Strength coach Z. Duval?

According to the article on the front page:

With the addition of Walters and Beckton, all 10 of Frost's top assistants will be with him in Lincoln, as will every key piece of his support and strength and conditioning staff.

I would say that is a yes on Duval.

I assume Duval will be with UCF until the bowl game. He's not needed here until January anyway. I wouldn't be shocked if Boyd was eventually let go.

Was Mark Phillip a flop? What happened there?

I thought it would be his job to help pump up the players during the games.

During the second half of the Iowa game, he was on camera several times just standing there with no emotion whatsoever. He looked as sad and beat as Riley did at the time. Not good.

I have heard some bad things about epleys involvement in the program. Not sure bringing him back was a good thing.

That's the biggest missing cog. In the championship seasons the players held each other accountable. That and don't let the coach out lift you.
That’s the difference with this staff. Accountability is going me much higher with the coaches in and out of the gym

I'm amazed there can be such a thing as a "bad" S&C coach. It's so simple and techniques/exercises can easily be found all over the internet nowadays.

What's not simple is bringing the focus/intensity and being consistent with it for an extended period of time. That really does boil down to the players individually.

This of course is leaving supplementation and diet out of the equation. Not sure what the rules are there, but I'm guessing the "good" S&C coaches are finding a way to "inject" a little more "juice" into their regimens.

I’m pretty sure there’s a little more to it than that

Lot of guys weren't putting in the effort and the last coaching staff wasn't holding those players accountable.

I am always suspicious of these general statements. Who would be "lot of guys" and how many, who were they and how do you know. It could be they were doing everything as required.

I like your posting style Suhreal, but that's false news.

Really? Unfortunate. I thought and was hoping he could right the ship he built

Me too. I had heard rumors of things like Phillip and Boyd didn't work well together for some reason. Something along the lines of Boyd undermining some of the stuff the strength staff was doing. Not sure how much truth there was to it.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but my Inspector Clouseau skills tell me it could possibly be certain TEs that get pushed back so far they meet at the QB or possibly certain lineman that get pushed back and/or pancaked by DBs :p

I have no idea, honestly, but Boyd has been around since the late '60s. I can imagine things might have moved on or there are too many cooks in the kitchen now. Be interesting to see what SF does?

I have to laugh at people who say things like running weight training are easy. Not only do you have to be technically correct and be able to teach it, you have to be inspirational, be able to motivate and lead!

I have said many times that one of the most important attributes missing from the current team is leadership amongst peers. As a weight coach you have to pick the right leader and help those people assert themselves with their peers. In addition the strength coach has to have the trust of a strong majority of the players.

Having spent time in the strength and conditioning field I can confidently say that Zach will be an upgrade over the previous regime. What makes Zach successful is his attention to small details and his drive for rapport and accountability with his athletes. With the discussion on here of there being attrition from athletes with not cut out for the system or bought into the culture; the first proving ground will come in the weight room with Zach come January.

I can lift many bags of chips and beer at the same time. I can do it all day long without breaking a sweat as well.

Is that for sure? I think he was really good. Frost turned around the nutrition at UCF. O’Leary was big plotting nfl guys while frost wanted lean moblile players. I personally hope he stays but it will be a fine hire for NB if he goes.

Every year: Man, weight training is so much better this year. Guys actually wan to come in and get the work done. We hold each other accountable. This is going to pay off in the fourth quarter. Rinse and repeat.

We will hear the same things again going into this coming season, I'm sure of it.

I can't blame the players for these statements because they simply don't know what real hard work is, or what it takes to be successful. I think they will finally see from not only the weight room, but in general a new batch of leadership who holds players accountable and holds them to excellence. Something clearly that was missing in the past. Otherwise, we wouldn't have coaches praising the effort of players who just got destroyed by Oregon, beaten by Northern Illinois, etc. etc.

They should give Carriker a little room in the weight room to live in. Assistant S&C in charge of motivation. :)

Man, I was sitting here going, "I know that guy". Then I read a bit and found out he did Xplosive Edge. I used to talk to his brother Gib almost every day as both my kids did Xplosive Edge while playing soccer in Omaha. God I'm getting old when I can't remember this kind of stuff.

The team will be in a for a surprise if it is like that training. With the pace of this new offense, it becomes more like rugby or soccer for conditioning.

I used to work out with Gibby. Good people. Know their stuff. I was there when they first started Xplosive Edge, so I am pretty sure Duval was there too?
