Thoughts on the game today

Nailed it. Why people can't understand this boggles my mind
Ummmmm because they're idiots? That said, this was more about TA's problems than anything else. He couldn't sustain drives with his legs, missed wide open guys and made some bad choices in the passing game. To whom much is given much will be expected and his hammie is no excuse for how poorly he played today. Our D didn't help but IF we had sustained some drives and held the ball early, this could have been a different game.

The only unit that has no depth is the OL because Cavanaugh doesn't give reps to backups in practice
Ummm QB and DE aren't exactly deep and they were both bad tonight. The O line actually played pretty well tonight. TA had all day to throw.

This is what happens to a team with zero depth at the end of a season who is banged up

Game in a nutshell

1. Iowa offense won point of attack against Husker defense and it wasn't even close.

2. Iowa defense extremely out coached Nebraska offense. Iowa philosophy was to dare TA to beat them by picking them apart by throwing the ball. He couldn't. There was a reason he had a long time in the pocket today and it was because of Iowa's defensive philosophy in stopping the Nebraska offense (keep him contained in the pocket and let him try to make throws).

You forgot QB and defensive line. But those are three pretty unimportant position groups right?

Completely agree. But it's goes back to depth and change in philosophy. We don't have a qb on this roster capable of running the offense that langs is comfortable calling. The two kids on the bench might be there next year, but POB wasn't ready this year. Our o line was a problem all year. And the d line was a problem waiting to be exploited the whole season. You can't beat good teams with no quality depth and mediocre line play. Doesn't work. And no amount of coaching can fix that.

Two years ago were you happy with TA, Johnny Stanton, Zach Darlington, Ryker Fyfe, and AJ Bush? There are a lot of misses in CFB. Aren't Riley and Langsdorf supposed to be great developers of QBs?

Nope...6th months ago we were told how much better this team would be WITHOUT the DL guys that left.

Look...this was simple...one team was tough and the other team was NU

I agree, it's not time to throw the baby out with the bath water. I just like to watch this video every time one of my teams gets smoked, and thought I would share.

When the Blackshirts needed a stop, they gave up a fourth down completion to Noah ****ing Fant.

There were plenty of people who understood this from the get go. .... They were just screamed down by the TrueRedHuskerRoverFans of the world
And how many of those posters are there? 9-3 with losses to 2 top ten teams and people are ready to fire the entire staff.

Think about it, people... today was bad. We weren't ready, we were outcoached, we lacked depth, fill in the blank. But 9-3 with two of those losses to top ten teams... and take a look at recruiting right now. 2 teams ahead of us according to stars in the B1G. Ohio State and Michigan. Let the coaches turn this thing around.

9-3... CAN THEIR ASSES! right...

Easily, The worst game of the year. The coaching staff has had two years to teach TA to pass to the open guy for 5-10 yards versus to heave it a mile down field with no hope. His receivers may have not been on the same page as him but none of those long bombs had a chance in hell of connecting. I don't think Ryker was probably an option with his broken wrist. Who is our speed guy on offense that scares the other team's defense?

A few plays previous to Iowa converting a 4th and long in the 4th quarter the Huskers sent 5 guys at Iowa's quarterback and threw him for a loss. On the converted 4th down play no pressure. Why? Our linebackers are not fast and they overran plays too often today. The DB's didn't cover or tackle well. Let's don't even bring up the punter. This was an embarrassing loss.

Took the dogs for a walk after the game. My Husky (No Cougars) neighbors couldn't wait to stick their heads out their front doors to ask, "What happened to the Huskers?"

Update Sat. 11/26 My North Dakota neighbor walked by our house while I was out front and he promptly informed me North Dakota State was better than the Huskers as ND State beat the Hawkeyes.

Can't argue with this too much Wasker... pretty spot on.

You misunderstood my post. This is a very very flawed team and roster. 9-3 is quite good considering the talent (although there is no excuse for today's performance). The problem is that anytime these flaws were brought up TrueHuskerFans would go ape shit. The number of posters who just were automatically pencilling us in the conf championship game was ridiculous.

Poor QB
Below Avg offensive line even when healthy
Razor thin inexperienced d line with Div II level defensive ends coached by a position coach with little coaching experience with the exception of 2 years at a lower tier DII school

All these shortcomings were present going into the season

9-3 is decent but today puts a big damper on things

The thing is, every team has injury issues. if injuries are that big of an issue, does it not fall on the strength guy? Injuriea are a part of the game and you have to deal with it.

Agree... needed to split my response into 2 posts... I just want to make sure people understand there is one one red rover...

The rest of my post was for the doom and gloomers... not meant for you jlb.

We're talking both injuries and depth tho. Every team has injuries... top teams have depth to cover those injuries... we don't have that yet. I am hopeful that these coaches seem to have a plan to rectify that, but I guess we will see...

Tim, I am not ready to fire the staff. We don't want to get where Texas is, but when you were crucifying me last year for my comments this is exactly what I was warning Husker fans about. Games like this are exactly the type of game that exasperated the Oregon State fans. I thought Riley and his staff had made great strides forward this year. Today feels like a step backwards. Ohio State is a Top 4 team. This was Iowa. The Huskers had no business playing a game like this.

Pretty sad to hear we have "below avg. OL, inexperienced D2 DE's" at Nebraska-- makes me mad at 1)Pelini and 2) Riley (for not realizing this and going full throttle toward blue chip/JUCO LINEMAN STAT).

Not true.

Whitaker comes in, does okay for a few series then looks like dog shit the rest of the way. Conrad replaces Knevel and ends up the starter. There's two examples right there. You want a third? Hahn takes over for Foster after his injury then immediately lost his spot when Foster was cleared to play.

There's three back-ups that have played; 2 of them didn't last long when the starter [better player] returned from their injury.

QB, zero depth. WR, zero depth. DE, zero depth. LB, zero depth. DB, zero depth can be argued. There's a reason Aaron Williams kept playing the slot, after he's been burned multiple times, as we don't have anyone else. Part of that's on the coaches for not allowing Lamar to progress week to week like a true freshmen with his talent can.

This entire team is lacking depth. Part of its on the coaches though. We need difference makers, that's for sure. 2017 will be better with depth at QB, DE, OL, DB & who knows if Williams will get finish out his group or strike out. If he does, add WR to the improved depth category.

The problem will be, it's inexperienced depth.

Like I said in the other thread, hard to disagree...

My big thing last year has always been to give them time. They will get difference makers in at key positions. But until we get linemen on both sides of the ball and the depth behind them, we will always wonder if we can win this game or that game. Lots of close games this year that shouldn't have been. Coaching? Probably... talent? Sure... depth? Yep... we have a lot of work to do and it remains to be seen if Riley is the guy.

That's one I don't get. His shirt was burned. Give him game reps to get better.

But yeah spot on about our lack of depth at certain positions. Downright scary.

An Iowa team that clearly wanted it more and man handled the huskers up front all day.. don't kid yourself we hawk fans are not happy about our season either but it's pretty clear nebby isn't near as good as you thought.

@24fan, More Nebraska fans were predicting under for 8 wins than over this year... which means we are better than we thought.

But yeah, most didn't think we were beneath Iowa...
