Here are some quick notes to pass along from Nebraska’s full-pads practice on Saturday afternoon…

***Head coach Mike Riley said Nebraska scrimmaged for about 86 plays on Saturday, with the first-team offense and defense getting in about 25 or so plays. Riley said the new camp structure with no two-a-days actually provides more opportunity for scrimmages, giving NU three full scrimmage days as opposed to two.

***Riley said it was “a mixed bag” overall in the scrimmage, noting that the first-team defense had a number good plays on the day. Riley said the first-team offense also made some plays, but it wasn’t as consistent as he’d like.

***Riley added that there were a few impressive running plays from the offense, which he took as very encouraging signs of progress from the offensive line.

***Riley said receiver Bryan Reimers left practice after falling on his back while going up for a catch on Saturday. Riley said they don’t think it’s anything longterm.

***Riley said the staff made sure to give the first-team cornerbacks more scrimmage reps than any other defensive position group.

***Riley said receiver Ty Chaffin has replaced Kade Warner (broken hand) on the 105-man roster.

***One way Riley said Nebraska is trying to help reduce the soft-tissue injury problems its had in the past has been emphasizing post-practice treatment and stretching more than ever. He said they are breaking the team into three groups which rotate between stretching, ice tubs and elastic band work.

***Riley said new defensive analyst Gary Darnell “has been really good for me” as someone he talks to for advice and input after every practice. Riley said Darnell spends almost all of his time with the defensive coaches, and Riley never would have imagined having someone with Darnell’s credentials on staff in a non-coaching role.

***Riley noted that this fall has been a “seamless” and “smooth” as any fall he’s been a part of. He said the retention from the players has been excellent, and everyone just seems to know where to go and what to do.

***Asked to single out some guys who have impressed him through the first week of camp, Riley pointed to defensive end Ben Stille, linebacker Sedrick King, running back Jaylin Bradley, and receiver J.D. Spielman.
