The official that spotted that 2nd and short needs to be fired.

He’s just following the How to Remain a Big Ten Ref for Life instruction manual.
Its a REALLY good part time gig for guys who are too lazy to try to coach. I have a friend who was a high school basketball coach who quit that so he could become a college official. He sells insurance during the week and refs FCS games on the weekends hoping to eventually get P5 jobs. He was a GREAT basketball coach but just didn't want to work that hard.

Honestly, I think we probably were coming out with 3 points at most anyway so probably didn't make a huge difference in the outcome, but it massively changed how we can approach that drive. And there's absolutely no excuse.
And the upstairs ref who saw it happen and didn’t buzz downstairs for a review. It’s mind numbing that not one person spoke up and said, “wait a minute, that spot is off by 2-3 yards”.

Is he really bad at officiating? If so I’m certain the Big 10 would want him

Why didn’t Rhule challenge that? He wouldn’t have lost a timeout. But yet he burns one of our precious timeouts late in the 4th during a 8 minute injury timeout. We have to get better - head coaching included.

do all replays have to originate from upstairs inside of 2 minutes? Its tough to make that call from the sideline at that spot in the field. It would have had to come from one of his staff upstairs.

It’s hilarious watching the official come running in from the side, a half-yard short of the line to gain. He knew where he was going to spot the ball before it was even snapped.

Right. But doesn’t he communicate with his staff upstairs?

There's not much time. It would have taken somebody upstairs to be damned sure and even then I'm not sure he can challenge inside of 2 minutes. He also might have been relying on the video ref to buzz down. Face it. We weren't going to get any calls from the review booth even if we had called down. Look at that play at the half yard line where they spotted it at the 2. THAT's close enough that the video booth should have buzzed down. They had the word. OSU has to win this game.
