Status of Tommy as the starter

I don't disagree, but curious to see how everything plays out. Sometimes there is a ton of doom and gloom and then the folks look pretty good. It's not always the case, but the coachspeak sometimes clouds things. Hopefully he can make a jump. It's all about decision making because the guy can spin it.

Hopefully he progresses with the new staff and has a great year

As opposed to simply being the tallest midget

I think people should take a few things with a grain of salt:

1. In day 5 of fall camp, the defense is well aware of implementation. This allows them to jump routes and anticipate throws with better certainty.

2. With 4 front line wideouts out, the Nebraska DBs get to cover the bottom of the depth chart after guys like Jamal, Reilly, or Moore aren't taking reps. That creates less seperation and prompts QBs to force throws.

3. All the QBs are being asked to avoid taking off If they can't find an open man. Its my guess Tommy and the others will have free reign to run more in season.

Just a few weeks until the bullets start flying. Was hoping to hear more accolades from the staff at the QB position. This group needs to grow up fast.

I'm 100% with you on this.

I think people should take a few things with a grain of salt:....

I would say that I take the media/coaching talk with a grain of salt. I also take into account that our starting qb completed 53% of his throws last year and that a new offense is being installed this year. We basically have a month to get ready for our first game, and big improvement should come progressing through fall practice. As far as I'm concerned, we're going to have to wait until the 1st game to see how everything is going.

this article's tone isn't much different

"<Langsdorf> He gets disappointed when he tells you three or four times in the meeting room, 'Hey, you have to fix this,' and then you go out and make the same mistake anyway," Armstrong said.

also

"But the Husker defense has issues of its own, most notably a lack of an explosive pass-rusher at the end spots and -- this has been a bit surprising so far in camp -- the secondary allowing receivers to break open on deep routes."

Yeah, not sold on Gangwish or McMullen.

It's also easy to cherry pick observations on articles. I could show you numerous quotes of how are LB'ers are getting their hands on everything. We need a game to assess how it is going to go. Until then it is just going to be the joy of actually discussing FB.

Gangwish and McMullen are not percieved as being explosive pass-rushers by Sipple who heavily relies on what they did last year. Our scheme didn't allow for "explosive pass-rushers" last year as was critically analyzed by Draft guru's in Gregory's lack of sack production. It's a different ball game this year, McMullen and Gangwish are fully capable of being terrors in the back field along with Collins. That and our linebackers, while not as talented, are as big and fast as Gregory was, pash rush should not be a problem this year. Marcus Newby off the corner... yes please!

Lastly we were practicing 3rd and long yesterday, which was pointed out by Mike Welch, which other tweeting media members seemed oblivious to. Also with our top 3 WR's out, and they wonder why Armstrong wasn't tearing apart the defense.

Doesn't sound like he's headed for the bench with this group of backups. In fact, we should all pray to the deity of our choice that he remains healthy as a horse. Also, Wilbon may have that certain something that all really good backs have.

I don't know who the anonymous B1G coach was commenting on NU, but when he described TA as "just a guy" he was right. There is noting special about him. He gets far too much respect for his running ability as he is serviceable/slightly above average. His passing is just not good for someone who claims to be a QB.

The last thing I believe any of us should be right now is conclusive or worried. We haven't even played a snap of real football.

Although, being pessimstic might do well for managing your expectations.

The players will be running 110% for the new coach when they step into the stadium against BYU. That's all we need to know. They seem to like the new staff and the debut of their first game experience will be that of staying in the starting rotation.

What you are seeing right now is players being coached up. This is how they work things out. It's not September. I wouldn't go into full panic mode just yet. This is where we see how much better of a head coach Riley truly is. He will be playing with someone else's recruits. Hopefully, we'll see him adjust to their skill set and not try to force the square peg in the round slot.

Yeah someone else threw for 2700 yards and ran for 700, which was good enough for 2nd in the Big 10 in total offense per game.

That means the other 12 QBs in the conference must suck.

Seems as though TA is the lesser of 4 evils at QB, not excited about this group of QB's

Tommy did not do very well throwing the ball vs the "good" teams we faced last year. And we will likely be asking him to throw more this year. His top game was against USC and while he didn't...he could have very easily thrown 5 interceptions that game. We no doubt need him to be better if we expect to compete for championships.

That may have been his best and worst game he's ever played for Nebraska all wrapped up into one. While I agree he was lucky not to throw at least 5 INT's, we also have to remember we had just fired our HC and things were a little uneasy for TA, who loved Bo a lot. Had to be tough for him to see his friend get canned, then have to go play a bowl game.

I can name one team that has three QBs that would start ahead of TA. Want to argue that?

Yes. This quote stuck out out me....

“Our coaches have done an excellent job of preparing us for camp,” Gangwish said. “When we come out here, there’s not that many questions. People aren’t wondering what we’re doing — what the play is, how it works. When we get out here, we’re ready to go.

So in the past, the players didn't know what to do and the coaches didn't know what they were doing so of course, you'd get a lot of coach speak coming out of practices. Because they had no idea how to grade out (speculation) players on a daily basis so they didn't know where to look for improvements?

Sounds like we are seeing the growing pains of actually trying to improve instead of survive. I'm liking what I'm hearing...especially that its not all roses and unicorns with the "process". Langsford actually saying "you need to improve here" and getting upset when it doesn't happen at practice? Novel idea. Don't wait til the game to blow up when you had all camp to fix it.

This. Tommy is not a superstar, but is solid. Those are solid numbers. He needs to improve his pass decision making. There is no reason to be down in the mouth about the kid. I am glad we have him. Felt the same way about TMart. Guys that are trying to win games.

Spring of 2017 we will have a real good qb corp; and I believe we will see recruiting keep it so. This is assuming we keep our outstanding commits; who could conceivably see playing time in the fall of 2016. I believe all the rep sharing will continue; but now there is an edge too it - as they seek a qb who can be a back up; but also rotate in and perform parts of the offense, if TA can't execute.

Oddly enough someone was comparing Joe Daley, Turner Giil and TA. When they worked the way to stats when they were sophs, TA had many more yards than TG , and similar %'s - If I was picking one side by side at that point, I would have picked TA. We know TA's great moments; and he will be a junior - If he masters vision and progressions on the field, he hits the next exceptional level and we win 10+; if not we need to rotate in another we can fill his weaknesses or give him a breather, if we have one. GBR

I don't think there is a single QB on our team that Riley would have recruited for his ideal offense. He's doing the best he can with what he's got, and will tailor the offense the as he needs to with the personnel he has. TA brings a lot to the table, but has problems making proper decisions and has accuracy issues, that's not new news. Unfortunately, that's also THE key to a Riley offense, from the QB perspective.

TA4 will be the starter easily. If he progresses, he will not be challenged. Could get interesting if we see bad reads, missed receivers, wtf interceptions, etc. though.

It might be wise on those 3rd and longs to put a speed guy like LB Newby on the line and just let him get the QB.

Sure show me their season stats?

And that lies directly on the shoulders of this coaching staff.

I said stats, not a TEAM accomplishment. I don't think anyone on this board thinks TA is as good as any of the ISO QBs.

So in essence that means nothing. Name another team besides everyone's consensus #1 team at that position.
