First of all, we are 2-0 heading into the Oregon game and that is great. Been some frustrating play at times, penalties still an issue, and mental mistakes there -like giving up the first half TD on 4th and 17, after not covering punt well. But I bet the players feel pretty decent by the final score, and when you look at the Georgia score, Clemson, Oklahoma State lose etc. helps put this game into perspective. A lot of teams had close games that no one saw coming and the Okie State loss and how it happened might be worse than the BYU game last year.
I saw a thread on Ross Dzuris, and don't get the negative comments made about him--he seems to be way over-performing what anyone probably ever expected from him, seems to work his butt off, and is fundamentally sound--and yeah, he will probably have problems setting the edge against Oregon, but that is true of most teams that play them and the typical ends at a power 5 team would not be a walk-on. So not sure how you fault him--seems liked he worked hard in the off-season, got better than he was-( which is all you can ask) and is doing fine. I tend to have more problems with guys that have natural ability/size and don't utilize all that they could. Maybe an example of that would be the discussion on Jalin Barnet, who had a golden opportunity it seems this year and hasn't potentially put in the time on conditioning, diet etc.--I say potentially Jalin and I am not involved with the team, so I really have no idea-but he was a highly ranked kid. ( I realize he has quite a few years remaining to play and could start at some point)
The linebackers could have a tough game against Oregon's speed, but again, seems they all took the summer conditioning seriously and shed excess pounds. Speed and quickness is something you can improve slightly, but maybe harder to have significant gains. If you are not real flexible in the hips, not sure you can improve that a ton--or if you gained some weight for the long Big Ten physical season, you don't just drop it for this game and then gain it back next week.
Not sure how many of you have tried to tackle a really elusive, quick, rb or receiver like we will see from Oregon in space, but that is not an easy thing to do--watch that highlight of Ameer's first touchdown in the NFL and what he did to the safety in space, or what he did to so many defenders during his time with the Huskers--easy to say from the stands--you need to breakdown, you need to wrap-up, or you can't let him get to the edge/corner, but sometimes people are just better than you--and you hope you don't get exposed very often![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
I bought my tickets for the game next week, and I know I will be angry/frustrated at times by stupid plays/penalties, as well as throws by Tommy that will make my head hurt, but I also know he will compete and want him to play well. I told my brother we will see some quick explosive TD's from Oregon and have to expect that going in--heck we may give up 400+ yes ( just hopefully not in the first half along
, but I also think we will be able to move the ball and score points. We will get ahead and then do something stupid to let them back in, then Oregon will probably at some point have a decent lead, and then we will fight back and go back ahead--and hopefully at the end of it, we will be 3-0. So a lot of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, it will be a great game day experience with my 2 of my 3 boys, my brother and his son ( first game in Memorial stadium for my nephew) , the recruits will love it, and the coaches are going to take this team another step forward. If we happen to fall short, I will still love the team, appreciate all the hard work these coaches do on the field and recruiting, and realize it is just a game--I think the tribute to Sam last week showed us that--
