Spielman had already passed Grimm on the depth chart last week. Grimm and his family can try to argue he was unhappy or homesick, but IMO, this was all about teenage angst over Spielman impressing Danny Langsdorf in KW's absence.

It can be multiple things. If someone were willing to make me a freshman phenom, I'd stay too. Until they weren't.

Do I think he was unhappy? Sure. Was he emotionally ready to leave home? Probably not. But, its more than a coincidence that he decides to officially quit and leave the same day the coaches are going to "ask him to redshirt."

Grimm and Spielman were both basically the #8 option for PT at wideout this season. They're both talented and fairly even in ability. But they were also competing for a returner spot. The coaches felt Spielman was the better option on special teams. THat meant Grimm was heading to a redshirt.

If Grimm was surefire staring at PT this season, I don't believe he leaves, even if he was unhappy. Spielman's surge this past week forced Nebraska's hand.... That shift towards JD was likely the tipping point IMO.

Yep. He can claim all day that he's not homesick and he wasn't mad he got redshirted. But I'm not buying. Who wouldn't be feeling that way?

Great choir teacher I had once told everyone who tried out for a solo that only a few people were going to get one. The rest of us were allowed to be disappointed, that was good, it means we cared about it. But we should not be discouraged and it was not an excuse to give up trying.

And I'm sure the coaches tried to talk him out of it again this time, because he's a good WR and would be a big part of the rotation next year. That doesn't mean JD hadn't passed him this year and he wasn't upset about it.

I can't remember all of the early spring enrollees we've had, but the track record is not good. In the least, coming early hasn't helped many of them to play right away, but overall I think a good number of them have flamed out. Who was the first? Kurt Dukes? Don't have time to think of them all, but it's not exactly the Who's Who of Husker football if I recall correctly.

maybe we could come up with the "all early enrollee hall of fame team" , but I'm not that convinced that most of those kids don't need the time to just be kids a little longer. plenty of time to be an adult during the next 50-80 years.

Spielman is an absolute stud. Can't wait to see what this kid can do over the next few years. Mike Grant (Bud's son), his HS coach at football powerhouse Eden Prarie, said that JD was the best FB player he has coached over 2+ decades, and they've had some great players come through the program. Nobody could tackle him, it was like an 18 yo playing against 12 year olds.

All this rings so true; in fact when it was first rumored, I thought the success of these two had forced a third player to make the decision. Just a shame, the homesickness; he should realize how young he is and how much he could physically mature. I think your also right on the tipping point; and I would guess, he is also staring at the recruits on the sheet for next year - going to be a great group!! But plenty of room for talent; with who we will graduate. I am not looking it up; but isn't JD the same physical size of JR. Ahem GBR

Love JD. I still can't understand how he could be a three star recruit and Tjon Lindsey a five star, same kind of film: size, speed moves, etc. Just glad he's ours, hope he can have an impact right away (ala DPE).

I might be wrong in saying this, but hasn't HCMR actually been on record saying that he's not a huge fan of kids enrolling early?

I think there might be something to it just letting them be kids while they are still kids. Moving half way across the country by yourself as a 17 year old is not the easiest thing to do.

What's interesting though is coach Riley has signed 6 guys that have enrolled early; Anderson, Lee, Young, Williams, O'Brien and Grim with another 3-4 currently committed that are expected to enroll early. Johnson, Gebbia, Bando and for some reason I think there's another one, maybe McQuitty?
