So it Turns Out That Reed Wasn't Responsible for 12 Men on the Field

Banker kept the defense on the field for 4th down and the Nickel Back didn't some out.

That’s so ‘junior high’
Nebraska coach Mike Riley wasn’t happy one bit with a 12-men-on-the-field penalty called on the Huskers’ punt return unit. The flag extended a drive that eventually turned into a Minnesota touchdown.

“Oh, I was so disappointed in that,” Riley said. “I absolutely hate that. It was so stupid. We left the defense on and not enough people came off. So it’s junior high. No, the junior highs would do it better than that.”

So what happened? Defensive coordinator Mark Banker said safety Aaron Williams is on the field in Nebraska’s “Delaware” package — that’s what NU calls its defense that stays on the field for punt returns only when the Huskers are in a nickel defense. Nebraska was in its regular defense, so Williams had to come off the field. He didn’t.

“Anywhere between the guys up in the booth counting, Aaron, myself, we just need to get him off the field,” Banker said.

Ok that plays on Banker. Can anyone state anything good bout Bruce Reed? He's an admin guy playing the role of coach.

The players and coaches on that side of the ball should be alert.

The particular play that everybody is bitching about though was a defensive player's mistake........soooooo....

I didn't say a word about that play. Banker can own the penalty, Read is still terrible.

DPE was back deep...we don't teach our returner to count men.

Too late, once we're in formation; which happened when DPE got back there, we have 12 men on the field. It was a royal screw-up, coaches and players.

Why would we blame Antonio Reed?

Come to find out, Bruce Read isn't responsible for anything. He's a people person. He has people skills. He's good with dealing with people.

False. Remember that one punt that was downed inside the 5? That was all him.

Not a good sign when Riley covers up for piss poor coaching. Is this something Saban or Leach would do?

Not really following you here... How did Riley cover up? He didn't point the finger at the specific coach I guess, but it is clear that he wasn't happy at all, and probably was as demonstrative as he could be comparing that error to junior high football...

How would Leach or Saban have handled it? I don't think they would have done anything different, certainly wouldn't have put it on any specific coach. So again, I'm not quite sure where you're going with this. Can you clarify?

Fixed that for you.

Pretty close. Drew has the resources behind him for private instruction. I'm not sold Read has much to do with it however, if Read comes back and Lightbourn takes a huge jump in year two, I'll start to buy it.

It still doesn't explain the other 10 guys aspect of the units.

You must be talking about lining up, blocking, and tackling on all the ST units. That has to be the responsibility of some coach other than the SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR.

When Coach Riley said that, I interpreted it as him appeasing the fans/press by phrasing it that way. I don't think he normally would have said something like that. It looks more to me like someone who is coping with the fishbowl and fan base here. I seriously doubt anyone is getting fired.

I agree, it doesn't look like anyone is even in trouble. BUT, I look at this more as good use of rhetoric. Take a problem, blow it up/amplify it in an emotional response, then distribute the blame on everyone. Then you can't blame one person, even if one person is supposed to be responsible.

Special teams are so important to us, we're not going to have a dedicated ST coach, we're gonna have ST coordinator. LOL, do what you have to do to protect the cronies.

So he works with his brother daily at practice?

I'm all for Read taking the train; however, at least give the guy the credit where it is due.

I'd be with you if I saw improvement throughout the season. He's been pretty $$ right from the get-go this season though IMO, which I would attribute to off-season work. Now it's definitely possible that most of that off-season work is with Read instead of individual instruction elsewhere, but I have my doubts with all of the resources Brown would have at his disposal.

Fair enough. I guess I would't presume he hasn't had an impact. Just my opinion though.
