I posed this in another thread last night but think it deserves its own thread...

For a lot of people, this class is good but not great. I guess my question is this… Is this class good enough to start the turnaround? I see contributors in this class that, coupled with even better classes following this class, can bring us back. This class won't do it all by itself. But there are some pretty strong pieces in this class that will be counted on down the road.

What do others think?

I think that's a fair way to judge the class. It won't win titles by itself. But it is definitely good enough to help win titles in the future. Which is why top 15 classes should be the standard going forward. I've heard a bunch of time that next year is when the recruiting is supposed to really pick up. I hope this is correct. I also hope Mike Riley can develop players at a decent level, because that would really help out this class as well.

I definitely think there are some big time pieces that we are getting. I think our OL is starting to get some hosses. I think Barnett, Gates, and some of the new guys are going to be studs. We now just need to build depth. We are going to have probably one of the best WR groups we've had here, and our secondary is poised to be pretty good soon. I think Tre Bryant is going to be special. My prediction for this year is that Wilbon breaks out, but Tre Bryant in coming years is going to be a boss.

I think it is a very good start. With a 6-7 season and a top 25 finish in recruiting, I am fairly happy. I wish we could have brought in a DT, but the coaches seemed ok with not going after anyone after missing on a couple. That said, the bar needs to be raised from here on out. It is a proven fact that you need top level classes if you want to win championships. At NU, I think that due to some disadvantages our staff needs to be good at recruiting and development. I heard some quotes by the staff that they are going to make some changes and get out of the gate a little sooner this year. At least they acknowledge mistakes and are trying to change them. Relationships have been built. It's time to capitalize on them. Their biggest hurdle right now is trying to even out some classes. This next year we have 22 seniors, but the following year only 13. So, unless there is some attrition, the 2018 class could be small. We have to get away from that.

IF we signed 22 4 and 5 star athletes every year, how many of them could be on the field at any one time? How many would transfer because eventually they would realize they would never get on the field? The key is to get 7-10 guys out of the 22 you recruit every year that end up playing at a high level. Your odds are better of that with that top 10 class but that doesn't mean you can't do it with a top 25 class. IMO we filled some huge roster holes and maybe most importantly, we got guys on both sides of the ball that look like difference makers. At QB especially so.

are we patient enough to wait 2-3 years to start the turnaround? The effects of this class won't been seen for another 2-3 years. We could have signed the #1 class in the nation and it would have very little impact on next year. I hope there are enough wins in the next few years to bridge the time it will take to see if Riley and company truly are an upgrade.

Yes, at least I am, especially if I see improvement along the way. Plus, it isn't like we can vote on this, we don't have any other choice but to wait. 25th ranked class this year, and hopefully15ish class next year, along with more than 6 wins...Yeah, I can wait for that.

If we get top 15 classes with a few top tens from here in out then I'm OK with this year. It looks like we have a few good contributors here.

Will I be excited with "more than six wins"? Not a chance unless more than six means at least ten.

I like the class. I was absolutely not expecting a top 25 showing after the year we had. NU had a down year, and the B1G West isn't the sexiest division to come play in. I may sound crazy, but if we can establish some kind of running game, I think we can make a run at the West this year.

We will make a run at the west because once again it is terrible. Our schedule isn't terribly daunting again either. I think there is only probably 1 game we are chaulking up as a loss and that is Ohio State. I guess we will see how we come out of the gate, but if we play like we were at the end of the season, and Tommy gets over turning it over, we might be ok. A few kinks to work out, but it shouldn't be all that hard to be in the conversation in at least the west.
