Smart move or not

Well I will assume he has gotten some sort of evaluation, but I can't say I would disagree with that decision. For some, four years is enough and if you have the opportunity to reach for the ring, I say go for it.

I was skeptical that Nelson would ever become a good player here but he improved each year under below average coaching, don’t know where he fits in nfl. Too slow for LB, and he lacks flexibility/bend to be a 4-3 DE. Good solid football player that can maybe find his way on to the field on special teams and reserve roles.

I'd still love to see him try fullback...

Nobody on this board has any clue how good our guys actually are...we were terrible on defense the last 6 years, including the "close" year, yet we have multiple guys from those teams playing meaningful minutes as rookies in the NFL. I think we are going to find out we actually had some talented guys on historically bad teams with historically chaotic coaching, which will just salt the wound even more from golden boy. The irony is Nelson is Frost guy through and through and probably should see if he can maximize his talent with a new staff, don't blame anybody for leaving when it is pretty clear we will lose for a couple years before things turn around.

He lacks the agility of a top level 4-3 end but he’s got the physicality to set the edge. I could see him getting drafted late and making a team.

Should have stayed, and I think he would have improved a lot under Rhule.

I'm not sure another year would improve his draft position, so it may be best to leave now and avoid serious injury.
What draft position? He can easily not get drafted at all - he wouldn’t be risking anything by coming back. Late round picks don’t make much and some don’t even make the team. He would be paid more in NIL at Nebraska next year then he will make playing football professionally.

so declaring for the draft doesn't mean anything any more?
so basicly everyone will declare

Good point, I don’t know why someone doesn’t do an in depth analysis of this teams NIL to me one service says our Nil is top five and another says we are’t in The top twenty. We let Palmer get away with zero Nil money.

Please define meaningful minutes for the rookies. Outside of Cam Taylor-Britt, who was a second round pick, no one else is doing anything other than playing special teams or getting in to give a guy a play or 2 off. Domann and Stille have less tackles combined than I have fingers, that isn't meaningful minutes.

Nothing against those guys, but there is no need to exaggerate their contributions as a way to defend Nelson's decision to go into the draft.
