Basketball Shields to Play in Orlando Summer League

Former Husker Shavon Shields will embark on his professional career beginning this weekend, as he will play in the 2016 Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League.

The 25-game, seven-day event will feature two teams from the Orlando Magic, along with the Charlotte Hornets, Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Competition runs from July 2-8, as each team will play five games in that span. Fans can watch the entire competition, as each game will be televised on NBA TV and online on ESPN3. Shields will play on the Orlando Magic’s Blue Team.

Shields, a 6-foot-7 forward from Olathe, Kan., was a four-year starter for the Huskers during his career, finishing fifth on NU’s career scoring list with 1,630 points, while placing in the top-10 in field goals made (562, eighth) and attempted (1236, sixth), free throws made (429, fourth) and attempted (565, fourth) and starts (112, second).

As a senior, Shields earned second-team All-Big Ten honors, averaging 16.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He finished the year fifth in the Big Ten in scoring and seventh in steals (1.3 spg) while ranking first or second on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists in 2015-16. He helped the Huskers to a pair of wins at the Big Ten Tournament, averaging 19.7 points 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game to help NU advance to the quarterfinals, including 20 points and nine rebounds in a win over Wisconsin. He totaled 10 games of at least 20 points, including a season-high 32 points on 11-of-19 shooting against No. 15 Purdue.

In addition to Shields, former Husker Terran Petteway is expected to play in the Las Vegas Summer League in mid-July. Details and updates will be posted in the coming days.
