Head Coach Scott Frost was live on Sports Nightly radio on Thursday evening. Below will is a recap of what coach Frost had to say!
- Coach Frost said that the guys have competed and rallied well. He said this last loss felt different than some in the past. Felt like they could have or should have won it. Devastated they didn't win, but encouraged by progress and knows the progress will show on the scoreboard
- They need to have more big plays in offensive drives. Without it you have to play really clean. Said they made mistakes on many of those drives that should have led to points, two being turnovers, one was a missed block, and another was a change of scheme on the field.
- He's noticed the competition ramp up, and that is healthy and good. He said they're in a position where they have confidence in multiple guys at different positions. Wants guys to know that practice means something.
- Asked about getting rid of penalties and said that they have to get rid of fixable penalties. Felt like defense wasn't bad, only gave up like one penalty for five yards. Said too many dives start behind because of penalties.
- He implemented a rule where if anyone got a penalty this week, they immediately had to leave the practice field and run a lap around to field to try and eliminate those.
- In regards to the screen passes, he said it comes down to timing, and getting the offensive linemen to block a moving target in space. Said they've been close on a couple, and have hit on a couple in the past. Said they need to get the pass game going so they get guys rushing the passer.
- Marvin Scott has a bright future. Said he has kept coming on and is at full speed in practice, and in the games.
- It's very possible for Wan'dale to get touches out of the backfield. Said they have had lots of things designed for Wan'dale, but the ball just hasn't found him. Said they will do whatever it takes to get him the ball.
- Defenses are starting to do things to cover Wan'dale. Said he was dealing with a little bit of a foot sprain last week.
- The defense starts with effort. Said there are only about four plays in the last game on defense where guys weren't at the level they wanted to be. Said half of defense is attitude and hustle, and they are getting better.
- He's proud of the walk-on tradition at Nebraska. Said Luke Reimer is a great example of that, and they knew exactly what they had when he got to campus.
- Myles Farmer and Quinton Newsome are encouraging. The number of young guys that are stepping up is also encouraging. Said they have needed those guys to come along. Wishes they could've had a preseason and non-conference games to get things together, but is encouraged.
- He can't compliment the guys at QB enough. Pleased with the improvement he's seen. Said he knows that he's got two guys he can play.
- He's thought about playing the I formation at the goal line. He has done it in his last job inside the 3 and the 5. Said that takes out the QB run. He knows they aren't doing well enough with that right now.
- He thinks he has enough size at the tight end position. He feels like Vokolek is a big guy who can do anything they need him to do and is a dominant blocker. He said Austin Allen has continued to improve, and Jack Stoll has still been banged up.
- They need to throw it more efficiently. Said that Northwestern have a really good defense.
- Matt Farniok was the best O lineman on Saturday. Said the veterans are doing a great job of being leaders off the field.
- He imagines Penn State will wake up. They have had the turnover bug and that has hurt them. Said Maryland had just some big plays that hurt them. He said they need to get off to a good start against Penn State.
- The punt average wasn't good enough, and the coverage gave them a couple good returns, and that hurt them.
- McKenzie Milton could come help coach at Nebraska in the future.
- The quarterbacks need to make quicker decisions and getting the ball out at the right time.
- They are getting a lot of guys getting reps in practice. Lots of the young guys are on scout team. Said he takes pride in the tempo in practice and the way they get guys involved.
- He wants to keep game day as close to normal as possible. Testing makes that different. Said it will be comfortable for the guys to be back at home.
- He feels like they will be a really good team when they can line up and run the ball with the other team knowing what's coming and they still can get yards. As far as the I formation, he said they have a little work in it. They are building for the long haul and want to get the guys to master the basics.
- The WR room is a weird room right now. Said it has been a process to get that position room right. They are in the process of getting guys ready, and they have the talent but just need to refine and develop it.
- Friday they have a short but intense practice to the guys are in work mode, not recovery mode.
- It will be strange to go into an empty Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
