Thursday notebook: Williams back in action
***Head coach Mike Riley said safety Antonio Reed will likely be out for Saturday’s game with a knee injury. Riley said Reed should be ready to return to action next week, but for now NU will go with Kieron and Aaron Williams as the starting safeties and have Joshua Kalu move inside to nickel when using five DBs. That means freshman Lamar Jackson could play a lot vs. Fresno State.
***Riley said Corey Whitaker was “ready to go” for Saturday’s game and would be a backup at both guard and tackle if needed.
***Riley also confirmed that sophomore linebacker Tyrin Ferguson will redshirt this season. Riley said Ferguson approached the coaches about redshirting because he saw the depth ahead of him at Mike linebacker and knew he and the team would be best served if he sat out this season. “He was absolutely right,” Riley said.
***Today marked the return of receivers coach Keith Williams to practice since his arrest a few weeks ago. Riley said there was a noticeable energy with the players, especially the receivers, with Williams back on the field. Riley said Williams addressed both the team and the staff before practice and that it “was well done”.
***Riley said the weekly Sam Foltz captain title for the Fresno State game will be announced following Friday’s practice.
***Riley confirmed that Nebraska will do something special for the first punt of the game on Saturday in honor of Foltz, though he did not go into detail what they would do.
***Riley acknowledged that this was obviously a huge recruiting weekend for the program, and that it would be a bit of a balancing act in giving the numerous high-profile recruits that are in town enough attention and also preparing the team for their first game.
Riley said the team and the game always come first, but no doubt will the staff be working hard on the recruiting front as well.
