The first leak of the 2024 Big Ten schedule

WTF Iowa has to play 2 maybe 3 good teams?

Either we don’t have USC - Michigan - Penn State or OSU on the 2024 schedule or it is not considered noteworthy that we are matched up against any of those programs

Well they didn't list Michigan vs. Ohio State either and that's always the biggest TV draw in the country so you know it's scheduled. What was leaked, if it actually is a leak, was just a small sample.

Everyone who isn’t an actual idiot knows Michigan and OSU will be on the schedule - just like USC v UCLA.

But for those idiots - to prove how much of an insider I am - I am hearing from my sources that Mich will be playing OSU and USC will be playing UCLA. Take it to the bank - I am that dialed in

If you have a The Athletic subscription, you can read the whole article here.

Some key paragraphs:

The model, as The Athletic previously reported, is more flexible than the formats peer conferences are using. It is called the Flex Protect Plus, and it gives each Big Ten team up to three protected annual opponents and cycles through all of the teams in the rest of the league. Each Big Ten team will play every other team in the league over a two-year span.

“I think the two-year component is the real important point here, because it allows you to not have to lock things in unnecessarily for longer periods of time,” Big Ten chief operating officer Kerry Kenny told The Athletic. “It’s a 3-6-6 maybe with a twist only because those three aren’t staying rigid the entire time.”

The model is designed to prioritize competitive balance, maintain each school’s most important rivalries and set up the conference for success in the new 12-team College Football Playoff era, which also begins in 2024. There are a total of 11 protected rivalry games each season.

Thursday’s announcement officially ends the Big Ten’s divisional era at the conclusion of 2023, with the final season of the East-West divide coming this fall.

The highlights for Nebraska:
  • We have one protected rival - Iowa.
    • Other schools have up to three.
    • Penn State has zero.
  • Schedules will be released in two-year chunks in the future.
    • In those two years, we'll see three teams twice and the other teams once (6 per year).
    • For 2024 and 2025, we'll play Iowa, UCLA and Minnesota twice.
  • Our 2024 schedule seems manageable, but 2025 could be tough.
    • The only true blue blood in 2024 is Penn State.
    • In 2025, we'll face off against Michigan, Ohio State and USC.

I do like the aspect like that each team will play every other team at least once every two years. BUT I also wonder how long this scheduling scheme will stay in place if the PAC implodes and there's more conference realignment.

Penn State schedule is brutal and Iowa didn't do themselves any favors with those protected rivalry games. That 24' schedule is no joke

I want to see Nebraska play the best of the best every week so selfishly wish we could get that 2025 schedule difficulty every year. Looks hellish but damn if it won't be fun seeing Nebraska playing against top programs historically almost every other week during the conference schedule.
agreed. I want to see mich, ohiost, pennst & usc on the schedule every year.

iowa fan already over here, pants loaded with poo and piss, complaining about 2 tough road games 3 seasons from now.

typical

Dam, Iowa is following the SEC model for non-conference scheduling.

Actually, I retract my statement. That’s actually worse than a SEC non-conf schedule.

Look for them to try to replace Iowa State with non-P5 teams.

We got the booby prize for protected rivalries, but it is what it is.

At any rate, the BIG at least gets it from a scheduling standpoint in understanding what butters the bread from the revenue side. Something the B12 never understood during our tenure there.

The Iowa Nebraska border rivalry is the closest thing we have to a long running rivalry in this conference so I’m not particularly upset that’s our one protected game.

I actually feel a little sorry for Iowa. There’s all these exciting teams to play and they have three protected crossovers plus ISU so they will have the lowest amount of scheduling variety.

They don't want exciting games...The NEED the lamest schedule possible to get that magical 8 win season.

the 2025 schedule comes at a good time for Rhule and his evaluation.

I'm more interested to see how the in-fighting develops on the selection for the CCG. That looks bound to be a political event from where I sit.. could even morph into a pay to play model. When you have several teams tie for second place in the conference, how will that be decided? Kick back some money to the conference I presume?

That's the K state model
Yes for sure, only as I remember Snyder and Fry didn’t make excuses for that type of scheduling. It’s hilarious to read Iowa fans posts complaining about SEC scheduling as if Iowa was somehow on par with Alabama. Iowa fans are such dolts.
