2nd and 1, made 3-4, first down
1st, make 8
2nd lose 4
3rd, make 4
Nebraska ball.

Did I miss a play?

That first 1st down play actually got a first down and the marker guys still showed it was 2nd and short. The following four downs equaled about 9.6 yards, and they turned the ball over on downs. They thought it was 3rd down when it was actually 4th.

I'm not sure that first play of the half actually got 10 yards. They moved the chains but Illinois snaps the ball from inside the 35 yard line. So no first down should have been awarded. I kind of think Illinois got screwed a bit on that one. But I must admit that I like the counter narrative a lot: we got out coached by a coach who doesn't know what down it is.

Even worse than the officiating on this situation was our offensive response: 2 yard loss, incomplete pass , procedure penalty, and interception. So lose 7 yards and throw interception. Almost looked like Illinois tried to do that.

Referees
Early in the third quarter, Illinois gained nine yards on first down, but somehow the chains moved forward for a first down. On what was supposed to be second and one, Illinois gained four yards to the 38 yard line for what should have been a first and ten. Except it was now 2nd and 6. Nobody noticed the error until after Illinois, thinking it was third down, came up short and the refs realized that it was actually fourth down. After a lengthy delay to review what all had happened, Nebraska took over on downs...and promptly threw an interception to give the ball back to Illinois.

But that wasn't the only screwup by referees in football. On third and 23, Oklahoma State gained 18 yards...and a first down, thanks to the Big XII referees.
