Message Board Musings
Iowa board
Mosai Newsom announcing Monday. I'm expecting Nebraska, but can't say I've heard for sure yet.
KF gon lose another cruit.
I'd rather have Tomari Fox.
Iowa offered him about a year ago, but the two sides haven't been in contact much recently. Fox remains Iowa's top remaining DL target.
Can't force them to come if they don't want to. But let's be honest, this is a recruiting failure. A good player we wanted and we would be happy if he committed to Iowa.
Not sure how this is a recruiting failure if the coaches haven’t been in contact with him for a while. They’ve focused their attention elsewhere on other needs.
Why hasn’t Iowa been recruiting him then?
What evs. We'll get somebody better.........and we will.
I don’t think we can say one way or the other right now if Iowa did indeed want him. Either they stopped contacting him because there was no mutual interest from his part, or because they have others higher on their board.
I thought it has been pretty clear that he wasn't coming to Iowa for quite a while. The fact that he wasn't invited to the 6-22 official invite weekend was pretty telling.
You are convinced this is recruiting failure? Blair said Iowa hadn't been in contact for a while and he wasn't invited to the 6-22 official invite weekend.
If it's true what you say and the Iowa coaches really wanted him then I agree that it's a big failure to not invite him and to stop contacting him but I think this one maybe the coaches just decided to move on a while ago or perhaps Newsome decided to move on a while ago.
Regardless of what happened, you won't know if it's a recruiting hit or miss until the guy actually produces on a college football field.
I think this was made pretty clear very early in the process that he wasn't all that interested in Iowa and Iowa wasn't all that interested in him. As Huskermeister said above, this kid is a project but he certainly has the frame. We'll see if Frost can develop talent or if he needs it delivered in a pretty package ready to open.
I'm pretty sure Iowa was interested in him, but he didn't necessarily return the interest in the same manner. It takes two to tango. Kudos to the Iowa coaches to realize this early and focus on others who do have interest in our program. 'If they can snag Fox out of GA we're doing very well for ourselves at the DE position.
I feel like I remember reading something kind of like that a while back, in regards to his recruitment with Iowa vs. Nebraska.
Yeah, once Iowa took Jake Karchinski and Jalen Hunt, Newsom was no longer a priority. They want Tomari Fox with the last remaining defensive line spot and are still in good position to get him. On Newsom's side, it seems like he's been focused on Nebraska for a while now anyway.
Newsom is a tremendous athlete- the question is, can he turn that into results on the field
Newsom just committed to Nebraska.
It's not any different than people who want to assume every player we don't get is a miss. The sure numbers say Iowa is going to lose more than they win. If we throw out 60-70 offers and are only going to sign 20 then it stands to reason you aren't going to win a high percentage of the time. When we do lose you will always have the people saying I like the guys we have better and you will always have the people saying our coaches are getting whipped in recruiting. It's whatever side of the fence you want to sit on. For me, I will always support the guys we have on the roster. I'm not going to worry about Scott Frost out recruiting Iowa because I'm pretty damn sure Nebraska has out recruited Iowa almost every year I've been alive.
What the hell are the people in Waverly doing? How could they let this happen? Can't wait for BLACK FRIDAY!!!
Recruits want to be told what they want to hear and that is the approach taken by many coaches/universities including NE. Iowa tells recruits what needs to be said vs. what what the recruit wants to hear
Does he have a committable offer from Iowa? I would say no.
Iowa was interested and offered
He wasn't as interested in Iowa
Iowa moved on and took someone else
He commits to Nebraska
End of Story
Consider this: Fox is a better player from a far more fertile recruiting territory.
What was the score again last year? Oh 56-14 IOWA!!!!!!!!
And with Nebraska employing the 3-4, he gets to be a DE, which I suspect had a lot more appeal to him than 4-3 DT.
Nick Henrich commits to Nebraska
No, I don't agree they talk about their 90's success like MOST Iowa fans talk about those listed seasons. Granted their sucess was on a even higher level then ours in comparison, in my experience those "talks" carry much more arrogent and egotistical undertones.
Over or not is irrelevant to the bigger picture. Yes we want to win every battle and Heinrich is damn good: however who we already have on board and who we have coming on board are outstanding. We have tremendous athletes in Jinnings, McDonald and Campbell that once coached up by our staff will make every single one of you forget about Heinrich. Grass isn’t greener. Whatever is in the water these days in Lincoln will come to play out and we will continue on coaching up our guys and putting them in the NFL. The ones who get it see it and want to be a part of it. We have very good things coming with our current crop of LB and future LB. I find it more interesting/intriguing than disappointing that we lost Heinrich. I love what we have already and think they are being overlooked. Mark my words Campbell for one will exceed expectations.
It is ok. Congrats to the kid for living what he feels is his dream. All of us who grew up and still are huge Iowa fans can't understand it. It really sucked knowing that Ross P. grew up an Iowa fan and committed then de-committed , but it worked out for him.
Find the kids who really want to be Hawkeyes and move forward. Who knows maybe it is over, or maybe it isn't. Iowa will find someone to fill his spot, and Iowa Football will move on.
So you think they beat up Iowa this year? I don't. They'll most likely be underdogs. I'm not convinced it will be the year after either when we return almost everybody. Closer to a ten win than a four win team? I don't they'll be close to a four win team as Frost gets going, but i don't think they'll be closer to 10 wins this year either It's not a stretch to look at their schedule and see them far closer to four than ten in 2018
I don't think Frost is anything like Bo...at all. Frost is a much better coach. Those teams that Bo beat were not exactly the greatest Iowa teams of all time in 2011 and 2012. Since that time, Iowa has dominated the series. They'll win under Frost and they will beat Iowa again, but it won't happen next year and maybe not even the year after.
I think it’s entirely possible they beat Iowa this year. Technically it’s a rivalry, Frost is a new coach and has some momentum due to “newness”. Also, you seem to be talking about strictly 2018. I’m talking about overall during his tenure.
Iowa may win this year but I doubt the series is going to be real lopsided. Also, if you think Frost is a much better coach then you can possibly think Iowa will have his number for long. I’m not sure how much Iowa football you watch (sarcasm) but we don’t exactly call our shot against any team, we’re more Jekyll and Hyde.
No, both Honus and Henrich were geographic decisions as they didn't want to get too far away from their momma's apron strings.
I really think this boiled down to a position coach decision. It’s clear to me Ruud can out recruit Wallace. Ruud played LB at NU, can identify with kids playing that position and has intrinsic passion for the program. From what I’ve read Wallace is a good recruiter but he doesn’t have that same personal history and experience at Iowa or prior experience playing big time college football to use as an edge. It’s the same background that make Bell and Woods such good recruiters for Iowa.
Weird that Nebraska won 4 games just last year but they are closer to 10 wins. Solid analysis.
Tell me the last time they only won 4 games in a season? Last year was an anomaly. Seriously tho, if you think Nebraska is closer to a perennial 4 win team I think you’re huffing paint fumes. I’ll bet you they have another 10 win season before they only win 4 games in a season? Deal
I don’t think they’re closer to 4. I think they are a 6 win team this season. They sure as hell aren’t a 10 win team though. Arguably the toughest schedule in the Big Ten combined with a 1st year head coach and a freshman QB who didn’t even play last year.
This will only add fuel to Kirk & Brian's fire to absolutely destroy Nebraska. Kirk has had a strange chip on them ever since he said the '14 game still haunts him. I'm a firm believer in KF for this game.
C’mon man, you do know what perennial means? No one is saying their schedule isn’t brutal and that they win 10 games in 2018. I’m saying they are closer to averaging 10 wins a season than only 4 a season. The last time they had 4 wins in a season was 1961. It doesn’t happen often.
I know what the original statement was. I asked him what he based it on and gave no answer and turned to name calling. I don’t think anybody expects Nebraska to win 4 games a season any more than we would expect Iowa to. I certainly don’t think Nebraska is close to being a perennial 10 win program either. I would say 8 wins a year with an occasional 10 win season similar to Iowa.
So far he's recruited right where they've always been. Newest one a kid from Omaha? Why is everyone so surprised they kept a kid instate?
My experience is they rarely know what the hell is going on themselves. Peer pressure is huge and no one likes to work their butt off at practice for 2-3 yrs before seeing the field. My gut tells me he will regret the direction he has chosen 3 yrs from now. The black and gold is deep into his life and that doesnt go away easily.
I thought that Henrich was a take due to talent, but the staff has said, if they didnt take him they wouldn't be taking another LB.
I just saw a huge husker sign on 120th and Pacific right across from St. Roberts last week. Struck me as a little odd. It had a blackshirt and something along the lines of #hashtag building from within the state. I couldn't help but think it was put there on purpose to help encourage Henrich but also an attempt make clear the plan to lock down the borders. Fant's success is killing them. The sign was a smart move in my opinion, can spend cash however you want on signs and can't hurt recruiting or season ticket sales.
No, of course the series won't be lopsided. Don't even know why you make that point. But during the next two years, Iowa will be better. No, I don't think they get Iowa at Kinnick in November. I think they're going to have problems getting to six wins next year. They might be playing a freshman at QB. The schedule is brutal.
I like what Frost has done, but I see two holes with his philosophy and one huge challenge for him. His offense looks good in the warmth of Florida against the likes of AAC competition. Or in the relatively warm climate of the PAC 12. But let's see how it looks in November, in snow, wind and extreme cold. Games in November often aren't 42-41. Can Frost win those 14-13 games?
That brings me to the challenges. Nebraska is soft inside. They've always been. That's why physical teams like Wisconsin, MSU, Ohio State and yes Iowa, beat them up on both sides. The key question is can Frost change that? I think maybe he can, but it's going to take time.
The other is defense. Frost's teams are not defense-oriented, which is fine in the PAC 12 or the AAC. You don't win games in the Big Ten with the philopsophy of trying to win shootouts. I get it, you love those cute, spread it out offenses, but teams like Michigan, MSU, Ohio State, PSU, Iowa, Wisconsin and Northwestern play consistent defense. For all I know, Nebraska might be more like Indiana with Wilson. The whole outscoring thing didn't really work out for them. Nebraska will get better players, but if they don't figure out defense, they're going to come up short against those teams I mentioned above.
As for Iowa calling a shot, other than a sort of weird typical Swag dig, what does that even mean?
Calling a shot is another term for penciling in a W. I guess another way to say it is that there are no guarantees wins. I suppose you could call that a dig, but that’s awful sensitive.
I agreed with their schedule being brutal and said so in this very thread. I also said in another thread comparing Rich Rod and Frost that Frost will have to be more devoted to the defensive side of the ball than Rich Rod seemed to be. I also agree that he will have to bring toughness to the trenches if they want to be relevant later on in the season. As for their offense, I’m going to play wait and see. They may be fine Sept and October. Come November they will have to run the ball abs stop the run.
Iowa - Nebraska stuff
I swear, sometimes I think people would rather win the recruiting battle than the football game. Here are some relevant stats:
Last several years of recruiting classes according to Rivals
2009: Nebraska 28th, Iowa 63rd
2010: Nebraska 22nd, Iowa 42nd
2011: Nebraska 15th, Iowa 30th
2012: Nebraska 25th, Iowa 43rd
2013: Nebraska 17th, Iowa 53rd
2014: Nebraska 32nd, Iowa 59th
2015: Nebraska 31st, Iowa 58th
2016: Nebraska 24th, Iowa 42nd
2017: Nebraska 20th, Iowa 40th
2018: Nebraska 21st, Iowa 40th
Iowa/Nebraska game results since Nebraska joined the conference;
2011: Nebraska 20 - 11
2012: Nebraska 13 - 7
2013: Iowa 38 - 17
2014: Nebraska 37-34
2015: Iowa 28 - 20
2016: Iowa 40 - 10
2017: Iowa 56 - 14
If losing the recruiting battle ends up with a Hawkeye victory on the field, then I'm just not gonna feel too bad about losing the recruiting battle. Ever.
I’m not disagreeing with your post one bit but I wonder what the series record would look like if Iowa consistently had Nebraska’s recruiting rankings.
The 1961 through 1980 era clearly hurt Iowa. Nebraska during 1940s and 1950s was ugly, but they broke out, as Iowa stumpled. It will be interesting to see, if both teams can get to a point where Black Friday decides to West?
Well of course since recruiting rankings mean everything we would be undefeated against Nebraska and probably have a couple of national championships in that time. I mean Nebraska did so great with those amazing classes, so we'd have to do even better. Probably not since the road to the Big 10 West championship goes through Madison not Lincoln.
When you get great recruiting with great coaching you get Alabama-Clemson-Ohio St. We can do better in both. What hurts is losing so called life long Hawk fans. Let's hope the cyclones experience that next year. I do think nebby will not like the next two encounters on the field.
It seemed like half of Riley's recruiting classes were receivers.
I thought I may be over that 2014 loss. Apparently I'm not yet.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't open this thread and immediately think "this reminds me of the 2011 loss to Nebraska."
I don’t think I can get over that loss until we absolutely steal a win we weren’t supposed to get (just like ‘14 for NE). Should be 5 in a row over them.
Your sarcasm is naive. You mean to tell me if Iowa’s coaching staff wasn’t working with even higher level talent, they wouldn’t be even more successful? Also, I think it’s important to note I said recruiting ranking, not their players.
If you don’t think recruiting rankings mean nothing, then I guess Alabama means nothing, Clemson means nothing. High level recruits playing for good coaches are who powers college football. When a high level recruit plays for crappy coaches you get Notre Dame.
I think he is saying he's not worrying about Nebraska out recruiting Iowa because Nebraska doesn't seem to be a very good team these days. Nebraska has always recruited better than Iowa and probably always will.
Big Ten Media Day Notes. After big Jim we get Scott Frost, Fitz, Franklin, Brohm, Boat Rower, Ash, and then Harbaugh.
Scott Frost is up. Says he is excited to be back at Nebraska. Said Nebraska belongs in the upper echelon of college football.
Frost talked QB recruiting. Said his QB's have to be able to process quickly. Said they don't have to be highly recruited. Said recruiting reception has been good. Parents remember Nebraska being great, kids don't. Need to change that.
Frost wants to get Nebraska back to being a hard working blue collar program. Said success this year is getting better every day.
Frost was asked about rivalry in conference. Basically Nebraska has had them and now Iowa might be, but they don't. Said it is because Nebraska hasn't been what they should be for a while. Said every program has rough patches. Said Oklahoma did and they have gotten back. Goal for him is to get Nebraska back too. Basically he ducked saying anything about a rivalry.
Is this a dig? Not sure how to interpret that
Fitz said education will be key for student-athletes when it comes to sports gambling. Said they have done injury report for years at NW. Said he would not have a problem with national injury report. Asked about divisions in Big Ten. Said there is competitive balance. Said Scott Frost will bring Nebraska back. Said he has a winning record against east, so they are doing their part.
Don't think it was a dig. More of an assessment of Nebraska.
I didn't take it that way. I interpreted it as "Since we've joined the Big Ten we've kind of sucked, so it's been hard to create a genuine rivalry". Which is pretty accurate. Even though we've had some great games against Wisconsin, they've dominated in the W/L column. And while Iowa/Nebraska is much more competitive in that respect, the last few games have been absolute blow outs. Neither really screams "rivalry" if they're so one sided.
Nebraska hasn’t been terrible. They’ve won like 9 games in a season like 3 of the last 5 years. The 4 and 6 win years are when they struggled.
Fleck is done. Thank goodness. Chris Ash is up next and then Harbaugh.
Glad Fleck is not Iowa's coach, that dude is embarrassing.
And to me, when someone says rough patch in football, I dont take it to mean a couple years (which is essentially what Nebby went through). I take it as five plus years, give or take. And even then, they would have to be perennial contenders, which Nebraska wasnt. At the end of the day, hey, whatever gets you motivated, but its getting a bit ridiculous over there in Lincoln.
Harbaugh talking about some of his new coaching hires. Seems excited about the additions.
It's hard to call it a rivalry when Iowa has kicked their a$$ the last 3 years.
Ohio State site just asked Harbaugh about losing to Ohio State six straight years...Ouch. Anyway, he said they need to get better and win more games. Ohio State site just asked Harbaugh about losing to Ohio State six straight years...Ouch. Anyway, he said they need to get better and win more games.
Haha damn... Harbaughs' gettin it
I think you missed an opportunity to ask about being 1-5 vs Iowa in the last six meetings as well.
Typical Iowa media, afraid to ask the tough questions.
I am watching Harbaugh explain significance of D day, Holy crap is he on drugs, I can't even figure out what he is saying
Harbaugh looks like a scrawny old man up there.....
Didn't think I could hate Frost more. But now I do!!!

Frost: they definitely want to compare themselves to Oklahoma and not Iowa. They think they are an Oklahoma level program. That’s never gonna happen if you can’t even beat Iowa though.
Harbaugh: Wants to win championships and think about the big picture. That’s good. You’re Michigan. But if you can’t even beat your MSU that’s never gonna happen.
Both these guys need to take a few steps back and accept where they are. There are quite a few steps in between 1) determine if you are Nebraska or Michigan 2) win championships.
Frost just inspired Iowa for the next 20 years.
Screw Frost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And SCREW NEBRASKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big Ten Media Day 1 Thread
Nebraska's Scott Frost up next
Scut Farkas at the podium ...
Frost says kids have been really drawn to his coaching staff. The parents all remember Nebraska as Nebraska, but the kids don't. His job is to change that.
Well, he's nothing if not humble.
Not surprisingly, Frost is still a huge fan of Tom Osborne. Has him in the office once a week, wants to run the program like he did
Frost says there should be an eight-team playoff. Five conference champions and three at-large teams.
Scott Frost said 8 and I agree.
I think Frost would play if he could
On a different topic I also agree with you on James Franklin.
What is it about Franklin that makes my skin crawl. He just seems like a fast talking used car salesman still crying about losing scholarships 5 years ago.
I am disgusted by Dantonio but he is an excellent, no nonsense coach.
Meyer is a smug jerk at times but a hell of a coach.
Frost seems like a great hire for Nebraska.
Fitzgerald is a neat person and good coach.
He's absolutely right.
Frost says the Big Ten is the best conference in the country.
Wow, two things right (playoff). He’s on a roll

Nick Henrich ILB commits to...... Nebraska. The Omaha NE native had unofficially visited the U sometime ago. Wisconsin and the Damers were runner-ups. He visited Wisconsin twice and Becky thought they had a real good shot at him.
Fleck's WMU > Frost's UCF
Better the Corn Demons than the Skunks
Nebraska kid chooses Nebraska...shocker!
It’s funny when we worry about who other teams are getting. Blinders on, oars in the water. Excited for the future, and excited for the year that Thomas Barber, Kamal Martin, Blake Cashman are going to have, low 3 stars and a walk on. I’m worried there won’t be enough room for more! Boat continues to fill fast.
Too bad your BB didn't lock down our top ones this year.
Id say Coach Fleck has done pretty well thus far. Sorry you’re not as enthusiastic about this class. Many would disagree including a few fathers on here who I pray have you on ignore.
Too bad Minnesotans don't support Gopher football like Nebraska does for the Huskers.
We look pretty good at linebacker without this guy. Not a position of need. Let's get another safety or two. Do you think Cashman will start at linebacker? I'd like to see Coughlin playing there, but Cashman was hurt last year and we didn't know it; he should see lots of action unless he's still a rush end.

I’m sure glad we have Brohm instead of Fleck
Yeah lots of excuses and preparing fans for a losing season
Brohm seems more genuine and more comfortable in front of the camera
Didn't see it but in the past Fleck seems so jumpy and jittery he makes me anxious just watching. He's in a hurry to say something, anything before he catches fire. I think he likes having the "Row the boat" mantra because it gives him something to say before he accidently regurgitates something even more stupid.
Fleck is a very good speaker but the excuse making was out in full force. I believe he knows this year isn't going to be promising
Well it is year 1!
I would've loved for someone to ask Fleck why he needs a year zero when other coaches like Brohm didn't need one
Harbaugh continues to be Harbaugh - just comes off as a jerk who’s not interested in answering questions or being there. He is the only speaker today with no opening statement, reflects poorly on UM, imhko.
I kind of didn’t mind that. I felt like the other coaches - yes, even Brohm - gave very canned opening statements. I don’t mind folks that like to dispense with the bullshit
Ok, but you don’t need to treat the reporters like they are 5 year olds. He literally recited his entire coaching staff from memory on both sides of the ball (including GA’s) when asked about the offensive coaching changes. Wouldn’t respond to questions about how to perform better in rivalry games. It was all BS, so he dispensed with the preliminaries and fed them different BS.
On the other hand, I think Scott Frost is the real deal. The West is set for change and will improve overall. Fine with me to have Illinois and Minnesota at the bottom if it works out that way.
Year 0 according to ‘Lil PJ.

Iowa/Nebraska game results since Nebraska joined the conference;

Watching the B1G Media Day Press Conference
