Tenn stud QB transferring

He wanted more now he is getting less..

Really enjoying this story.
And I think you are going to see More communication between coaches like Lanning at Oregon calling Heupal and saying Hey FYI your Qb Wr LB etc.. is shopping around.

I like how Tennessee handled this situation. I also like the SEC rule of not being able to transfer to another SEC school. Going forward, I hope the B1G implements the same rule AND I hope the B1G and SEC come to an agreement that you can't transfer immediately to either conference if you decide to enter the transfer portal.
Obviously, there are many rules that need to be in place, but these two rules will make these kids think twice about entering the portal.

First I agree on how Tennessee handled it . Second the SEC transfer rule only applies to the spring ( April) portal. You can transfer in conference in the winter portal. In the 3rd it’s ridiculous to think they (SEC and Big ) would agree to this .

One of the many reasons people are leaving CA.

Still a shit ton of money, but yeah, he fvcked up. I wonder if he's one of those people who could or will blow anything you give him anyway, no matter how much it is....we all know people who can spend 125% of what they make no matter what that number is, and if his futire decision making process doesn't improve....

...its also important to remember he's just a kid and who didn't make dumbass decisions at that age?

I feel bad for the kid. I had smart parents I could lean on when I was that age. This guy has a ton of talent, but his support system blew it. Assuming he goes into the draft, GMs and coaches will remember how this went down and it will negatively impact him once again.

If he balls out it won't matter, he'll go plenty high in the draft. Cam Ward quit on his team at halftime, gonna be the #1 pick. Nobody will care.

As soon as Tennessee loses a game, there will be a not small portion of their fanbase lamenting that they should’ve paid him.

I’m sure they could.

It’s how he did it. The hold out is bullshit.
I get what you are saying but many many qbs have simply entered the transfer portal after colluding with other teams illegally and coming away with more money. Nico simply wanted to negotiate with his current team because he realized he was going to be underpaid. I can't imagine being 20, and leaving 2 million on the table. It was certainly a gamble...win and he gets at least 2 million more, lose and he loses a few thousand and goes to another team. How many on this board would do the same?

1. HE HELD HIMSELF OUT OF PRACTICE AND CUT OFF CONTACT WITH COACHES.
(1st ever in CFB)

If you allow a player to do that and get what he wants you’ll lose control of your team. If one player does it successfully others will fallow. Completely unmanageable.

2. He didn’t just “enter the portal” He did it after Tennessee forced him to by kicking him off the team. Because he held out of practice and cut off contact with coaches.

3. Other top QBs do not “collude” and/or negotiate and transfer in the spring portal. Every team has a QB they like or are leaning towards after spring ball. The kid has been informed the he is the starter or likely the starter. 2nd and 3rd string QBs transfer after spring. Not starters already making 2.4 million a year. Those guys transfer in the winter. Not to mention the SEC rule about not transferring to another SEC school. Spring portal is the WORST possible time for him to pull this stunt.

4. HE WAS NOT IN ANYWAY “UNDERPAID”. 🤣 That’s just fvcking ridiculous. If anything he’s vastly overpaid as the 10th best QB in the SEC.

5. He didn’t have to do any of this crap if he wanted more money. Hey may not have gotten 4 million, but he could’ve gotten more without pulling this stunt.

Can I make it easier for you to understand? Nico is not a victim, and Tennessee did not mistreat him or underpay him. Nico and his dad did this to themselves. And as insanely stupid as this whole thing was, he still is gonna make $900k after taxes. This kid is not a victim and is extremely privileged to be able to fvck up so colossally and still come out making a high 6 figure salary.

You wouldn't risk a few thousands for a chance at 2 million when you were 20...keep in mind that you are the starting qb for one of the top power 4 programs in the country, and former #1 recruit in the nation. He is a unicorn, whether he ends up great or not everything is pointing to him deserving fair market value.

Fair market value was what he was making - maybe he was slightly above because the market has spoken and he got less.

I'm not understanding how they can be upset about it, though.

"Our team is so bad that we can't have good players"

what sorta logic is that?
It is my understanding that UCLA doesn't have a whole lot of NIL. So does it really make sense to spend it "all" on one guy that may not even be able to help you win a significant amount of games. Especially spending it on a guy who could be a one and done for you and has a a history of renegotiating each transfer portal period. It is like paying Matthew Stafford a ton of money to be the Titans QB, will they win one or two more games, maybe, but they still don't make the playoffs.

A few thousand, try hundreds of thousands. And Making over 2 million a year being the 10th best Qb in a 16 team conference I would say that would be considered Over market value.

Im genuinely curious as to what 9 QBs are better than Nico in the conference? Jaxon Dart, Lagaway (potentially), Ewers. He had a good first season. In spite of the hate fest which he may deserve, he was one of the better QBs in the conference, played a relatively tough schedule, and made it to the playoffs with some decent first year stats.

Going on stats QBR . I would agree it’s misleading and also agree he probably isn’t at that level. My point against the OP was that I think 2.5 is a pretty good value going by where he stacks up number wise against the rest f the SEC QBs . He thought just because Nico was a former 1 recruit he deserves more NIL based on the that alone. That’s why I came up with the middle of the pack QB number and the market value worth. Hey the kid and his reps misread Tennessee and lost . I personally think he is not going to bust his ass for UCLA. He will just concentrate on getting himself prepared for the NFL . My prediction is by November 8th when N plays them in the Rose bowl he will be opted out for draft prep.

Michigan’s incoming 5* got (reportedly) 4 yrs $16M

That’s the new market, and why he did what he did

Extremely simple & straightforward

If he was a quitter he’d have mailed it in @ohiost after the game was in hand. Instead he was shattering his own helmet fighting for yards.

Whomever told him to go for the $4m because that's what Carson Beck got ended up with egg on their face. However, this is a free market and this will sometimes be rewarded and sometimes it will play out like this and end up hurting his bank account. In sales, this would be known as negotiating with an inflated self leverage. TN apparently wanted no part of paying him this raise and their move diminished his value even further. This all played out perfectly like it should have. And now UCLA gets a good QB.

I say all of this knowing nothing on how much value a good QB is worth. But, Beck set a high precedent. In the coming years, as more data is collected, I'm sure this will play out better.

If not a single program in the country agrees nico is worth 4mil a year then how is that the new market? ..cause it looks like his market value was a lot less than what Tennessee was paying him to me.

Timing

Everyone already has a QB on the payroll

If he’d announced his intention after the playoffs he’d have gotten what he was asking, because that’s the market number for a top QB

Pete Thamel gave a good interview on this topic on Weds

I disagree. I think how his team handled it has had an effect on how teams view him just as much as timing if not more. Skipping practices, skipping commited events and meet and greets that was part of his nil package and reaching out to other schools without Tennessee knowledge. Which I’m sure happens but Lanning made this public. There will and are teams that are desperate for a qb.

The thing I find funny is after he announced his UCLA news his family said this was never about money it was the Tennessee offense: if that’s the case he should have entered after the playoffs . Maybe he gets his price maybe he doesn’t. But it’s pretty obvious by the outcome the way he and his reps handled it made him a Red flag type of kid .

That’s BS. He is a quitter. He held out of practice and cut off contact with coaches. He did this to himself. The NIL market is young and changing all the time, just cause one school pays a kid who hasn’t played a down 4 million that doesn’t mean the market has been reset or changed. And the market explained this to Nico’s camp in very blunt terms. This isn’t the NFL, this is willy nilly NIL, there are no current standards to measure what the market is or will be the next day. Nico and his dad misread his value and tried to strong arm Tennessee into making a decision that would hurt Tennessee (and CFB as a whole) in the long run.

You can’t hold out when there are no contracts, few regulations, schools can cut a kid at any time and kids can change schools at anytime. Schools are never going to stand for kids holding out, if one kid holds out and gets his way it will be mass chaos. Kids will be holding out right and left and coache won’t even know when they’re going to do it… Spring? Fall? During the season? After?

There is no defense for what Nico and his dad tried to do. Zero, zilch, nada. Only a desire to be the contrarian and argue the opposite for sake of argument.

I think this is a slightly bad take. Dude went for the money, held out like he saw the pros do, and lost. It happens. He landed and is getting paid again. I don’t think he’s a villain. He’s a 20 year old.

I’m sure his agent sold him and his dad. Ended up being a bad read. Time to move on. It’s a new era. Nico will not be the last to do this. Props to him taking a chance instead of wondering what could have been.

Disagree slightly on the bad take. I think this will make players going forward thinkingthis might not be the right strategy. Dude was making 2.4 on a playoff team wanted 4 and settled for 1.7 on a team that when 5-7 last year .

Well the kid is an idiot then if he thought he could handle his business like the pros who have contracts, salary caps, trade deadlines and regulated free agency. None of that exists in college and kids can jump ship whenever they want and schools can cut your ass whenever they want. If Nico’s camp was so shit all stupid to think the same standards will apply to NIL then they fvcked around and found out.

Even I predicted schools will not tolerate kids holding out, that is a bridge too far and the current rules (or lack thereof) do not supply kids with the leverage to do so.

He may have hated TN. I’m sure we don’t have the full story but rather a gossip column style of what transpired. In fact I know that’s all we have. I hope he does well and that 5-7 UCLA team was actually pretty close to being a decent team but had a very tough schedule, especially to open the year.

Or Nico could be a selfish dipshit who ends up embarrassing himself.

Never met him.
