Tim Duncan Retires

My third favorite player of all time. My list is David Robinson, Jordan, Tim Duncan.
I love players that are team players, win, and go about their business without having to be on the front page every day. Yes, I know Jordan doesn't fit that model but dang he's the best ever.

Tim Duncan:

1. Kept his mouth shut
2. Was fundamentally as sound as it gets
3. Played as hard on defense as offense
4. Put team before himself
5. Took less $$ to help build the team
6. Kept his nose clean off the court
7. Coachable

And I'm sure I'm missing others. He was/is the epitome of the word "professional." Truly a dying breed.

My favorite player of all time.....Fundamental basketball in the NBA died today.

Thank you for 19 years of high level basketball.

First ballot HOF'er and did it the right way. The NBA feels so empty without Kobe, Shaq, and now Duncan. All of my childhood faves are now gone.

Best PF of all time. I have always appreciated the way he conducted himself. This retirement is the exact opposite of Kobe. Just quietly riding off into the sunset.

He was better than both....he played PF from 99 to 2010....won 4 titles in that time.
Still say Malone was better. And I liked Charles more. For a 6'6" PF the round mound of rebound was damn good. And neither had an Admiral to help them get 4 titles.

The admiral was only with the Spurs for 2 championships. Neither of the others won a championship, and I could get into other matters.
I dont care about Malone personally. From what I remember he is about as smart as a rock and a bit of a wackadoo. Im just saying he was a monster of a PF.

Everybody nowadays is the greatest ever. It really gets old. Anyone remember just a short time ago when ESPN and God and everybody all of a sudden anointed Dirk as a top 10 player all-time after he won a title?

It was Duncan who got the Admiral 2 titles.

I was a DR fan, but I'm pretty sure he thanks his lucky stars that he got injured Duncan's senior year, or he'd be in the same group as Stockton, Malone, Barkley, Ewing, Wilkins, etc, etc, great players to never get a ring.

And, no, Malone was not better, and Barkley is 6 41/2.

Is Tim Duncan really that much better on the court then Kevin McHale? Just throwing it out there. That guy was great too.

Greatest low post moves, maybe ever. Underrated defender IMHO. 6' 11" but with a wingspan of a someone much taller. He is the one guy who I think you can make an argument for, that when he was at his best, he was up there with the all time great PF's.

What potentially holds him back is that he played on what some call the greatest front line in NBA history in Bird & Parish. Also, if Boston hadn't lost 2 out of 3 in the NBA finals vs the Lakers in the 80s, he might get the nod (again IMHO). Also, it doesn't help him (in some people's eyes) that 2 of their 3 rings came against the Rockets, and in 1981, the Rockets had a losing record in the regular season. Finally, he just doesn't have the career stats to compare to Duncan.

Had the Celtics played and beaten the Lakers in the finals in 1981 and 1986 instead of Houston, and had a 3-2 head to head edge on them in 1980s finals vs 1-2, and had, KM been able to play longer, I think people would remember KM more, and he wouldn't be so much in Bird's shadow.

Barkely I believe always said KM was the toughest guy for him to ever have to play against.

6'4.5"? Makes Barkley all the more impressive to me. :)
And I think there are 36,928 reasons the Mailman is better. In an era with tougher defense IMO.

Look, Im not saying Duncan wasnt a great player. Greatest PF of all time? Maybe. Maybe its Karl. Maybe Larry. Hell I think Hakeem was versatile enough to play 4. Even LaBron is versatile enough to play 4. All great players regardless of what position they truly were.

Honestly my favorite? The Worm. Absolute freak athletically. Epitome of hustle defense and rebound. Just a complete nutjob. Lol

I'm not saying Malone and Barkley weren't great. Fair or not, it is still all about the rings (and how many was that player THE man for the team with the rings). The list of players with more than TD is pretty short.

Duncan was the best PF EVER, most if not all NBA scholars agree on that. His stats have him as a top 10 overall. 1 of only 3 players to win a 1,000 regular season games and only one of those with 4 titles and a MVP trophy.

The Spurs had the greatest run in the history of the NBA with Tim.
They have been the winningnest pro franchise while Tim played.

They realistically were 2 unbelievable plays from winning 5 straight NBA championships.

Derek Fisher shot in 2004
Manu's unbelievably stupid foul on Dirk in 2006.

Dirk is a top 15 player though. He is just outside the top 10.

Edit: at worst Dirk is top 20.

Not in order, but in loose groups:
Top 5- MJ, Magic, Bird, Jabar, Wilt

Next five- Kobe, LBJ, Russell, Duncan, Erving

11-20- Hakeem, Shaq, Roberson, West, Dirk, Barkely, Malone, Pippen, Stockton, Iverson/Wade/Ewing/Durant/Nash. It's gets really hazy 17-25.

You didn't need to drag Dirk into this. I'm not saying Top 10, but Top 20 is touchable. Currently ~#6 in scoring and may move past Wilt. Undefendable in his prime. Redefined the position. I don't think he needed to win a title to prove that. However, he pretty much destroyed two of the best (in Wade and James) in the 2011 Finals that were mocking him. Could have won two titles. He never quit in the 2006 Finals loss. It was his teammates (Finley didn't give up either).
