Supreme Court appears to support athlete pay claims against NCAA

Sorry but we currently live in and are moving to an equity of outcome model, not equity of opportunity. Cancel nazis will pull outcome stats and look for any trends they don't like and declare it racist, sexist or whatever.

Only certain people
A 100k dollar scholarship fulll ride is what they are worth.

I'm not here to debate this isn't fair, but it looks like this will happen, therefore, I want to forecast how this helps Nebraska

Let me ask you this...if a bio student was offered...5K a month from a lab in Lincoln, is that okay?
The difference is that the SCHOOL is NOT paying the bio student so it is a private job. For athletes the SCHOOL would be paying them. Apples and oranges situations.

Schools pay students to work campus jobs all the time.

I get your point, but a student getting paid minimum wage for a campus job is a hell of a lot different. I think athletes should be able to use their name for things, but don't think we need to get into basically a minor league model.

I think the best way to look at it is if it was you.

What would you want if it was you in that position. Would you want more opportunity to create income or less?

That is the only way I can look at.

I have a family member who was a prominent player in the program and went to the NFL. He was very satisfied with his time at UNL for all of the shit he received. I've had numerous conversations with him that yes it would be nice to be able to use his name to earn money, but between the gear, the free education, and all of the other perks he received, he was more than satisfied with what he received at NU. For a guy like me who worked my ass off pre-college and during college to make sure my bills were paid, I believe the athletes are more than provided for at NU.

maybe this will help unravel athletic departments from universities.
bad marriages, financially.
all expenditures - salaries (schollies) & facilities, come solely out of athletic revenue or directed donations to ath dept endowments.
i agree with kids making money for their likenesses/value in a revenue/expenditure model, not from student fees.

You worked, that is awesome, so did I. But so did all the kids that worked to get a scholarship.

I just don't get the thought process of "well, they get enough", think about that next time you get offered a raise at work.

No, the schools won't be paying them. There is a chance schools can pay small salaries in addition to free school. Companies outside the schools will be paying them for endorsements ect.

Okay, that is what I thought too.

Now, if anyone is against this, you are just axe grinding.

If a person/company wants to pay a kid out of their own funds...go for it.

Not at high wages. Student athletes for the most part also already are getting paid with their scholarships. But they obviously want a MUCH bigger cut of the pie as essentially profit participants.

I get it, remember they earned those scholarships though, they were not just handed out for no reason. And then I would have to ask, why would you or anyone care if someone can make more or get more for themselves.

Every HS kid, in theory, has the same chance to get an athletic scholarship. It is not like this is closed off to people.

I would have loved a full ride but I sure as hell did not want to work for it. I would have loved a full academic ride but I had no desire to study my ass off and take hard classes and so on. But I could have!

And if I own a company and want to pay some college athlete to "endorse" my crap, that is my business.

THink about how these kids almost put in as much time as professional athletes but get peanuts relative to the revenue they help create. This is a massive opportunity cost.

No...look, I have no idea what your job is but if you got a call tomorrow from a rival company and they offered to double your salary...that is now what you are worth, because someone is willing to pay you that much.
No, that is what you are worth to them. You may actually not be worth that much.

a student on an academic scholarship is allowed to have public sponsorships (gaming, workout supplements on instagram, whatever). some make millions. many make tens of thousands. they make minimal dollars for their school

a student on an athletic scholarship is banned from doing these things today, for zero good reason. they make their school hundreds of millions per year.

Yeah, pretty much. But that is probably because of, cough cough, certain sports.

I would bet that if D1 schools could JUST have football...that they would all at the very least, break even.
Many D1 programs lose money on football.

This is the only way I see NU competing for natty's again unfortunately. The players are getting likeness pay right now so this is the next step.
why is that unfortunate?

I'd kill for us to cheat way more as a means to a championship end in both hoops and football.

I'd take vacated titles all day every day over the pathetic impotence we've dealt with for decades

Amen...

"But but they will take the banner down"

**** off, who cares. Like that prevents the fans from loving the wins.

Free attorney access
And they dont have to maintain a certain GPA.

it's not free, it's in exchange for their services

too many people confuse 'free' with 'in order to enable the most productivity possible from every unit'

the hours spent on their craft is as much or more than you and I spend on ours weekly, and at much higher physical risk

I'm hopeful that this results in some kind of contract system for the players, (coaches have em, why not players). High enough buyout clauses might be enough to stem the tide of the ever-growing portal.

This is so odd. Why should they not be able to work? What a weird hill to die on.

What should they be able to do with their free time?

And they do have to have maintain a certain GPA.

That dudes argument is so odd!

It is like less than 1% of HS players that get a full ride to a D1 school. He acts likes they did not earn it and then acts like once they get to campus they don't do anything.

the only possible explanation for him, or anyone, for that matter, caring one iota what college athletes are able to do to earn money for themselves and their families is that they have an elephant-sized dump in their pants

or they were turned upside down by a bunch of scholarship athletes, shaken until their lunch money fell out of their pockets, then promptly shoved into a locker

I mean, I don't get it. I really don't. I am not smart, I am the first person to admit that but I can't understand why anyone would care if the starting TE at NU or the starting setter (is that a position) on the VB makes extra cash.

If that hot VB player can make some scratch promoting husker bikinis, why would anyone care?

This was the purpose of my original post here, I think this is happening, if so, I think Nebraska competes really good here. Nebraska is the only school in the area with a rabid loyal fan base and zero professional NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL teams. Nebraska has more money than Alabama. Alabama is getting edge now by paying their players but that illegal edge will soon go away. Yes, Alabama and SEC elites are paying their players now. Alabama and Auburn have to share their dirt poor state.

The question becomes what if she starts an only fans or decides to do porn, now that would put the school in a predicament. You boot her your a sexist and if shes a minority your a racist....

But who exactly is paying them? The universities and college or someone outside those institutions?

Im not sure I like this if I’m understanding this right. What’s to stop Phil Knight or any other billionaire business owner alumns from simply buying the very best players every year? Wouldnt they be able to just say hey Justin Fields, you commit to Oregon and I’ll get you in Nike Commercials and whatever else for $20MM. Nebraska and majority of other schools don’t have a sugar daddy alumni-booster like that and would be a massive disadvantage, or am I miss understanding this whole thing?

someone outside. their relationship with the school wouldn't (and shouldn't) change.

we aren't talking about salaries here. it's just the ability to market oneself for profit if they so please.

Yes they do.
Yes they do.

So you’re saying the athletes at Stanford or Notre Dame have the same scores as the average student?

Impressive. My son got a 34 and had a 4.2 gpa and couldn’t get to either school.

I’ll agree that they have the same requirements to stay eligible but they absolutely don’t need the same scores to get in. I’m not saying they should as I understand they bring more to the table.

First you have to stop thinking of requirements as "set in stone", they are not. They are a baseline to weed out some people.

Secondly, if you son was a Mozart type composer with a 2.4 and 14 on his ACT he would get into Stanford.

Colleges can be selective and because of that they can pick and choose who they want. I bet everyone that applies to Stanford is around 34 and around 4.2

Why he did not get into ND with those scores and GPA is a mystery to me. I have sent like 3-4 students in the last two years to that school and one was 4.24 and I have no idea on the ACT but they got a full ride to ND.

The others were not above and I don't think they were 34's, but they got in. You might want to check back with ND because that just sounds like the ****ed up.

And please don't take any of this post as being rude towards your son. Those are amazing scores and I would imagine he would do great at any college. Congrats to you on what he has accomplished.

Minimum requirements are somewhat irrelevant. At more elite schools there are far more qualified applicants than they could ever take. Even if athletes met the normal requirements they'd be cutting in line because there no way in a more or less random distribution all of those specific people would be admitted from the pool.

In the short term this might be good for Nebraska as we have a little money to throw around for people to wear and N on their helmet.

In the mid to long term I think we're basically talking about the dissolution of CFB. Will Nebraska fans be excited about the Lincoln Beef or whatever they are called in the future when this is all just NFL minor league.

Probably not.

your son didn't come with an ROI stapled to his forehead like football players do

all he would do is pay tuition/room/board, with a very small chance he went on to earn enough to donate back a meaningful sum

a 17-year old football player earns the university hundreds of thousands of dollars per year without them having to lift a finger

I don't think the NCAA/universities will ever let go of their multi-billion dollar lotto ticket regardless how much of the 'amateurism' is whittled away
