SIAP: Scout say O'Brien Deserves Elite 11

Good call 4.6.3, I read this yesterday but didn't take the time to post. Makes me wonder if I'm only looking for things to disagree with... Food for thought for me.

To the post, this makes me feel quite good about recruiting and identifying talent where the coaches are concerned...

I think he should be in over that KJ Costello for sure. Costello was at the camp where O'Brien won the MVP. Elite 11 camp has lost my respect with recruits like Harrison Beck making it.

Back in the mid 2000's I was big into the recruiting games and ratings, but I see now more than ever. They don't matter that much in the long run.

Harrison Beck and Johnny Stanton made the Elite 11 camp. What does that say? Just produce on the field when you get here

Disagreement usually makes for a longer discussion. Doesn't take much time to say, "Yep." You won't see many 3 pages threads of everyone playing nice.

I'm thrilled with the QBs in the class. I'm not too concerned on star rankings on QBs. We have a coaching staff that has proven they know how to develop QBs and have a good system. If you look at past rankings, most of the 4 and 5 star QBs end up being busts. Most high star QBs are prima donnas and don't have the work ethic to learn/train or leadership traits to become great.

It's the other positions particularly on the defense that need stars.

yeah but that's just how unlucky we have been with QBs. Talent had nothing to do with Beck not developing; he had major character issues. And Stanton is just another example of Bo's staff being poor at talent recognition. 7 of the last 8 Heisman QBs have been in the Elite 11.

O'Brien is the 11th ranked pro-style qb of this class. My take on what I read about the Elite 11, he looked pretty good.

Attrition, whatever the cause, will remove some players from the program whether highly ranked or not. Rankings/ratings to me are a judge of high-school talent, even though they are touted as projections.

Given attrition and ranking what they are, I would rather take my "chances" with a player that looks pretty good coming out of high school.

Agree. While we've had some highly-touted QBs who have not panned out, you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Statistically, most players in general don't go on to be top players or make it to the NFL. Just like you won't win every hand where you get dealt pocket aces. But you play the percentages.

It was salient to me because this is the first time we've gotten to see a case where Riley, as NU's coach, has seemed to find a guy who was something of a hidden gem. We knew O'Brien was solid, a lot of people on the board liked him, but if he turns into an Elite 11 guy and Riley had him locked down first, that's impressive to me. It gives me reason to believe in his ability to identify emerging talent and/or guys they can coach up.
