Small town, Eastern Nebraska
I was just curious about how some of our near misses are doing at their respective schools.
I know have the responses to this will be "who?" or "who cares?" but I was curious and thought others might be too...

Darnay Holmes, DB, UCLA true freshman
Fighting for a starting corerback spot with the Bruins.
Already receiving plenty of hype and backing it up in practice reports, Darnay Holmes might just be the defensive back answer to outstanding DE freshman Jaelan Phillips. He’s quick enough to slide into the slot but has the physical nature to stick on the outside. His versatility will allow him to see the field early and often.
Side note: His "top quote" on his 247 profile page is about Gebbia and KJJ going to Nebraska.

Jamire Calvin, WR, Washington State true freshman
Looks like he's the talk of preseason camp and more than likely to play this year.
Link: The reputation of Jamire Calvin’s fall camp at Washington State has spread almost as rapidly as the vicious wildfires currently smoking out the Pacific Northwest.
And just like those nasty blazes, the true freshman wide receiver has been hard to contain. Now he’s one of the top inside options for an offense designed to give each of its receivers ample opportunity to touch the football.

Joseph Lewis, WR, USC true freshman
Looks like he's not standing out yet, and they are looking for someone to stand out. You'll notice a few other names we were in on in this report:
Link: With no wide receivers emerging as stars during training camp, it might make sense for defenses to force USC to prove it can throw deep.
Who would be a deep threat today? USC coach Clay Helton named Jones along with freshmen Tyler Vaughns and Josh Imatorbhebhe as deep threats this week. But none of these receivers are consistently making big plays. That might sound critical but with so much practice time in August, it seems logical a receiver might emerge. Helton did not mention true freshman Joseph Lewis, who looks capable of being a deep threat. Another true freshman, Randal Grimes, is intriguing.

Also this: The wide receivers were not exactly tearing it up either. If you want a hidden concern going into the season, ask yourself what receiver is going to be a deep threat?
There is a huge opening right now for either true freshman – Joseph Lewis or Randal Grimes – to become a key receiver. Lewis had several nice catches Saturday.
“Obviously, we’ve got a lot of work to do,” USC coach Clay Helton said Saturday.

Foster Sarrell, OT, Stanford true freshman
Didn't find anything mentioning him since fall practice has started. A fall camp preview wondered if he'd see the field, provide depth or perhaps play in a jumbo package. It also mentioned that they had a senior and a junior that were "entrenched" as starters at tackle, one of whom was named a captain this week.
Note: Stanford opens the season against Rice in a game in Sydney, Australia.

Tyler Shelvin, DT, LSU, high school graduate
As of Monday, had not enrolled at LSU yet. Still waiting on NCAA clearinghouse. Possible academic casualty.

Robert Porcher, DE, Virginia Tech true freshman
VaTech really likes their veteran starting defensive ends. The one-time Husker commit was one of four true freshman D-ends this article said "remained to be seen" if they could be viable backups. I'd guess redshirt here.
Also: The Hokies signed a strong class of defensive ends last winter, although only Zion Debose or Robert Porcher might be physically ready to play right away (and Porcher may slide inside anyway).

Andrew Van Ginkle, DE/OLB Wisconsin, JUCO transfer junior (Iowa Western)
I don't know how much Nebraska was ever in it with him, and I recall some on RSS wondering why we weren't going after him harder. Looks like he's playing the OLB in Wisconsin's 3-4, a CAT linebacker, if you will. Looks like he's on the second team for now.
Link: Redshirt junior Andrew Van Ginkel has received reps with the No. 2 defense and appears to be in a spot to rotate in when needed. He’s got the length at 6’4, 234 pounds, and flashed here and there in both spring and fall camps.

CJ Verdell, RB, Oregon true freshman
Looks like a redshirt candidate, one of three true freshman RBs.
Link: One position where Oregon will have an option to redshirt is at running back where true freshmen Felix, CJ Verdell and Cyrus Habibi-Likio are all likely behind Royce Freeman, Tony Brooks-James and Kani Benoit on the depth chart.

Deommodore Lenior, CB, Oregon true freshman
Mister do-everything is listed here among the freshman "pushing the veterans." Taggart says right now he has "not intention of redshirting anyone" and that the best players will play.
Link: Army All-American Deommodore Lenoir and three-star safety Nick Pickett have also quickly found their way into the rotation in Oregon's two-deep in the secondary. Receivers Jaylon Redd was singled out by Willie Taggart last week as a player who's been very impressive and should also play this year.

Terry Wilson, QB, Oregon, redshirt freshman
The former 2016 Husker decommit has transffered to Garden City CC in Kansas after one year at Oregon.

Desmond Fitzpatrick, WR, Louisville, redshirt freshman
Didn't find anything on the one-time Husker silent commit, but this blurb was after he impressed in the Cardinal spring game:
Redshirt freshman Dez Fitzpatrick was Jackson's favorite target, establishing himself as a potential 2017 breakout player. He caught nine passes for 176 yards and two TDs, including a weaving, 80-yard catch-and-run in the third quarter that made it 42-7.

Jared Bubak, TE, Arizona State, redshirt freshman
The one-time in-state Husker commit redshirted last year and is one of eight tight ends on the roster for the Devils now, but looks like he has a shot to play. Didn't find anything from this fall (it's almost as if some teams don't have two dozen reporters doing stories on every practice), but this from the spring:
Link: Although ASU has eight tight ends currently on the roster — with junior Jay Jay Wilson redshirt sophomore Tommy Hudson and redshirt freshman Jared Bubak as the only likely players to see live game action this season
