Most of those people probably weren't paying attention. A L2 self driving system is supposed to be monitored by the driver at all times. Most people who have Autopilot or a similar system say that it relieves a lot of the stress of driving and they would never go back to driving without it.

Autopilot is supposed to be monitored at all times. They determined the driver in this incident wasn't paying attention. If he was paying attention, the accident probably doesn't happen. I agree there is no excuse for this accident, but there are hundreds of videos on YouTube you could find of human drivers causing the same kind of accident. Autonomous vehicles are going to cause accidents and deaths, and we're going to have to accept that because autonomy isn't going away. But it is also proven in the data that L2 semiautonomous driving is already safer than fully manual driving. As the technology improves, it will only become more safe.
