  • 5 conference champs plus highest ranked G5 conference champion.
  • Top two seeds get bye.
  • 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5 on third Saturday of December.
  • Semi-finals New Years Day.
  • Championship Game one week later.
No more “gaming the system” since only one school per conference gets in. Being undefeated matters (because it will likely get you a bye in the first round of the playoffs). Regular season matters because you have to win your conference to get in. All Division 1 teams have a chance because Group of 5 is guaranteed a slot.

Based on the final Playoff Committee Rankings in 2017, here would have been the seedings and first round games:

1. Clemson (bye)
2. Oklahoma (bye)
3. Georgia vs 6. Central Florida
4. Ohio State vs. 5. USC
