Tim Miles should be fired

Not yet. As frustrating as it has been, and as annoying as his shtick has become, we need to gut it out for at least one more season after this one - probably two.

I suppose it wouldn't look as bad if years 2 and 3 were reversed. Perhaps then we would be more accepting of a young team that is simply over-matched most nights coming off a year that represented a team making consistent progress. Instead, year 3 was quire alarming in the drop-off from year 2. Now year 4 looks like we hit the "reset" button. I'm certain this is not what we had in mind after building state-of-the-art facilities a few years back.

The program needs stability and continuity, so flushing even a struggling coach in his 4th year is not prudent. A lot of this is on Miles, himself. His program has seen a lot of roster shuffling, with transfers in and out, that you can't assume all of the young players seeing minutes this year will be back next year. But no doubt, he needs to get his act together - figure out how to get players in here that can complete in this league - and get this team to the NCAA tournament pretty quickly, or it's back to the mid-majors for him.

up after this past weekend. Hopefully the team doesn't give up.

Ooooh, I was close. Laughing

He wasn't saying for him to be fired.

Should not even be discussed. People need to realize Nebraska is one of the worst Power 5 college basketball jobs in the country when it comes to winning, getting to the tournament, sustained on the court support and fan support.

We have a new arena and a new practice facility but that's it. Miles needs to change a few things, but a big missing piece is Craig Smith. He hasn't been able to replace him.

Maybe not now. But two years from now? Yes, he's fair game. The expectation of at the very least having a solid team/program is not outlandish. Losing 11 conference games in a row and counting is not going to cut it for a man whose getting paid 2 million a year.

haven't watched basketball since the 85 celtics, who's this tim miles you speaketh of?

In year 4, his conference record is 21-35. Compare that to Nee's last 4 years which were all B12 seasons which were 31-33. IMO this is a better basketball conference top to bottom, than the B12 was those years.

I'm not calling for Miles to be fired, but the results need to change. I believe just the addition of one player (maybe it could be the A&M transfer) could make.a huge difference.

I agree in two years if nothing has changed these discussions can happen. But not now.

I know it's the wrong thread but why isn't Riley given the same slack as Miles. Riley didn't even get bran new facilities build like Miles. Although we already have great ones.not a big deal and not everyone feels this way. But I think all coaches deserve some time to make it right. That's all.

I agree. Every coach deserves three years unless it's a massive train wreck (aka Turner Gill at KU, they never should have hired him.)

Because the trophy cases for our football and basketball programs are miles apart. Our football program is a "blue-blood", while our basketball program is the basketball equivalent of Iowa State Football (they also have brand-new facilities). Miles also didn't inherit a program that had won 70% of its games over the last 7 years - he inherited a 12-18 team that finished 11th out of 12 in the Big Ten, and had us in the Big Dance two years later.

I'm not saying Miles is the answer, but Barry and Doc both got 6 years. Miles deserves just as much time, maybe even a little more because of that run in 2014. I also believe that Riley deserves a few more years, as long as he does not have another losing season. Multiple losing seasons at a blue-blood program should be unacceptable, unless you are on probation or something.

Bottom line, if you look at "blue-blood" programs - they are almost always turned around in the first couple of years. It's rare for a coach to come into a program like this, suck for the first few years, and then later win championships. If you look at Stoops, Saban, Urban, Carroll, Brian Kelly, etc. - they all made their programs relevant again within 2-3 years.

Spot on Harry.

Well I agree that this team has disappointed me a bit as well. I think we need to see how the year progresses, before we start saying he needs to be fired. If he goes 2-14 in the league or worse you may get your wish.

There are pros and cons with Miles

Pros

  • Great with the media and fans (A trait both Doc and Collier were both good at)
  • Recruiting (Best since Nee)
  • Hiring of assistants (Some could argue with me here, but he did hire Craig Smith before he left us. Also Kenya Hunter is no slouch.)
  • Promoting the Nebraska Name
Cons

  • End game coaching. Turns to hero ball when he is in a pinch
  • Does not put his players in a position to win games
  • Jim Molinari is turning out to be a bad hire
  • He is Greg McDermott's bitch
  • Plays upperclassmen over the best players
  • Player development seems to be lacking
Now after saying those Pros and Cons, here is the deal. Right now the Cons are in the lead, and could be leading us down the wrong path.

Losses that should not be losses Samford, Miami, and Northwestern
Losses that on paper should not of been losses Samford and Creighton <- see con number 4

We sit at 8-7 we should be 11-4. Fact is we are not, and that ties into Miles end game coaching. He has been starting the press too late in games when they are down see indiana and Creighton games.

I like Shavon, but he is not what he thinks he is. Miles need to stop him from taking 5 shots in a row unless he is hot. He shot 5 in a row against Indiana late and went 0-5. I get it he makes things happen, but he is also very easy to defend. Especially when the other team know he isn't passing.

The first half against Indiana we looked great. More players were involved, and we were doing some good things out there. Then in crunch time we go away from it. McVeigh was the hot hand "NOT SHIELDS" get the freaking hot hand the ball. Miles has what I call "Experience Blinders" on at end game. Also want to point out Yogi Ferrell was ridiculous in that game. Indiana would have beat anyone the way he was shooting!

Miles has got his faults, but I'm going to give him at least on more year. I want to see what this team is like Shields less. As good as he is I really feel he hurts us end game. I felt the same way about Petteway

EDIT: And I took the bait... jerk!

Turner did a great job at Buffalo and wasn't givin time at KU (fired before he finished his 2nd season...). On paper, yes, it looks like he did a poor job at KU (but outside of Mangino, who hasn't??). At least they won A game with Turner...they went completely O-fer this yr...

Back to topic, Miles will get more time simply b/c the expectations are none for NU Hoops-which most people were hoping would change with his hire.

My biggest issue with this current team is:
1. Defense

My biggest possitive is at least they play like a team. They need better and more consistent play from their big's down low, have some good younger players, and need to do better at exploring other teams weaknesses with the best attributes we have. They're not going dancing but they need to show improvement or the wheels are going to start shaking pretty good for Tim Miles...

GBR
