I don't know what or who, but something has to be done. 2 crappy punts, a blocked field goal and giving up a fake punt in one game is not going to get it done most days.
Les Miles? With his son here would he take 3-5 years away as a head coach?

Have you watch this year?? ST play has been poor all year. For punt returns they have to attack these rugby spread punters to create hurried kicks= returns for DPE. Nebraska back in the day used to GO AFTER punt blocks-- I've not seen any jail breaks the past 2 years!!

I believe that the NCAA will increase staff limits by one coach by next season. There is a proposal out there for it and I've heard there is a good chance it passes. So, hopefully we have 2 spots to fill.First, we don't have a special teams coach, we have a special teams coordinator (because it's so important). Second, the NCAA limits the number of staff coaches, so we would have to remove our current special teams coordinator.
You would think that Nebraska goes after every single punt to block it with the number of players in DPE's face when he calls for a fair catch every time. Bu no, they didn't go after it, they just don't block.

I'm going to throw this out there because I'm crazy. If NCAA doesn't pass an additional coach, I'd like Riley to move Read to chief talent scout or whatever, and then hire Tavita.
If NCAA passes an extra coach, I'd like Riley to do the above, but then bring in Bill Busch.
I see a number of positives. Busch was at NU before with Callahan. He was a pretty good ST guy. He was a damn good recruiter. He also worked with safeties. This last little tidbit would allow Banker to get away from coaching safeties himself and look at the overall picture, but still allow the DB's to be split by position group and get the extra attention.
I like the idea of a stud recruiter/ST coach but I don't like this notion that Read is owed anything or that he needs to "move upstairs". If he can't have good ST play after all these years of being a strictly ST coach I sure don't want him upstairs in the evaluation and looking over the shoulder of our new coach. The "I did it this way"-- routine.
On two 1st half punt returns we had 10 guys out there, 1 was the fake puntI don't know about all 4th downs on Saturday but we have kept our D on the field a few times in recent games just in case of the fake punt. In that case we are playing for the fake and not blocking as our players are not blockers and are committed to preventing a conversion. In those instances where the D stays on the field and not the return team, it then becomes the responsibility of the D and not ST coaching. Read gets a pass on them.
Anyone know the last time we blocked a kick?
Read does that already (talent eval). And its apparently the one thing he's good at. Its not a consolation prize, IMO, its merely divesting him of areas he's not very good in.
