Saturday notebook: Huskers name four team captains for 2016

***Head coach Mike Riley announced Nebraska’s 2016 team captains following Saturday’s practice, as the final vote finally came a couple days.

Wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp, safety Nate Gerry, center Dylan Utter, and linebacker Josh Banderas will be the team’s full-time captains, and there will be a rotating weekly captain title dedicated in honor of Sam Foltz.

***Riley said he didn’t think Gerry’s recent suspension for the season opener should have done anything to affect his captain status, saying Gerry made a mistake and it doesn’t diminish all that he’s accomplished at Nebraska. Riley said the team “respects him a ton.”

***As for why fifth-year senior and fourth-year starting quarterback Tommy Armstrong wasn’t named a captain, Riley said he was a little surprised but noted that there were a lot of deserving players to choose from and that Armstrong did get a lot of votes from his teammates. “He’s a leader and everybody respects him,” Riley said.

Riley added that it wasn’t unprecedented for a starting quarterback to not be named a captain, citing guys like Tommie Frazier and Scott Frost as primary examples.

***Riley also announced that four true freshman would be playing right away this season. Cornerback Lamar Jackson, running back Tre Bryant, punter Caleb Lightbournand safety JoJo Domann all will play for sure in 2016, and there could be more added to that list depending on what happens this season.

Riley said there was another list of freshman on “alert” to play if need be, including JD Spielman, DiCaprio Bootle, Boe Wilson, Matt Farniok, and John Raridon. Those players will practice as if they’re going to play each week, but won’t see the field in games unless absolutely necessary in order to preserve their redshirts.

***Riley confirmed that senior walk-on Sam Hahn will be the starting left guard against Fresno State. Riley also said senior Corey Whitaker could make his way back into action next week, but he won’t be ready to play in the season opener.

***Saturday night’s practice was open to all University of Nebraska students, and the full Husker marching band was also in attendance. In all, there looked to around 3,500 students in the east stadium stands.

***After practice, rapper DJ Kool performed his hit single and newly adopted NU anthem “Let Me Clear My Throat”.

***Here are the players who sat out of Saturday’s practice with various injuries: linebacker Dedrick Young (groin), Gerry, wide receiver Stanley Morgan, safety Antonio Reed, wide receiver Alonzo Moore, offensive lineman Jalin Barnett, tight end Matt Snyder, and offensive lineman Corey Whitaker.

***Wide receiver Brandon Reilly, who is suspended for the season opener along with Gerry, did fully practice.

***In positive injury news, linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey was back in pads and practiced limited reps.

***Sophomore offensive lineman Jerald Foster, who is out for the season with a knee injury, watched from the sidelines on crutches with a big brace on his right knee.

***A number change to pass along: linebacker Mohamed Barry has switched from No. 18 to No. 7.
