SIAP - Congratulations to Zane Flores ...

I don't understand this one at all. A Nebraska kid, who lives 45 minutes from the stadium and is a legit D1 quarterback and Nebraska was crickets. For three years everyone knew this kid was special. I am so tired of hearing about how Nebraska wants to focus on the 500 mile radius. What a bunch of lip service that is.

Who ever established really the ‘500 mile radius’ besides media or message boards?
Mythical gauntlet thrown down by dirk or someone like that, I think.
I’d be happy with a 200-250 mile radii, but wtf do I know?!
regardless, it’s not miles.
It’s months.
and Scott has about 6-7 of those…

Yeah- it’s just not a good look for us to be caught holding our d*cks as the offers keep piling up, while we essentially ignored him for years with seemingly minimal effort.

I don't claim to know anything about this kid.

My point would be we have been struggling to get anyone to commit, much less someone with good stats close to home. We have taken much bigger chances.

At least he won't be going to Iowa, MN, WI, IL, or NW only to embarrass Frost for passing on him.

the defending state champ, best quarterback to come out of Nebraska since a Heisman Trophy winner, and we tell him to hit the bricks because our head coach, a highly regarded quarterback from Nebraska himself, outsourced the job of recruiting the most important position to somebody who's been in the state for 5 minutes.

as pissed as I've been about the last 4 years, this may be the worst L yet. it is flat out mind boggling. imagine the recruiting tool Flores would've been for us locally the last year+.

I don't buy that for a second. It's been clear for awhile (well before the offensive coaching changes) that Nebraska, for whatever reason, did not view Flores as a must get.

5.5 three star kid. If he were from anywhere but Nebraska and were offered I think many here would be having just as big of a meltdown.
I hope he does well and Im sure he will but him going elsewhere is not the death of the program here.

so what? new coaches need quarterbacks, too.

the quote makes no sense and has no point. perfect for local sports talk radio, I guess.
The point (or at least my point) is Frost isn’t gonna feel pressure to give Flores an offer out of fear of Flores making him look stupid. Because if he does make him look stupid, it means Frost is already fired by then anyways.

That means the only reason Frost would offer him is if he legitimately feels he’s the best QB option for the class. He clearly doesn’t.

How in the heck does Haarberg and Tores get a scholly offer but not Flores? Makes zero, zero, sense. When people say yeah, but you don't know what the coaches now, so shut up, don't listen to them.

Zane's commitment now has been published in an OWH article.

It’s a unique position that depends highly on what else is out there. Just like a basketball school can’t auto-offer a local kid. There simply aren’t enough roster spots to do that.

If they truly believe in their hearts that Watson is the better QB (not to mention better for their system), then I have no problem with it. Frost’s track record with his chosen QBs isn’t good but Whipple deserves respect, and he loves Watson.

Just adding perspective, he’s an 87 three star on 247 which is a solid rating.
His offer list is as good or better now than most Nebraska kids ever get, let alone QB.

I’ve said a few times that whether we offered or not is less of a big deal to me versus showing minimal (close to zero) interest in him at all. That carries bad optics of not caring about local talent, antithetical to public messaging about locking down borders, and also at a time when local kids have been snubbing us.

Make it clear we are interested in him, keep communication, let him know want to him to be a preferred walk-on or grayshirt perhaps, whatever it takes to make it not look like we’re asleep at the wheel when there’s a talented QB in our back yard during a time we had some terrible QB play (esp. 2020), and not much waiting in the wings to boost confidence in the future (before recent transfer additions).

Um, Watson is a 5.6 three star kid.

So we offered a three-star QB from 1500 miles away, one who is only 6 foot tall, instead of the one from 30 miles away who is 6'4 and already built like a college QB. Brilliant.
