Well we are using a freshman punter that wasn't supposed to be playing.
Scholarship punter
Really?Read still being employed at NU after seasons end will say a hell of a lot about the ship Riley is running. Let's hope he's a goner. His pay and spot can be used elsewhere if this is what we are going to get out of his "special" teams.
Recruited by our DEDICATED special teams coach...
Most freshman are brought in not expected to start. Most need some development first.
What??? All i Read in every recruiting profile is these kids saying "I have no plans on red shirting, I'm expecting to go and compete". How many PUNTERS get scholarships nationally? I know he's going to get better but blocked punts, penalties, formation issues all fall at feet of coaching and the players.
Do you really think this kid (or the coaches) thought he was going to come in and beat out Foltz for the job?
Not my point- of course no one thought he would beat out Sam; however he was/is one of the best punters in the nation(according to the coaches and rivals) and when you are a punter and given a 4-5 year scholarship(very rare) it's not the equivalent in terms of expectations of a walk-on true freshman.
How is this different than all the other highly rated recruited freshman that are given time to develop? See the Doman thread.
Scholarship punter
Does a kicker/punter need to put on additional size or gain strength in order to compete at the next level. My answer would be "no".
Get serious. We never expected Caleb to be playing this year. It was the tragic passing of Foltz that led to him being thrown to the wolves early.
ST has been terrible. But citing Caleb's punting isn't a strong piece of evidence to support the argument.

Duh on Foltz passing..... Why not cite Calebs punting?? Special teams includes punting doesn't it? He's on scholarship is he not? Read my posts (entirely) above before you blast--- was he not ranked highly by our staff and rivals? Check out who Alabama's punter is and compare....

He's averaging 39.4 yrds/punt and the #1 rated punter is at 48.8. Add in out horrible punt coverage and it doesn't look too bad.
I cringe each time we line up to punt. But I want to give Caleb the benefits of the doubt.
He was recruited as a punter? Then he likely has punting ability, I am sure there was film and evaluation and discussions with his High School coaches about it. I am sure he has the ability, and my guess is that it's somewhat, or largely, mental, or a confidence issue.
That's your one job or your one role on the team and there can be a lot of pressure with that. Maybe he psyches himself out, maybe he puts a lot of pressure on himself. I certainly don't watch practices, so can't say for sure, but I bet he is fine in practice, but game day in front of 90,000 people all watching you, I have to think he feels some pressure, especially being thrust into this role unexpectedly.
I bet he gets into a groove soon, gets over his jitters, and starts punting like he knows he can. I am being an optimist I guess, and I hope that's the case. The mental part of the game is huge for a 17 or 18 year old, once he gets some confidence back and stops 'overthinking' things, maybe we see a different side of Caleb. I hope so.
Just trying to give a college freshman the benefit of the doubt. We've been blessed and spoiled over the last 20 years with above average kicking, we expect it. He'll get there I hope.
...all I'm saying is he is a part of the special teams and that phase of the team has not been good, period.

No. You were pretty clear.
Thats you specifically commenting on Caleb.
I think some people saying that they are willing to give the young man a break because of a lot of factors and that Bruce Read's problems aren't necessarily Lightborn's fault.Yea he is a scholarship punter and not some walk on freshman, so what's your point?
Are you happy with the punting and special teams play?
That because someone is a freshman and on scholarship they aren't supposed to excel and we should expect subpar play from here on out?
Also, I believe that he had been averaging close to 42 yards per punt in the three games prior to Saturday night. It looked like he had turned things around, but had a bad night. That's the problem with freshmen. Consistency.
Bruce Read is a poor coach as far as on-the-field results. Not even sure that's debatable at this point. There are many that point to his salary and that is the main reason they aren't Read fans. The counterpoint to that is why do we care how much he gets paid...it's not like it's out of our pocket? Here's the flaw with that reasoning: Nobody actually cares what Read is getting paid...it's just that for $450,000/yr you could get a BIG TIME recruiter and he could surely coach special teams as well, especially as much as Read delegates ST duties to other coaches. Read is not a big time recruiter and gets poor on-the-field results at the same time. He could make $100,000 and Nebraska could still do better.
Not sure why you included my quote with that post, but I am one of the people that said he is one of the main talent evaluators in the program and that is where his value to this program is. It sure isn't at ST coordinator. He is called a poor recruiter, but recruiting players isn't what he is required to do here. I couldn't care less if he is put out to pasture at one or both of his jobs.Careful bro.... your about to enter a world of pain spitting fire like that. What your about to be told is he is the main talent evaluator and it's because of a thin roster and it's none of your business what he makes! He's a people person d#%]^*!!
