program. He took us to the dance in year 2 which is a huge plus but there is still some question marks that need answered.

Anybody that thinks Miles is in any kind of a bind is nuts. We were one of the worst D-1 basketball programs in the country and he's done more to energize the fan base and recruit players than anybody since Danny Nee. Miles will get it done. He took over a complete train wreck and managed an NCAA berth with a couple of castoff transfers and leftovers from Doc. We're going to have to build big men and that is going to take some time.

Correct. He will and should get a ton of credit for the run to the tourney 2013/2014. That was nothing short of a miracle. Not only does this program have no tradition, our tradition is bad basketball. We've never won a game in the NCAA tournament guys. I'm willing to be patient with Miles. Do I want more? Sure, but I'm seeing better recruiting and some baby steps toward building a pretty good team.

The effort and the talent the new guys showed against Miami has me optimistic about what they can be with some time.
