Thursday notebook: Huskers hit ground running on Day 1

***Nebraska practiced for right around 90 minutes, and head coach Mike Riley said he could tell right away there was major difference in the overall comfort level compared to the first practice last fall. Riley said he even turned to Billy Devaney and said, “This doesn’t look like a first day practice.”

***All of the players coming back off injuries - especially De’Mornay Pierson-El and Mick Stoltenberg - didn’t show any noticeable signs of being hindered during Thursday’s practice. However, he said tomorrow would be a much better indicator of that after the players have to come back for a second day of practice.

***Riley said Nebraska won’t go full pads practice until the fifth practice of fall camp. Until then, the Huskers will focus on trying to get the bulk of their “installation inventory” in place on both sides of the ball.

***It was hard to sum up how every player handled the first practice without Sam Foltz, but Riley said today’s practice and the team meeting Wednesday night both had great enthusiasm from the team.

***With the issues Nebraska had with soft tissue injuries last fall, Riley said he and the staff have talked a lot about finding ways to be more careful in monitoring players this year.

***The Huskers ran two separate huddles on offense, with Tommy Armstrong and Ryker Fyfe working one group and AJ Bush, Patrick O’Brien and Tanner Lee working the other.

***Pierson-El said he felt really good in his first practice since injuring his knee last Oct. 31 at Purdue. He said he could run at full speed with no issue, and the only hurdle now is just not thinking about his knee and letting loose on the field. Asked how he felt after practice, Pierson-El said: “You see the grin on my face, right?”

***A couple of jersey number notes: Kieron Williams changed his number from 27 to 26, presumably out of respect for Foltz. Also, Alex Davis has switched from 32 to 22.
