Banker kept the defense on the field for 4th down and the Nickel Back didn't some out.
That’s so ‘junior high’
Nebraska coach Mike Riley wasn’t happy one bit with a 12-men-on-the-field penalty called on the Huskers’ punt return unit. The flag extended a drive that eventually turned into a Minnesota touchdown.
“Oh, I was so disappointed in that,” Riley said. “I absolutely hate that. It was so stupid. We left the defense on and not enough people came off. So it’s junior high. No, the junior highs would do it better than that.”
So what happened? Defensive coordinator Mark Banker said safety Aaron Williams is on the field in Nebraska’s “Delaware” package — that’s what NU calls its defense that stays on the field for punt returns only when the Huskers are in a nickel defense. Nebraska was in its regular defense, so Williams had to come off the field. He didn’t.
“Anywhere between the guys up in the booth counting, Aaron, myself, we just need to get him off the field,” Banker said.
