Shanle today on 590 reminded me of a very important point.

Usually your middle linebacker or whatever you want to call him, is the QB of the defense. He's responsible for making the defensive calls and communicating them to the rest of the team. Now, who is our QB on defense and how much has he played? Was it Bando or MRI? How much has that loss of our "defensive QB" hurt us in our ability to make the right calls and communicate it to our DBs. Riley expressed disgust Monday after watching the film with guys that were clearly not doing what they were supposed to be doing. Was it inexperience or bad communication in part because of all the turmoil with injuries to our experienced linebackers esp. Bando and MRI? Most just assume that if you have a linebacker in the middle that all you are replacing is his individual ability. Its more than that. Imagine losing TA right now and what that would mean for our offense not only from a ability standpoint but leadership standpoint.

Such a good point, think people are totally underestimating the impact of being so thin and so injured at linebacker.

Well I might agree if they are not aligning properly and that is maybe why they haven't been more effective on the blitz. Nebraska has been pretty good against the run--so it seems that they are getting lined up correctly and doing a nice job of gap control.

As far as secondary calls--I really haven't seen that as a major problem. I haven't seen many all out blown coverages as much as I see one on one situations where the receiver just beats the defender. I doubt linebackers are doing much with communicating with the secondary...often the secondary is responsible for their own communication...could be different in Banker's scheme...but I would doubt it. Maybe HTO will know.

It doesn't matter who is playing right now to that puke Shanle. They all are just Bo's groceries...how can anything good come from that?

How very preacher of you.

He has to be the most obnoxious preacher in the Western hemisphere. I have never seen another man in that position carry himself in the manner he does online. Seriously befuddling.

Tom, for someone who jumps all over others who even crack a joke about Kenny Bell's former position coach and incorrectly assume they are ragging on Kenny, why is it ok to so vehemently rage on shanle? He is a former husker...

I don't get it. Either show respect to former players (all of them, which includes the opinions they hold of Nebraska football) or don't condemn others who might be critical of former players. You can't have it both ways.

I will be the first to say that Tom can be 'contrarian' but I would not go so far as to call him a troll....

I will call anybody out who hates on our players. (He wasn't giving analysis of technique, lack of execution, places for improvement.) Shanle can say all he wants about Bo...I'm fine with that. His comment was not directed at Bo but the guys who take the field every Saturday and play their butts off. When Shanle then speaks with derision about virtually all of our current players by calling them Bo's groceries I would think more people would speak up in their defense.

Give me a name. Who did shanle call out?

Coaches and commentators will do this ALL THE TIME. They will mention position groups, or defense didn't tackle well, or defense didn't trust the scheme (or other teammates to do their job). They will say the Oline is not very good. Entire teams get called out all the time. Since shanle referred to the team as Bo's groceries, is that the problem? What if he would have said Bo left talent gaps on the field due to his recruiting. Or Bo's recruits aren't what fits what Riley wants to do. Would that have been ok?

You act as if Shanle is deliberately attacking the players, when the reality is, his comment was a dig at Bo.

Your sense of disengenious outrage is comical Tom given the vitriole that you spewed at Harvey and Eichorst. So he called them groceries (meaning roster or personnel). Big deal. Go crawl back under your bridge troll. Shanle has earned the right to comment on our players and program. You? Not so much. Heaven knows he endured more than his fair share of criticism back when he played for the Huskers. He's been there.

LB or defensive QB, has to communicate with DBs. LB adjustments and shifts change how DBs have to cover. It's like saying Tommy only talks to receivers and backs, but not the line, "Switch to a run, switch to a run," and linemen stay in pass protection. See why it's important everyone on offense and defense communicate? If LBs switch blitz gaps or coverage, it directly impacts the DBs and their coverage.

Great interview with Jay Foreman on Sharp and Benning available at 1620 the zone podasts. Foreman breaks down what we've done, the communication issue and what mistakes he's seeing our linebackers and DBs make. Pretty educational and should be required listening for anybody posting about our DC or defense.

Is that akin to showing respect to ALL coaches as well???

Always like listening to Foreman. Thanks for the reminder.

You will have to ask Tulsa Tom that question. He's the one with the apparent double standard when it comes to former players. I guess you can defend some while others you can name call. I'm really not sure how that applies to the coaches current or former, but Tom should be able to clear it up for us.
