I was on Bumble. I got a match, and we started texting. I think the second or third text was a picture of her in the bathtub with her best parts obscured by bubbles. Having been down this road before, I know what she wanted. But she changed her tune a bit and wanted to pretend to be more virtuous and traditional. I could have obliged her fantasy, told her what she wanted to hear, and advanced. But I didn’t think she was worth the effort so I let her slide.

What does this have to do with Mo? Nothing as far as I can tell. I just thought I would tell a touching story on Valentines Day.

The updated statement is as follows:

"On September 13, 2018, the UNL Police Department informed the Nebraska Athletic Department that the Nebraska Attorney General’s office was seeking to talk to Maurice Washington. UNLPD also provided contact information for Jamie Vaughn, Executive Associate Athletic Director-Compliance, to the Nebraska Attorney General’s office. UNLPD did not know the nature of the inquiry.

On September 13, Vaughn spoke with Ed Sexton in the Nebraska Attorney General’s office. He was told that the Nebraska Attorney General’s office was cooperating with a California agency and that Sexton wished to speak to Maurice Washington on their behalf. Sexton noted Maurice Washington was not in any trouble in Nebraska, and would not say if Washington was the subject of the inquiry of the California agency, a witness to a matter being investigated or anything related to the nature of why the California agency wished to speak with Washington. Vaughn stated he would look into the possibility of arranging for an interview. Vaughn had no further conversations with the Nebraska Attorney General’s office and Washington retained an attorney. Following department protocol, Vaughn informed Bob Burton, Deputy Athletic Director-Chief of Staff, and Athletic Director Bill Moos of the conversation with the Nebraska Attorney General’s office.

Given the request was coming from the Nebraska Attorney General’s office and the unknown nature of the inquiry, Football program staff introduced Maurice Washington to Jon Bruning, a former Nebraska Attorney General. Bruning had a long-standing friendship with Matt Davison, Associate Athletic Director-Football, and Head Coach Scott Frost preceding either’s employment at the University of Nebraska. Nebraska Football staff were clear to both Bruning and Washington that Washington had to be treated as a normal client and billed appropriately. Any additional questions related to the attorney-client relationship should be addressed to Bruning.

Coach Frost had subsequent communication with Bruning to determine whether the Football program needed to be concerned with the issue or take any action. Bruning did not share the nature of the inquiry due to attorney-client privilege, but noted it involved a text message from when Washington was in California and he doubted it would result in criminal charges.

No additional details on this issue were provided to anyone in the Nebraska Athletic department until an inquiry on Friday, February 8, 2019 when Michael Bott, a reporter for NBC Bay Area contacted the University noting, ‘We will be reporting soon that a University of Nebraska football player is facing felony child pornography charges, as well as misdemeanor charges related to California’s ‘revenge porn’ statute.’ Later on February 8, Bott identified the player as Maurice Washington. This was the first time any reference to the nature of these charges was known to University officials.

Maurice Washington was not enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in March of 2018, and did not enroll until the fall 2018 semester."

... to relax.
Or take his meds.

I bet you’re (dysfunctional vet) fine with those who say get rid of the bum, but if anyone says give him his day in court, or worse, says he shouldn’t be kicked off the team, you’re ready to fight them all.

Nice.

I think one would be fine calling him on the phone… Just don’t call him punk. That’s crossing the line.

In the court filings, the girl initiated contact with Washington by starting "What's up STUD?". Man. Then her step mom is mad because the nature of the interaction turned sexual? Really? Now I agree that Washington should NEVER have been stupid enough to have saved the video OR sent it to her but this whole interaction was initiated by the girl. IF the step mom wasn't snooping, NONE of this would have ever come up. And it shouldn't have come up. This was way worse for the girl than having seen that video again. The problem for Washington was a busy body step mom and a VERY aggressive female prosecutor in San Francisco.
Yes, let's place even the slimmest amount of blame at the feet of a "stupid" "busybody" parent who decided to monitor the text messages of a child (1) who has been (at one end of the possible circumstances) the victim of a sexual assault, video of which had been broadcast to her schoolmates; or (2) at the other end of the spectrum was so sexually active that she went at it with two guys at the age of 15. Yes, only a busybody parent would monitor the text messages under either circumstance.

I stayed out for 22 pages until truly the dumbest possible rationalization was posted. Yes, MW's problem was the mom and the prosecutor.

Should Mo be kicked off the team? I say no, momentum is very important to a team. Let's keep it.

Washington and this girl were involved in what should be a private exchange of text messages. The girl initiated the contact. The girl is also now at least 17 if not 18 years old by now. Good heavens, my daughter would kill me if I was snooping in on her phone or computer. Do you really think this girl would have pursued this other than to tell Washington to get lost IF the step mom hadn't gotten involved?
SECONDLY, you are ASSUMING that the video was of a sexual assault. The cops viewed the video originally and didn't pursue charges of rape. Supposedly from the video it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell if it was a rape. Now 2 years later after the step mom views the video she's claiming rape.

Mo will be suspended and given an opportunity to come back after successfully pleading his case and the charges being dropped, or reduced to a misdemeanor. Just in time for summer conditioning.

I will be at his court appearances with a sign that says "Make Mo Great Again" Take that back, in California they would find that as reasons to convict him

it's good to hear the NU administration didn't know anything about it. Im sure they are like the rest of us waiting for the law to untangled this twisted web of deceit. and get down to the facts of the matter.

Unfortunately there is so much inaccurate information out there. Some of it was because of erroneous information initially put out by the World Herald. They've had to correct some stories because of that. Heck even Greg Sharpe tonight led with his summary of the situation and HE had explained part of it incorrectly. He ALSO assumed that the video was of a a sexual assault and SO FAR that has not been proven nor can it be. That's in part why the kids in the video were never prosecuted. It's a he said, she said case and the step mother along with the female prosecutor are driving the case now. It's tough to know if the girl in fact was raped or if that's what she is saying after the fact because of the embarrassment.

Your diversionary strawmen cannot be serious.

This has nothing to do with whether this girl's stepmom should have been (like it's your or mine decision anyway) monitoring her daughter's text messages. Lots of parents do it with less of a social media history than what had occurred here when her daughter was a freshman. And frankly who cares what any one of any of us think about whether she should have been "snooping" as you said; she did and the facts are what they are as a result.

The rest of your post is utter nonsense. I specifically allowed one end of the spectrum to be that she was a willing participant, at age 15, of a social-media broadcasted sexual event. I guess under the circumstances I'd not be surprised that a parent might be interested in monitoring her electronic communications - maybe for 3 years even!! - but maybe you disagree.

Stop being obtuse. Deal with reality.

You need to deal with reality. She initiated contact by saying "what's up stud". It's in the reports according to the World Herald. What's that sound like to you? I'm the parent of 3 kids one of whom is a female college freshman. I KNOW first hand what goes on and how some kids talk to each other. I have heard what gets sent from kid to kid. This deal with Washington is IN FACT not unusual in the least. Not one bit. Unfortunately our whole society has become so crude that it's only going to get worse.

I haven’t seen the details of the messages, do you have a link?

Some of it was read on air on 590 on Severe's show today. I don't remember which segment but it was a female reporter from the World Herald who is doing the reporting. I don't subscribe to the World Herald but there's links posted all over the place to their stories. Conveniently many of the people cutting and pasting the quotes are not pasting the whole context of the messages.

I’ve read most of them and find a few details, but nothing specifically referencing her messages that started it.

Most of the people posting the quotes are conveniently leaving off her opening message. I'm just sick of people on the radio and message boards rushing in to condemn people without having the whole story and the context in which that story takes place. The World Herald should have the whole story up unless they took it down.

Frost's own words:

“Aside from GPA, when we’re recruiting kids, the next thing we’re going to look at is what kind of kid the person is,” Frost said. “And part of that is looking through every ounce of social media we can possibly look at. So if some kid tweeted something four years ago that’s bad, we’re going to know about it.

“And I’ll tell you this right now — if there’s anything negative about women, if there’s anything racial or about sexuality, if there’s anything about guns or anything like that, we’re just not going to recruit you, period. Piece of advice for you — what you put on social media, that’s your résumé to the world. That’s what you’re trying to tell the world you’re all about. That’s how you’re advertising yourself. Be smart with that stuff.”

Frost said prospects shouldn’t tweet anything their mom wouldn’t be OK with reading.

“We will quickly drop somebody if there’s something bad on there,” Frost reiterated about social media.

I've kids of the same age so blow it out your ass. I know how they can talk electronically. How you or I deal with that as parents has nothing to do with whose problem this is. The reality is that MW's text was read by a parent, so he's stuck in some deep shit. That's the reality.

Nonetheless, I've used this circumstance - where Washington seems to have impulsively, perhaps jealously done something really stupid, an expected possibility for teenagers - as a case study for my kids to see how rash decisions might have long term impact.

But if you think (and you've said so, verbatim) that Washington's problem was that a busybody mom was snooping, well then you cannot be helped. A snooping mom is not the problem; it's moreso moms and dads that don't bother to "snoop" because their kids might not like it that injures or "crudes up society", and until you went further tangential "society" wasn't part of our conversation anyway. I was granular on MW. And his problem ain't an attentive mom on the the other end of his texts.

I agree that many parents don't pay enough attention to what's going on in their children's lives. That said, the way she addressed him and the way he responded to her is not unusual for kids now. I am absolutely correct that none of this would have come to light if not for the step mother spying on her step daughter. At some point a 17-18 year old girl has to be trusted to deal with her own peer interactions without you trying to direct her life. At 17, IF you haven't exerted your parental influence, you're too late. Why was the step mom snooping? Is the girl naughty and so the step mom wants to make sure she's not appearing in any more videos? You don't know.

You're right. We don't know why she was "snooping" or "spying" - the judgmental descriptions you've offered. But the reality is that it makes no difference why - if mom was listening in because her daughter was (1) pure as the driven snow and mom wanted to keep her that way; (2) a teenager interested in any reasonable degree with consensual sex with her peers or (3) the victim of a sexual assault three years earlier, warranting hyper-emotional protectivity from the child's parents - none of that matters relative to MW's actions. So yes, I don't know, and frankly neither I nor the prosecutor cares because it's not relevant, much less exculpatory for MW. But I'm not the one trying to rationalize MW's actions here.
