So few commits??

So with the addition of the couple of commits this week, are we still in dire straights for commits, or are we all calmed down now?
Not sure we were ever in dire straights. Now if this was Nov yes. We still have time to put a class together. Obviously the quicker we can get our class together the better.

Just ignore the comments by some that said they were being attacked by those saying not to worry.
Not like everyone can have their own opinion, since I guess only ones allowed, ;).

Since the thread took a dumb turn, I say here and now, if the reason some are sooo concerned about how many commits we have, maybe its because Nebraska is thankfully still behind the curve and still arent paying their players.
I think that pretty much sums it up.

It doesn't really seem to matter what guys, ranking wise, Iowa gets. They always seem to get the most out of them. You have teams that consistently get top 10 recruiting classes and seem to have a hard time winning games. Development is just as important as recruiting rankings. Recently Nebraska has been able to get good recruiting classes but been horrible at developing that talent.
However I think a team needs to be able to have both to get to the top level consistently. I just don't think Iowa will ever be able to pull in the top talent needed to get to that next level like Ohio St or Alabama. Maybe Nebraska won't be able to either will see what Frost can do over the next few years. I think our history allows us to pull in better classes than many other schools in the Midwest. So far Frost over his history brief history at UCF has shown he can do more with less talent.
What I would like to see (I know will never happen) is restrictions in recruiting. There should be some sort of cap on how many top talent players 1 team can get. Certain location have a much better advantage. Hence why we are seeing the same teams over and over and over at the top. Need to be able to spread that talent out to give other teams a chance. So for instant could say. Per recruiting class can only have 1 -5 star guy. 10- 4 star guys. Alabama has 3 5 star guys and 23 4 star guys. Georgia has 5- 5 star guys and 15 4 star guys. All the school with the majority of 5 and 4 star guys are located in the south.

That sounds like socialism to me. Let’s go a step further and just not keep score or maybe let a committee decide how many points a weak team get before the game starts so it is a “fair” contest. Really Nebraska!

Why does NFL have a salary cap? To keep team who have more money from being able to buy the most talented players. The NCAA is no different, why should the teams located by the most talent have the advantage. Like the NFL salary cap is used to spread the talent around. NCAA should have a way to spread the talent around.
Technically that isn't socialism. Socialism would be taking a player already on a team and making that team give that player to another team.

No it is not socialism. At one time the school scholarship limit was I believe 105 with no limit on the number of walk ons. That was changed to 85 scholarships and a max squad of 105 players. That was done to prevent teams from stockpiling players . Not sure it would be right to force students to go far from home to play sports. parents could not see them play in person. If a player chooses to go then fine but not forcing them. Nebraska at one time did not have a problem enticing players to come from far distances. Things have changed for sure. Leaving the Texas conference did have a negative impact on recruiting I believe.

Agree. btw this is a "Discussion" thread so what is the problem if some of us have temporarily interrupted our Kool-Aid chug? We are only posing an opinion, slow start and reaching on a transfer or two and now taking an unranked CB with offers from non-power five schools and Illinois.

He’s a 3 star recruit and Iowa has taken tons of recruits just like him. I’m pretty sure Frost and his staff know how to evaluate players considering how many other teams offer players right after Frost does...so I’m golden with my Huskers new 3 star CB. Heck there quotes right on the front page about a Darrien Green-Warren at the 5 star Challenge talking about the Huskers, we also just had Joshuah Moten 4 star top 250 DB that just visited. The Husker are also in the mix with 4 star Brian George along with 3 star Kendrick Simpkins out of Alabama. So I’m not quite sure we are reaching or settling at all at CB recruits.

Well he is correct. The 85 scholarship limit is equivalent to the salary cap in the nfl. It was put in place to level the playing field. It sucks that we haven’t been able to compete at the level we once did, but how far do you have to go? Nebraska should be able to put together a roster that can be competitive without artificial assistance in the form of further restrictions.

What this proposal sounds like is a parent with an average performing kid, that wants the teacher to bring down the higher performing kids to your kid’s level rather than teach your kid up to a higher level. We need to learn to compete again and not look for someone else to make it easier for us. Toughen the eff up

I’d definitely get your point and I can agree with that. But that the same time...I wouldn’t mind seeing restrictions of some type being in forced. It would keep teams like Alabama, Clemson and so on from taking all the top players and it would level the playing field out. Then it would REALLY be about who has the best Head Coaches, systems and S&C and so on. And less about location and who won the last title. Either way...I’ll stay Neutral here ;)

The best head coaches get the best players and make them better. Clemson was on the same level as Nebraska until Dabo took over. He took advantage of what he had and made the team elite. They weren’t elite before, sans a couple of years in the early 80’s.

Nebraska has never been on a level playing field when it came to top talent being near by. Recruit and develop, do it yourself instead of wanting rules put in place to help you become equal.

I thought that the early signing period and being able to bring in recruits earlier was implemented based on what teams up north and in the Midwest wanted. Wasn’t it because these schools wanted to recruit and sign in the summer and fall and not in the winter? The southern schools responded by moving up the recruiting season by 8 months. As an example South Carolina has already had 26 official visits with 14 committed . Six have committed to other schools. Two of the six had committed to other schools before their official visit with us. So there are 6 that went on OV with us that are still undecided but we think we will get 4 of these. We also have 2 transfers in this class which will count against the 25 limit . This brings our class up to 16 players with the 4 that we think we will get resulting in a total of 20.
I will tell you what I have learned over the years. Some highly rated classes are really fools gold. Rating services rate speed position more highly that line positions. So you can sign lots of wr, db, rb, lb, and te and think you got something. Ranked high but very poor trench players means you will get plowed over by teams with solid trench players. Teams need to focus on trench players on both sides of the ball early. Rating services do not help much. What is needed is coaches that can evaluate trench players and get them to work out for the coaches. Check their attitude and commitment to football. Get trench players and you can start to build something. I bet Iowa and Wisconsin understands this as does Nebraska. S&C and coaching then can make a difference. You can still not win big even though you have excellent first team . Without a second team almost just as good you will wear down during tough games and against everybody as the season goes on. If a school can not get good trench players maybe they can just outscore them with speed .

Nailed it. Some schools have built in advantages but that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. We’ve done it before. We can do it again. It just takes time. Hopefully we finally have a coach that will be given the time.

Right and Frost is and has shown he can recruit with the best of them. Pulls off a top 15 class after a 4-8 rough start. And your right about Clemson, Bo Pelini and our Huskers handed Dabo and Clemson a bowl lose right when Clemson was getting into that groove. Now if Bo Pelini would have been a good recruiter like Dabo...dam you Bo :(

Michigan 9 commits in the last 5 days - I don’t see kansas and Iowa State listed prominently in the teams they beat out

Thats just an ignorant statement, as the recruiting hasnt changed nearly as much as the coaching has in quality.
And, that recruiting will only get better as the record gets better. Nebraska hasnt had a top twenty finish in recruiting for almost ten years, but it happened again. Maybe that texas league stank just needed to wear off?

Well I would not want facts to cloud your opinion. Facts does tend to confuse. You may want to check out the rival team recruiting data on your Nebraska site and check how many times Nebraska has finished in the top 20 in the last 10 years. You say they haven’t finished in the top 20 in the last 10 years except for 2019 under Frost. So start at 2010 and go to 2019 and check your statement.

Arent you being evasive?
This was the best class since Bos first or second class, which was the best since BCs class not long before that.
And, all the while, all weve heard is,we wont be able to recruit anymore, yet we are heading back towards those earlier days.
So, which is it?
Currently we are 12th in quality,we have several guys that meets that level of quality or exceeds it coming in, maintaining that level, or slightly improving it.
So, again, which is it?
We cant, or, the prior staffs werent capable of doing it and coaching them up and using the talent that is here, or, we arent doing what I just said we are?
You look it up.

Ok, heres 2011
https://nebraska.rivals.com/commitments/football/2011
8 of our top guys were busts, never shows or left.
No count
Same for several of Bos classes, he didnt know how or who to pick and how to use them.
Getting an athlete means nothing when your qb ends up being a fullback for the vikings, or just anther reciever who cant be counted on etc.
Even many of the better recruits werent developed.
So, even while we briefly had them, most never turned out, thats coaching, not getting them, but keeping them, that too is coaching.
Its who they got,the coaches, then what they did with them.
So, yes, we can recruit here, and yes, this staff are picking the right guys, know where and how to use them, but most of all, how to make them better.
So, not having texas as an opponent effecting our recruiting is hogwash.

With 5 listed commits we have the fewest number of commits of the top 75 schools. I'm sure we will have a very good class, but that number is a bit of a head-turner.

I feel sorry for many of the teams who already have their 20 guys, with few if any open spots left.
It must be reassuring, like being all warm n fuzzy, having recruiting basically wrapped up, with not alot to do during a dead period, glad those coaches can kick back and take it easy, since their fans surely feel good about their current position with so many commits.
God forbid a team has a non settling staff thats no pressure, tell it like it is, work their tails off, have a top fifteen class in quality, like last year, I mean, forget about all that, sarcastically, as a fan, why cant we be all warm n fuzzy? Why cant our staff kick their heels up? Why cant this staff just settle like so many other teams have.
Now, there's two groups of teams here, those who we compete with, which almost every one, has much longer established staffs, and their winning has already turned that corner, and those other teams, which for some reason, some of our fans are so concerned about with their 20 or so low 3* or unrated guys.
So, looking at our small sample size with this new staff, we arent that far behind where they were before, but, as Ive pointed out above, cramming a class with less time often leads to players leaving early, look no further than our 2018 class, where this staff had little time to really do it right, and how many departed from that class.
We a slightly behind what weve seen from this staff, easily made up in one flurry, so,.as long as its done right, I find comfort in what this staff is doing, because they are relentless, aren't putting up their heels, and most assuredly arent settlingat all.
My suggestion, sit back, watch and enjoy, it's going to get done, and done right,no doubts.

This tread is titled “so few commits” and discussion centered on that topic. Some discussed rules , geography, history . There is no doubt even from the most optimistic that geography does not help Nebraska and some may believe being in the Big Ten does not help either. This is based on difference makes generally will come from warm weather states that is southern and eastern states. Some may believe that asking players to go far from home then play games even further from home in cold weather is a bit of a negative. Some times a coach can make a difference. Review Nebraska’s yearly record since 1950. There are two coaches Devaney and Osborn that got the job done. In addition to their abilities notb sure if the rules helped at that time and being a part of the Big 8 helped. It would be interesting to see where recruits came from during that time. Nebraska has very good OL and DL during that time. Were they home grown? I believe during part of that time you could have as many walk ons as you wanted . Not so today. Does that impact Nebraska today?
Regardless for any program the head coach and his staff are the only ones that can address the advantages and constraints that each program faces today. So the head coach is the answer or the problem ! I have followed Nebraska since they left the Big 8 or 12 or whatever they called themselves then starting when USC played them in Orlando ‘s Capital One bowl. I thought that going to the Big 10 would present new challenges across all sports. I thought that going to the Big 10 would make geography a bigger issue but as I said any disadvantage can be over come by having the right coach.

They currently have the #4 ranked class in the nation.

16 of the 19 commits are a great distance from Ann Arbor

My point was, and is, we won it all five times, not three or once, but five times, and the world hasnt shifted, state borders are still there, our location is the same now as then, even when we were winning national titles without playing texas.
Walkons are increased with this staff, previous staffs decreased their numbers, so, a coaching decision once again.
At the time, the big ten were the big one, two if you count michigan, so, same scenario for the Big at the time, yet, the big eight won many more nattys in that time, something the Big doesnt want to talk about.

Its now a matter for this staff to do what theyve done before, win a lot of games, something previous staffs never had claim to, plus, with the small sample size, get top recruits and use them, still early on that count for using them, but fine in the getting them.
The numbers this year are a huge weekend away from last years top 15 finish in numbers and quality, so again, my concerns arent great until I see a change for the worse, which I havnt seen as late.

Well I tried to break it down a little. Frost was only at UCF for 2 years . This was his only head coaching experience. He now has been a head coach for a total of 3 years. His first year at UCF he was 6-7. His second year he went 13-0 and his first year at Nebraska he was 4-8. The next 3 years will be interesting. He will need time and fan support .

he's got both in spades

So, a potential five star OT is from......next door, many miles from meatchicken.
Meatchicken is Big landlocked, theyd best get their guys from Big territory in bigger numbers, in states where theyve been going for a century getting guys.
But, Colorado?
Mizzou? Not so close, not like Kansas or the Dakotas, and were always in on a guy or two from minny, where weve also been recruiting for a century.
Were more a western state for sure than meatchicken too, so, cali, zona, utah etc is more adaptable to the eye at least.
Plus, we are south of meatchicken, winters are shorter etc.
So, above is a small list of excuses for not getting recruits,or,so called advantages to get them.
To me, it comes down to the coaches.

Now the Polar Bear is in... are we still supposed to be wringing our hands? 3 commits in 2 weeks, 2 of them big time trench targets.

I just need to know so that I know how to act moving forward...
Dont expect to see the negative posters in any of the positive threads like the nash one, either.

Somebody start another thread, maybe we can double our class again in the next two weeks.

I'd say right now we have the qb we wanted, our top WR target, our top OL target, and one of our top 2 DT targets. Let's see what we can get at LB and the secondary.

I liked to have 12 by at least fall camp..Were still down in numbers compared to over half the country, not that I’m concerned just a numbers fact..
