Talan officially off the team

Um....that was fast. You gotta do a whole bunch wrong in a big hurry to be off the team at the end of your first camp.

Makes me wonder if he was the high-drama linebacker mentioned in that Portland Tribune article that he coaches were afraid might be upset if he was told he was going to redshirt. Also if true, if it might have been easier to handle if that HADN'T become public.

That was where my mind went as well. Maybe he didn't react well to being the one LB who was gonna get a redshirt? But then again maybe not.

This staff is not effing around about cutting guys loose if they don't have their mind right. They need LBs like a junkie needs that next fix and they were still like, "Nope. Not putting up with your BS. Bye, Felicia."

That's the case.

I find it strange he's using his redshirt at Nebraska instead of transferring somewhere and using it there. As it stands now, he'll have to sit out 2 years (2015 at NU, 2016 at new school as a transfer) before he's eligible in 2017. Unless there's a rule allowing him to transfer at semester and immediate eligibility in 2016....

I was thinking the same thing. The only logic I can make from this, is if he transfers to an FCS school or gets a hardship from the NCAA. But as it stands right now, it just doesn't make sense. Oh well, we are dealing with 17/18 year olds who sometimes don't think "big picture".

Sign of a kid who is letting his emotions run the show and not his brain. Shut your mouth and practice hard, and you're an injury or two from being on that field. Maybe you play, maybe you don't. But at least you have a chance if you dig in and keep grinding.

But instead you had to act up, and now you're guaranteed not to play any football at all this year. Not even in practice. And you'll have all that rust and be in bad shape when you show up on somebody else's campus.

Well, that's unfortunate for Talan. Nothing is certain, so I suppose there's a chance (however limited) that he could be back on the team again.

I'm really hoping that we have all of our recruiting done before February. Last minute recruiting leaves a lot of room for things to go wrong. This may have nothing to do with or all to do with it, in terms of expectations on both sides.

We've had players before who left the team for a few days and then came back. Some came back to be very important parts of the team (Eric Crouch) others didn't (Collins Okafor). The door may still be open, hard to tell but if it was entirely Adrian's decision to leave he may be allowed back if he changes his mind after a day or two to reconsider.

Eric Crouch quit the team?

He left the team. Not sure he said the words "I quit", but he went AWOL and went home. Solich had to talk him into returning as I recall.

Talan isn't coming back. I'm surprised he even signed with NU. He will probably leave at semester.

Our 2016 LB's will be great, if we had to lose one, Talan was the one to lose.

I don't think you can charge this off to anything except a failure on the part of the staff.
It's possible. At the beginning of a coaching era however, I am inclined to give the benefit of the doubt. I did the same for Bo and Callahan. If it was a blunder, I trust they learned their lesson about access. They also got rid of a potential problem (or gave him a good kick in the pants, remains to be seen). The fallout, IMO (if this was a mistake), was minimal. I'm fine with coaches making mistakes as long as they show they learn from them. I saw 7 years of the S.O.S. from Bo and co. I can't divine any negative patterns from only an off-season.

**edit: All of the patterns I have seen so far have been overwhelmingly positive. I don't know how this year will go for sure, but I know this: It's gonna be fun cheering for my Huskers!**

Maybe the issue(s) will come out, maybe not. Riley had been recruiting him for awhile to OSU, then flipped him to NU in February. So it isn't like Talan was one of Bo's recruits this staff knew nothing about. Sometimes it is as simple as not being a good fit, it happens.

I hope the kid gets it figured out quickly and can make a return. He's a freshman away from home, probably having a harder time adjusting. He's got plenty of talent though.

I've always thought of freshman College football as a bit like the Military's basic training in certain ways. I know it isn't exactly the same, but in some ways it is. It's a time in a young guys life where a lot needs to happen, where one is forced or driven harder than you have ever been before, and it is there that you find some internal fortitude and find the ability to work through that adversity and come out the other end of the tunnel. It's a tough but also rewarding experience that will pay dividends your entire life.

Just remember one quote (paraphrase) from Riley when talking about part of the difference in recruiting to OSU and NU. "At a program like OSU, we had to sometimes take more risk on a player (character) than we wanted to just to get a guy with enough talent to play at a competitive level. At NU we won't have to reach as much. Sometimes it came back to bite us." IMO, Talan was a bit of a reach but Bo left us in such a quandry for linebackers that Riley was forced to take a guy that he suspected might be high maintenance. As a 19 year old freshman I never made any rash decisions.......Hope it all works out for the kid and he's happy however it ends up.

If your Obama rhetoric gets you through the day God bless you. You do understand the only players solely attributable to Riley et al. on the two deep are the long snappers?

I heard some interview with Urban Meyer (maybe BTN?) on recruiting. IIRC, he claimed that he tells each recruit the same thing along these lines: We're recruiting you to play right now. We don't want you to redshirt, so you need to come in ready to compete. If you're good enough you'll play, if not, you'll redshirt.

I don't know if any promises were made to Talan. I would hope that if our staff is making promises, they intend (meaning 100% probability) on keeping their promises no matter what. The bad thing about this whole deal to me is that we have an incoming recruit that's off the team before the season has started.

Is someone to blame? I don't know and I don't care. This shouldn't be happening. Whatever part of the system that failed needs to be corrected.

Yes that is what Urban said as I remember. Our coaches say something similar and how they see the fit happening - they also tell them they are constantly recruiting the best person available for their position.
